  • purple haze all around!

  • No rock-band to my knowledge so far has reached such a deep undestanding of Hendrix's language. It's just sound, no useless pseudocultural paraphernalia.

  • Hmmm... Yngwie Malmsteen= rockified classical. Kronos= classicalified rock.

  • You have to see my cover of this song :D

  • @codwix1992

Where did you last see it?

  • Sorry, but violin doesnt mix well with guitar music. Theyre great, but this isnt meant for classical style.

  • @AsianDomination911 agreed! We played this for our high school orchestra Pops Concert last year, we had more pop into it and had an electric guitar with it. Personally I think it sound amazing ^^'

  • I like it a lot. When I said geeks and string instruments someone asked what I meant. I'm old but not that old. It should be clear. There is nothing wrong with being a geek. I cannot play an instrument and anyone who can't shouldn't be so negative. I couldn't do this performance. There still geeks but they're also great performers. Don't get discouraged. I still think it's cool.

  • Amazing!

  • If I went to see a live performance, and there were people in the audience saying aloud some of the things said in comments here, I would leave in disgust and demand a refund. Guys, shut the fuck up and listen to the music.

  • veranstaltung der behinderten? :P?

  • This sounds like shit. The Quartet are fantastic, but calling this art is one step past the line of blind love. But that's what happens when you cover a shit musician.

  • @SuperSaiyanNaruto And yet the 4 of them pay respect for the "shit musician". How odd can this be?!

  • @Djanck000 I know! That fuck is dumb as a bag of hammers.... Sharp as a marble!

  • @SuperSaiyanNaruto , I have never heard a load of shit like the one you unloaded. You are a complete moron... A COMPLETE MORON! Look, I know you think you know what you are talking about. But the fact is, you don't. Since you DON'T know what the fuck you're talking about shut the fuck up, you idiotic asshole. SHUT THE FUCK UP! Fuckin' idiot. I hate you...idiot.

  • The melody makes absoluteley no sense when played on violin...

  • daaaaaaamn, dude they just need a drummer to make it crazy

  • Ugh...I don't like it. They're very talented but this song just wasn't meant for violin.

  • dont know if its day or night

  • Check out my cover zkdmusic.bandcamp.com . This adaptation is great with cello and violin , love it , rip Jimi

  • I played this for my concort…I now realize how bad we sucked

    Lol

  • God this is art.

  • they are a bunch of weirdo's though

  • @Turb1ne What string quartet isn't?

  • @Turb1ne Hendrix was one too, and we love him for it XD

  • @Turb1ne better weird, than normal

  • they are very good in what they are doing but not in what they want to copy

  • too slow. god bless JIMI HENDRIX

  • Saw them at The Kennedy Center. Loved every second!!

  • good song1! I love this music!!

  • I don't like the song, but OMG!!!!!!! That is SO COOL!! How do they do that without a) killing their instrument or b) sounding discusting!!! WOWOWOWOW!

  • the pluck version was better

  • @sootyferrari65 you have a link to it? I can't find it.

  • @italouruguayricano im afraid i have no idea where to find it cuz i have it on dvd

  • I like this MUCH MUCH better than their foxy lady. Now if only my violin would do that. D;

  • This is awesome. You guys are rude >_>

  • I hate anyone who butchers one of the greatest songs ever

  • @13skipowder how is this a butchering? Not all cover's suck and this one happens to be excellent

  • I love this song i have an arrangement of Purple haze on piano. Check it out!

  • que feo modo de arruinar un tema tan lindo... es rock no sonido de avispas...

  • Sounds like bird shit...

  • was privileged to experience them playing this live in the early nineties at the Winnipeg New Music Festival... blew my mind!

  • Worst imaginable cover...

  • @ivelosthewilltolive why do you post? why do you breath? nobody cares about your dumb opinion!!!!!

  • @Oliveirex1 says the guy who just responded

  • @tmdtheghost oh lil' girl ... be quiet, will ya?

  • @Oliveirex1 Oh sure madam, I will. Right after I drag my ballsack across your mother's forehead.

  • This is something

  • that was clever, i like it, just shows what jimi was actually thinking when he was picking away and how diminished that song actually is

  • you joking, he would have loved this. put the violins through a distorter and it would be perfect

  • This doesn't quite rock like the original - but it's a VERY intereting sound - I like the cello lines particularly (also the babe playing those lines..). But is that a young Jack Cassidy I see on violin? That would date this to around 1965...

  • no doubt anyone can appreciate what they are TRYING to do key word trying and i believe hendrix one of the most open minded people of all time would appreciate the effort too but in all honesty anyone who is a true hendrix fan knows that these guys just didnt hit the nail on the head with this one

they are a professional orchestra im not sure they rlly get the meaning behind the song which is what made it so amazing in the first place

  • @cfc124 Trust me. These guys understand the meaning behind the song and they probably feel and connect with it on a level higher than most casual musicians.

  • better than nigel kennedys version!

  • this is epic!!

  • does anyone know all the names of the instruments being used here?

  • It appears to be two violinists, a violist, and a cello player.

