RIP Claude Akins the famous Sheriff Lobo He needs to be put in the Peace Officer's Hall of Fame. I will try and arrange that. He was overall an honest sheriff who protected his citizens. I wish he was MY sheriff, particularly in Seattle Gangs would havwe been wiped out period. Bravo Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Bravo Sheriff Paul Babeau Bravo Sheriff Lobo for the peace he kept I'm gonna put him on walls of Seattle Police Officers Like Deputy Barney Fife and Sheriff Andy Taylor
I remember the bald cops' only reply to the blonde cops' achievements was "college boy",like that was the one difference between them that mattered haha.
I really think that Claude Akins's group of deputies wins hands down !!! they did some pretty stupid things!!! But I still loved watching the show just the same!!! I was always sitting on the edge of my seat wondering when a crash would happen next! thanks for showing me a blast from my past !!! I just saw a rerun of the rifleman with Claude playing a sherriff (under cover) he was truly a great actor!!! Tessa~
@KF6LIL In the 70s and 80s we did not have to put up with reality tv crap. There are 100s more channels on tv now, but only a handfull of good shows. Why? If it wasn't for sci fi shows there would be nothing to watch anymore.
I think you guys should know by now that TV Land does not air any one hour shows except at best westerns on their network and what's even worse, hardly air any old shows as it is!!
Lobo said "With deputies like these, who needs crooks?" One reviewer responded, "A better question: With oneliners like that, who needs SHERIFF LOBO?"
Wow Sheriff Lobo's men may be unable to catch BJ and the Bear but they can sure defy the laws of physics....(1:04) way to go 80's! Somebody call the Mythbusters....
Smokey and the Bandit influenced so many of these early 80's TV shows. I was thinking about BJ and The Bear yesterday and assumed that YouTube would have something - thanks for posting. And I agree with thimoneus - where are you at TV LAND???
There is a man the legends tell who stands for what is right. Like Wyatt Earp he never shirks or cowers from a fight. He is our Sheriff Lobo mighty Sheriff Lobo heart of gold Lobo Keep us strong He has no fear He's always here His morales stand alone. A man of means who guards our things as if they were his own. He walks the streets from early dawn and stands behind our laws. Both big and tall, he fends them all Who dares to fight his cause.
Wow, this takes me back! Remember the good old days of television when people weren't in so much of a hurry they would take the time to listen to a minute plus long theme song and actually read the credits at the end of the show? I guess all these young whipper snappers all suffer from that ADD thing!
Anybody remember when Perkins was driving the patrol and says something like this: "when an expert is driving a car it goes smoothie" and after that get a crash?
@betomessa Yes, in fact they WERE! Lobo and Perkins (I worked with a guy LONG ago with Zapata Gulf Marine that looked EXACTALLY like Perkins, even had tropy's of LOOK ALIKE contest winner!!) were the normal "Villians" for B.J. and the Bear!
@Hellogoodbye111ful Good luck with TVLand airing this. They too are into the reality based shows and only keep on airing shows 'I Love Lucy', Guns Smoke, etc,. again and again with reruns.
Hard to believe I loved this show, but did not like the character on the show it was spun off from. He was a mean s.o.b. on B.J. and the Bear, but he was great on his own show.
Another one of those shows from my childhood I loved. I think sheriff lobo also chased after BJ McKay and his good friend Bear and Lobo was a spinoff of that show.
I used to love this show when I was little when it came out on NBC back in the Fall of 1979. I just wish they'd release it on DVD so I can watch them complete & uncut like they were shown on their original air dates on NBC every Tuesday night.
Hard to belive Millis Watkins played a whimp, in Deputy Perkins. He played tough and heavy roles, as a character actor. In fact, he played the Sheriff in "The Incredible Hulk" episode "Death in the Family".
Claude Akins had a great presence on tv. After this show was cancelled he should have gotten another show. Jim Davis was a perfect Jock Ewing and they felt no one else could have fit in after he died. I wonder if they thought about Akins. He wouldve been great on Dallas. Too bad he didnt get another show!
This show needs to be put on DVD. What a fantastic theme song. Very underrated show & thankfully the Simpsons have spoofed it a few times to get attention towards it. Thanks for the post...
Claude Akins was a fine actor and funny as well, a long resume. I really liked Mills Watson. The story lines were bad but those two guys and the sexy girls kept me watching.
the above opening was used for the first season or first few seasons. in later season(s), they used an opening that showed scenes in atlanta, georgia, and i'm pretty sure that it used the theme tune "georgia", as sung by ray charles.
As good as they make them, how different were girls asses back then, now they have 10 or more pounds of lard and cellulite since they are "big beautiful women" these days. Don't you love the good old days when you could be a chauvinistic pig and be proud of it instead of being ashamed?
Gossage54--You are correct about this being spun-off from "BJ and the bear." I watched these religiously back in the '70's and early '80's. There were a few episodes where BJ crossed Sheriff Lobo. How cool was the TV back then?!

