Jeanne d'Arc (her actual capitalized name) was not burned for witchcraft but instead for heresy, Also i believe her actual quote was "If you love my God, follow me!!" other then these quaint little things that I only noticed because I have done extensive research on her for NHD I like this it seems like a good movie to try to find. God Bless
this movie made such a huge impression on me that I felt like even God himself was speaking to me. The power of this message was doubled because I've seen this movie for the first time in the day of John Paul the second's death. Seriously, I considered becoming a priest that day..
I liked this movie, but I think the way Joan is portrayed as a schizophrenic lunatic is a bit to much. The reason why she was accused of heresy by the Inquisition was part religious and part political. She was hailed as the saviour of France by the people and could pose a threat to the newly crowned King himself if left unchecked.
The religious controversy was ofcourse that she claimed to be able to speak for God, something that the Church could only view as the ranting of a heretic.
No matter what everyone thinks about Saint Joan the point is this, she gave her nation, her people hope when they have none and lead by example at the siege of Orleans. An icon is a powerful thing especially in wartime. Also she is just a peasant girl who is brave enough to lead men into battle that proves her determination and faith in something that most of us will not have.
erm I'm from the uk so yes I do have a sense of humour. But I dont rate that "only god knows" as a joke I rate that as a stupid remark. Plus I own this movie on dvd and I've watched it many times til I got bored so yes I do know where ur coming from. Plus wiki might be relative but it doesnt change the fact that it's full of shite....end of
You should read the transcripts of her trial. She was amazingly intelligent for a "peasant farm girl", many times leaving the 60+ senior bishops and prosecutors in stunned silence.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
nor was she sent by god as she solely claims when she wanted to have a word with the dauphine at chinon. illusions is pretty much apart of schizophrenia which leads to split personality. She may appear in the court of her trial to be normal but on the otherhand she has a demon inside that when pressured it will ventually come out.
In addition, the notion that the French threw their lot in with Joan because they were desperate is also unlikely. Though badly defeated, they still cared about their image.
Upon her arrival at Chinon, the royal counselor Jacques Gélu cautioned, "One should not lightly alter any policy because of a conversation with a girl, a peasant, so susceptible to illusions, and make oneself ridiculous in the sight of foreign nations."
Contrary to modern stereotypes about the Middle Ages, the court of Charles VII was shrewd and skeptical on the subject of mental health.
Not to mention the documentation of her trial shows her to be exceptionally alert, keen, and present in faculties, a record, by the way, compiled by her enemies.
In addition, diagnoses such as schizophrenia are slim in likelihood because any person with such a disorder could hardly gain any favor in the court of King Charles VII.
His own father, Charles VI, was popularly known as "Charles the Mad," and much of the political and military decline that France had suffered during his reign could be attributed to the power vacuum that his episodes of insanity had produced, and nobody mistook his insanity as a religious awakening.
The characteristics of Schizophrenia conflict with known facts about Joan's life. It is especially unlikely because her life-style and activities would surely have been impossible had such a serious disease been present.
I liked this movie a lot. I loved her passion. Actually, I saw the version with LeeLee Sobieski, also, and liked it, too. I realized there was something to be said for understatement, or maybe I'm just easy to please. Good video, by the way. Well done; adding this song was very affective and moving.
She was protrayed overly crazy and unstable in this movie, but the whole movie was as has been said, a view on whether she was inspired by god or by her own vengeance. So a innocent fragile leelee joan cant offer the view that it may be vengeance. Milla played the part brilliantly, and though its not historic, it makes alot more sense then many "historic" films. Which means it has alot more relevance. They portrayed her to be a little overly Nerotic, but ill never forget the Siege of la Tourelle
lol my dad said that also about jeanne being hyper. when i watched it, it made me wonder about her visions. but i still consider her a hero. your name is French, so i'll assume you're from France mon peut-etre/ nouveau copain :). the movie affected me greatly also
i haven't seen the one with leelee yet. but i saw this one and imo, it's great. the story mostly explained whether jeanne's visions were from God, or from herself out of revenge. have to see the one with leelee....

This seems to rule out many medical hypotheses.