  • @KidDynamiteKing I think there's a violine, a viola, and a cello, if not a viola, then it's another violin, but i'm pretty sure one of them looks bigger by a tiny bit. And what's with classical musicians trying to play rock music? It doesn't work, classical works in rock scene but not vise versa. I mean can any of you really listen to this stuff for more than a couple songs? It gets draggy and quite boring. This sounds dead on classical instruments. Stick to Vivaldi, Bach and the likes please!

  • @KidDynamiteKing

This is a string quartet which always comprises two violins, one viola, and a violoncello (cello).

Kronos has a long reputation of performing new music (Terry Riley, Steve Reich, George Crumb) and arrangements of music outside the classical realm (Thelonious Monk, Jimi Hendrix).

  • great

  • who?

  • I wouldn't go so far as to call this 'shit', but I'm not a fan of this arrangement. I much prefer their cover of 'Foxey Lady' to this one.

  • I'll admit the startings off but it really picks up at around 0:28

    give them a chance...

  • Well I think it's pretty cool for a bunch of geeks and string instruments. I would have never thought it possible in a billion years. Cheers to the previous comment. Lol

  • @tinadee333 geeks and string instruments? what does that mean?

  • i agree. i mean, its cool and all, but these people look like they take much more acid than jimi himself

  • dude, these guys are professional

  • I love this, it sounds so much darker and different, but in a good way.

  • great! bravi!

  • when they play Hendrix songs they sometimes sounds like Apocalytica

  • @enjoyyourtime...actually apocalyptica sounds like kronos quartet.

  • It's amazing how beneath the wild clothes, hair, great guitar playing and lyrics, there was this guy who was only 23 and composed a melody that sophisticated and expressive.

  • grandioso!!!, todo lo que ellos hacen con la música contemporánea y esas cuerdas es GRANDE, Felicidades!

  • moron

  • Fucking awesome!!

    Kronos really kicks ass :D

  • In response to the comments people have made, I would say....

the reason this works is cause the players 'rock it'

when 'Light Classical' orchestra's try to do popular music, and pretty it up, that sucks balls big time,

and when popular musicians take classical music and pretty it up, that also sucks hard as well.

but this rendition is doing neither of those cardinal sins, it's coming from the same place as hendrix man.

    It rocks.

  • The solo should have been longer. Like his extended live performances.

  • This is great

  • AMAZING !!!!

  • very said for theme....

  • fantastico

  • ok, first this is the kronos quartet,, probably four of the finest string players in the history of the instrument, and in there click this was forbidden. might not be using scores,,just ears.

  • this is great

  • Wow great job. Where are they from?

  • For those people thinks Hendrix wouldn't enjoyed this version, just check out what Hendrix did to the Star Spangle Banner @ Woodstock.Same concept, take something that everyone else is playing that sounds alike and go do it the way you feel about it and then it'll come out differently. How can anyone say only guitarists are versitile[or more versitile]Too much main stream media and Hollywood, you'll be programmed to think this.you're wrong

  • @rkc010 I agree. I also kind of think he did the star spangle banner that way, because it's the star spangle banner and america is america. he was using a song that is for america, and showing us what he thinks of america. with out words.

  • These guys grew up listening to music like Hendrix when they were kids, they love and respect that music and if they want to do what they feel (you say copy) I say pay respect to, then what's the problem? I have NEVER listened to a top 10 radio show or album rock FM in my whole life. And in the 60's we never saw commercials for anybody on TV. NONE Dead Grape Cream Country Joe Hendrix John Cage Fairport Convention, Crimson, Soft Machine, Pentangle Family Sun Ra etc. Listening is

  • I never said Kronos Quartet were copycats.I'm not bashing them,I'm bashing the posts that they should leave it to the guitarist.Hendrix[original]version is the best and the next best is by Kronos I haven't any other version worth listening to.Its the guitarists who are trying to sound like Hendrix are the copycats who don't pay respect.Hendrix went beyond what everyone else was doing The same goes her Kronos showing respect by doing what they feel.

  • Popular music sucks.Screw major labels.Nowadays I can get 100 different albums from the same genre and it's the same album. Why would I want the 100 CD's of the same album.Popular Music has gone stale.I'm sticking to Experimental music.

  • check out Coroner dude their later albums are very experimental, compared to what they originally composed

  • What do you guys mean, leave it to the guitarists. All guitarists nowadays sound alike. They try to do it like Jimi.If you can do it like Jimi than they're copycats not a real musicianNo more innovation any more among guitarists, especially electric. Most guitarists these days are copycats. This is great.I've just had it with guitarist nowadays. Can't create something new.And screw rock,There hasn't been nothing great in the past 20-30 yrs.Experimental is the only thing that's different.

  • great!!!

  • This just takes the whole power and emotion out of Hendrix

  • lol tell me about it man, tell me about it. Yuppies people trying to play Hendrix... not working.

  • A few weeks ago my ears had the painful experience of an orchestra butchering Bill Haley's Rock Aound The Clock!

  • Damn I can only imagine how bad it must've been xD

  • You know, if people are so dumb that they cannot understand stuff like this, it would be best if they didn't post.