Thanks for sharing this clip. I saw Claude Akins in Atlanta, GA when I was a young man and he looked so rough I was scared of him but he was such a nice person.
I really hope they end up showing it on T.V. Land. It seems like they just show 90's sitcom marathons all day and night now. Those shows are too recent. There are so many great classics from the past they could dig up.
@thimoneus Then you need to swtich to Retro Television Network. It's on Digitial and cable. They show from the 50s to the 80s. Switch things around every 6 months to a year, depending on how long the original show lasted. Some of the longest running shows they are currently have on, Daniel Boone, Emergency!, Wagon Train (Saturday/Sunday), The Rifleman (Saturday/Sunday), Run for your Life (Saturday/Sunday), and for some reason Bachelor Father.
@GeekBoy03 Thanks. I'm really glad Retro is around to play those great old shows. I still think it really sucks that TV Land turned into such a weak network.
I met Mr. Atkins in kokomo IN., while at a hotel. We hung at there, since they had bands on the weekends. And Mr. Atkins was in town visiting his ailing mother. He was a very good guy to talk too. My sister was a nurse who was taking care of her. And when he entered her room, my sister said "you didn't tell your son was a famous actor...She told her she didn't want to brag..lol
Ok.But is some bitch on tv being dumped by her boyfriend on one of those "reallity"shows something that you would call "great tv"?Umm,...Nevermind.Bet you didn't complain about that ass at .25 though.
This show and BJ AND THE BEAR were good programs. They weren't high-brow programs that went over a person's heads...or were borderline preachy like a lot of the sit-com's of the time period. But yes, this show was quite good. It's of an acquired taste, though. I used to watch the show on Saturday afternoons. It ran back to back with BJ AND THE BEAR.
What do you consider "high brow" SEINFELD? FRASIER? the REAL entertainment is that it makes you dig a little deeper, and place the humor on a personal level. rather than just some, predictable, juvenile pie in the face idiocy.
that's just your opinion, though...it doesn't make it the doctrine that everyone follows. I am broad enough to appreciate all forms of clean comedy. the "juvenile, pie in the face idiocy" style as you described it and the silent movie slapstick style of Charlie Chaplin and the Keystone Kops as well as the satirical humor of Stan Freberg and the low-key styles of Jack Benny and Bob Newhart.
I don't go around saying "REAL entertainment" like you did because not everyone's taste is the same.
Perhaps I'm in the minority but I can easily be entertained with slapstick just as easily as I can be entertained with the witticisms of the late Steve Allen. I think The Three Stooges are still hilarious and at the same time I liked the comedies that I called preachy. There's no rule that says you have to only appreciate one style of comedy and bad-mouth the rest. My original comment was based on the obvious...this kind of comedy is broad and appeals to more people than the dig deeper kind.
A lot of the time when people say TV used to be better, in my opinion, I don't think they're completely talking about "quality" but variety. yes, in this day and age with satellite TV and the internet people can watch pretty much anything...but as far as the basic network programs are concerned, everything is all based on two programs: The Survivor clones and the American Idol clones. The "voting people off" concept being inserted into nearly every show...
So, when you have a lot of modern-day programs all built around two concepts there doesn't leave much room for variety on network TV and that, I believe, is why a lot of people complain. A lot of people also don't complain...advertisers obviously listen to those who aren't complaining about all the Survivor-type shows filling the air. Even the comedies aren't really funny...they're more or less variations of Friends. So, i'm with most of the people who don't like modern-day TV.
The funny thing is, though, depending on the age of the person, they'll base their opinions on their childhood or their early adult-hood. For example, someone in their 50's will most likely have a penchant for shows from the '60s and '70s and say they're "the best". People in their 30's more than likely praise 1980's programs since those are what they grew up watching. People who watch a lot of TV now probably believe that all these reality shows are the best things that ever aired on TV, etc.
I enjoyed your long discussion here. For a counterpoint, I grew up in the late 80s-90s and have not cared for much of anything on television. The few shows I have watched have been "The Simpsons", "King of the Hill", "Seinfield, "Frasier"... and that is about all the programming I've cared for that has been made while I have alive. I guess I should add that I liked "Tour of Duty", but I haven't seen that since it came out originally.
However, I watch a bit of Retro TV now, and I like it.
reminds of me of the Grand Rapids Mn Police there always crashin in to something lol

Hell I'd vote Lobo for sheriff
He's more honest than cops today, and Barney Fife as his deputy
Better than cops we got today save for Sheriiff Joe Arpaio, and Sheriiff Paul Babeau
We need honest cops, and Lobo, Arpaio and Babeau are a breed not to be beat
I would trust each of them with my life, shit you not.

