@jessef2502 My buddies and I will be going in September when the water level is lower....Its a yearly, epic fishing trip that we look forward to all year. See you on the trail. : )
@Sheety33 Thank you! I don't recall the names of the campgrounds along the river. I'll have to check my map. Our "in point" is the "Forks of the Kern" trailhead. You basically descend down the mountain from the parking lot, cross the little Kern and then you have endless campsites along the Big Kern. If you go in September when the water is low, you can literally stand in the middle of the river and fish...just be careful. Parts of the river will kill you even in September.
@BigEsBushcraft Potatoes would be a little much for us lol. I live in Southern California. The Kern River area is about 4.5 hours north of Los Angeles. Our back country is vast and rugged. This is my favorite destination in Southern California because the elevation isn't so high (4000 ft) that you can't have camp fires, the river is stunning, the backpacking is a 10, and the mountains are nothing short of breath taking.
Great video. I was at the forks once for a day trip in 2009. The hike back was exhausting all the way up that hill!! But like at 1:08 and a little before that spot you can look down and see the trout swimming around, big ones too. Would love to hike deeper and camp the night like you did.
@guerrillatactical You are right my friend, that trip out is totally exhausting, particularly if it is hot. Our practice now is to go in about 7 miles from the base of the mountain and fish along the river. When we break camp in the morning, we are up and out at first light. That we we avoid the noon day sun and the dead hot air that can kill you in the afternoon.
I truly love this place. Another thought is from the Jerkey Trail you can do a 30 mile loop onto the Kern and exit at the Forks
Looks like a great trip. I bet those beers were a treat. Im going out to the Golden Trout Wilderness next week. Hitting the trail via Black Rock Ranger Station and Ninemile creek to Jordan Hot Springs.
@davidsquall351 Enjoy my friend. This is the best time to go. My friend rolled into camp with a stuffed pack and then became the hero when he pulled out 20 beers still chilled by ice. Unbelievable sight. This is one of my favorite places to go because of the fishing. We all had a great time. Use panther martin lures. Yellow body with red spots, silver spoon.
@davidsquall351 I hope you make a video trip report. Maybe my buddies and I will study it and evaluate it for our next "put in" in the Kern River area. Good luck, be safe and enjoy!

Awesome video! Do you recommend the Hobo Campground area as a good place to do any fishing?