  • I'm not dumb, and I can understand this. I do appreciate orchestral music, but when it takes songs like these and tries to do them justice, it fails

  • Yeah, that's real mature. It's sad that people can't appreciate classical or instrumental music anymore. Now everything is produced and marketed as trends and fads, it's been turned into... almost a social thing rather then an art, and after a few years, when it's been milked of all it's value, it's all forgotten.

  • Hmm, well... an attempt by Kronos to do 'crossover' but it doesn'r really work does it? Nice try, wrong choice, try again.

  • one word to describe...

    SICKNASTYLICIOUS!

  • jimi would love this. dig whats different...

  • best way to kill jimmy hendrix you're so right

  • fine performance, i said fine because it is different (different can be good)

  • I like this song.

  • hendrix was all about revolutionising the way we see the electric guitar, expanding the possibilities of the instrument to the point of destruction, you guys did a brave tribute to a legend in a way that still expands other areas of music. keep it up.

  • i wonder how many sets of strings they go through in a week...

  • i woldn't put it quite like that but yes it was a bit sucky

  • if there is a way to kill jimi hendrix's songs, this is the ultimate way to do it

  • Are you kidding me? Hendrix would have loved this!

  • Besides once all you shits grow up you'll realize that most of the guitar music you listen to gets really boring. I think of the guitar more as a percussion instrument these days. HAHA.

  • everyone that is talking about leaving this to guitarists is an idiot . . . it's music the fact that they are playing his music from a classical perspective just proves that Jimi's music is THAT enduring. How many rockers besides the Beatles have classical musicians wanting to perform their work? (that was a rhetorical question if there are more that I'm unaware of I apologize but I don't think there are).

  • Great, insightful, comment! ~Peace~

  • definitely leave this song to the guitarists.. quitars are more versatile for a REASON. this sounded like shit. i couldnt continue on.

  • classical instruments should stay where they belong, in a concert band, leave these pithetic covers of rock songs at home. leave purple haze to the guitarists

  • jimi played the viola retard so stfu if u kno nothin bout him

  • obviously not, but what does that have to do with my opinion? whats yours? did you like this version of a great song? i didnt, but ive got respect for your opinion, so id really like to hear it, since you are most definately entitled to it, rather than blowing up at me for stating mine. please show me a link to a good biography on jimi so i can learn more about the great jimi hendrix.

    Thank you

  • i dont kno a link to it but ive read a bio on him go look in a library theyll be happy to help u and i thought that it was as good as they could translate it

  • danke shoen, Wie haben Sie gewusst, dass ich Deutsch gesprochen habe?

  • ich spreche klein deutsch

  • I liked this but i didnt like when they changed tempo, and it needs more bow scratching like at the end, otherwise it's amazing jimi would have loved it

  • What the fuck do you know what Jimi Hendrix would like and wouldnt? Lol shut the hell up please.

  • I know jimi would want people playing groovy music.

  • lol, I love this response so much that I am going to grant you a win.

I was wrong, after a snap and some deep thought I can only concur.

  • i think poop is an idiot.

  • and I think your mothers a whore :).

  • I dont know how anyone can say this is a bad cover i think it sounds fucking epic! These guys are fantastic. I think Jimi would have liked it!

  • strange and unearthly - a wonky masterpiece.

  • mouais...des fois c'est bien quand c'est transposé dans un autre style, des fois comme celle la c'est moins bien

  • MY EARS AWHAWUUGUGUGUHG -melts into the ground- murder by a murder of a legendary song

  • LOL, THATS SO TRUE

  • that the worst purple haze cover i have see of my whole live guitar / harp / violon / drum THAT THE WORSE EVER , PLZ STOP MAKING COVER OF HENDRIX WHEN U CANT PLAY THEM ., THX

  • fuckin murdered the song, sorry jimi

  • wtf?

  • Yeah. I always feel sick when I see videos and hear recordings of Jimi with those white bastard Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding.

  • this group should help us realise why Sex Pistols - that may not have had apparent musical quality, such as number of notes - are great after all, in historical style. awesome performance

  • Wow this guys are amazing!!!!! 5 out of 5

  • interesting..

  • Bien essayé, mais sa vaut pas une bonne vieille Stratocaster avec un bon gros son dégueulasse comme on les aime.

  • incredible!

  • maan id be head bangin to that!

  • Lol! It's funny!

  • haha ....grandi sti tipi quà

  • Yasssssssssssssssss!!! Nuevo is a great album to anyone who's interested in kronos

  • Love it !!

  • i have always loved this cover. it's absolutely brilliant! those dissonant chords! just brilliant!

  • I probably wouldn't have got it without the Cello, still rock on!

  • Maybe if they had violins that made guitar bass and drum sounds.

  • wht the hell?

  • i think a bit too slow, but really nice !

    wow!

  • Not necessarily stoned....but.....beautiful...

  • were playin this for orchastra...

  • lol teh nglsh wrdz luk btr n nglsh. dumaz.

  • my music teacher plays this every day in music class! it rocks so much awesomeness!

i did an essay on it, and i wrote about its epicness due to its hollow and heavy sounds!

    Tempo: Moderato

    Texture: Hollow

    Tone color: Heavy

    Beat: Duple

    this song is great