OMG, this brings back childhood memories! Seem to remember BJ and the Bear having run-ins with Sheriff Lobo.
The first few seconds of this vid looks like the town setting of "In the Heat of the Night".

Was this really from 1980?!?
Man, I feel old.

WOW I had forgotten all about this one. Wasn't this a spin-off of BJ and the Bear?

The opening theme was often the highlight of the show, but loved Mighty Sheriff Lobo.
Anyone out there know if Claude Akins was part Cherokee?
HowardBealeJr 2 years ago 2
I think he was...I remember him mentioning he had some Native American heritage once on Entertainment Tonight years ago.

I remember the Lobo with a shark in it most. I never watched BJ much but I think I watched Lobo every week while it was on.

Sheriff Lobo Should Be On TV Land Someday!!!
LtGiant 2 years ago
I really hope they end up showing it on T.V. Land. It seems like they just show 90's sitcom marathons all day and night now. Those shows are too recent. There are so many great classics from the past they could dig up.
thimoneus 2 years ago 38
@thimoneus I agree completely--TV land should be for classic tv shows -- not the recent CRAP from the 90s
delidude1999 1 year ago
@thimoneus I think they're airing it on the Retro Television Network.
devares2006 1 year ago
@thimoneus I believe this comes on Retro TV if you can get this channel Sun evenings.

Ditto @thimoneus! They should at least release it on DVD, I loved this show!

And when he entered her room, my sister said "you didn't tell your son was a famous actor...She told her she didn't want to brag..lol

did you ever notice that every tv show in the 70s and 80s wrecked like 20 of that type of police car every episode
towtruck77 2 years ago
LOL, CHiPs was the worst offender there. Every episode started with AT LEAST a 20 car pile up!

The next time some old fuck tells me how much better TV used to be I'm going to show him this or send him to BJ's and the Bear
chax1971 2 years ago
This show and BJ AND THE BEAR were good programs. They weren't high-brow programs that went over a person's heads...or were borderline preachy like a lot of the sit-com's of the time period. But yes, this show was quite good. It's of an acquired taste, though. I used to watch the show on Saturday afternoons. It ran back to back with BJ AND THE BEAR.
ACcountryFan 2 years ago
What do you consider "high brow" SEINFELD? FRASIER? the REAL entertainment is that it makes you dig a little deeper, and place the humor on a personal level. rather than just some, predictable, juvenile pie in the face idiocy.
saletious 2 years ago
that's just your opinion, though...it doesn't make it the doctrine that everyone follows.
ACcountryFan 2 years ago
Perhaps I'm in the minority but I can easily be entertained with slapstick just as easily as I can be entertained with the witticisms of the late Steve Allen. I think The Three Stooges are still hilarious and at the same time I liked the comedies that I called preachy. There's no rule that says you have to only appreciate one style of comedy and bad-mouth the rest. My original comment was based on the obvious...this kind of comedy is broad and appeals to more people than the dig deeper kind.
ACcountryFan 2 years ago
A lot of the time when people say TV used to be better, in my opinion, I don't think they're completely talking about "quality" but variety. yes, in this day and age with satellite TV and the internet people can watch pretty much anything...but as far as the basic network programs are concerned, everything is all based on two programs: The Survivor clones and the American Idol clones. The "voting people off" concept being inserted into nearly every show...
ACcountryFan 2 years ago
So, when you have a lot of modern-day programs all built around two concepts there doesn't leave much room for variety on network TV and that, I believe, is why a lot of people complain. A lot of people also don't complain...advertisers obviously listen to those who aren't complaining about all the Survivor-type shows filling the air. Even the comedies aren't really funny...they're more or less variations of Friends. So, i'm with most of the people who don't like modern-day TV.
ACcountryFan 2 years ago
The funny thing is, though, depending on the age of the person, they'll base their opinions on their childhood or their early adult-hood. For example, someone in their 50's will most likely have a penchant for shows from the '60s and '70s and say they're "the best". People in their 30's more than likely praise 1980's programs since those are what they grew up watching. People who watch a lot of TV now probably believe that all these reality shows are the best things that ever aired on TV, etc.
ACcountryFan 2 years ago
you are exactly right, i think. i'm a child of the 70s andlove bj,lobo, threes company, happy days, etc.
lowell191 2 years ago
I enjoyed your long discussion here. For a counterpoint, I grew up in the late 80s-90s and have not cared for much of anything on television. The few shows I have watched have been "The Simpsons", "King of the Hill", "Seinfield, "Frasier"... and that is about all the programming I've cared for that has been made while I have alive. I guess I should add that I liked "Tour of Duty", but I haven't seen that since it came out originally.
However, I watch a bit of Retro TV now, and I like it.
