Perry was very good at hiding the fact that his power was going. He never sang this live. Arnel, right now, would make Perry look foolish. Listen to Arnel live compared to Perry studio, patched together multiple takes, sung line be line.
Deluted Steve Perry fan, It is like your first love left you and could not find anyone to replace him/her because you do not know how to move on. Either you end up being in a small box living in the past without giving anyone a chance to love you as much as your first love did or end up harakiri.
Most of the people here who are still clinging to their Steve Perry are not adult enough to move on and hate changes. Arnel Pineda is the voice of Journey now (07-11) If I wanted to hear a soft version like girl singing "When you love a woman" then ofcourse I would listen to Steve Perry but when I want to listen to rockish like man singing "WYLAW", then I go for that guy A.Pineda.

Arnel is an awesome replacement for Journey. Some people feel he puts more feeling into the songs. Problem with that......Steve wrote the songs. If you happen to think as I do that Steve Perry's voice is far superior to Arnel Pineda's voice that does not mean you hate Arnel Pineda as a person. Arnel is very very good...but...his singing lacks a little something. Steve seems to put heart and passion into it. Arnel seems to be just copying, recreating the sound. Steve is the artist creating the masterpiece.
I can enjoy listening to Arnel, he IS very good. But I sure miss the master, Steve.

There is a good male vocalist, and there is a GREAT male vocalist. Steve Perry captures the emotional overtone of a song with multiple layers of meaning and hits the notes with powerful range and a subtetly of emotion. Journey is not Journey without Steve Perry.

They release their 1st Album "Revelation" with Arnel Pineda last yea.r (went platinum). Journey was a sinking ship before Arnel P. now they are afloat...yes FozzOzborne maybe barely but they are "AFLOAT"...with all due respect to Steve Perry..he is gone.

i'm a filipino and i like steve perry.. when it comes to a clearer voice, of course we're not americans and we speak and pronounce the words quite different unlike those filipinos that grows in the states.. yes arnel had a nice voice but he is not steve perry and we cannot compare him to steve..

Did you guys know that he could sing other songs by various bands like Queen, Little River Band, Sting (The Police), Survivor, Heart, The Beatles, Van Halen, Aerosmith, U2, Warrant, Deep Purple, and other bands along these genres. That's how wide-ranging his voice is. So be thankful that Neal Schon found him.
I think Arnel has an amazing voice and the only reason there are haters is because he has his own style of singing and older Journey fans are not used to that. But if it was Arnel Pineda who sang before Steve Perry, I bet they would also complain. Arnel has a great tenor voice and he delivers an added dimension to it.

Neal's not greedy....he just wants to enjoy his youth one more time. He's 55 and touring the world with great songs (even without Perry) beats any other retirement plan. Neal still plays guitar like a mother fucker, and I'm sure he will 'til the day he dies.

Steve didn't leave... he was not able to tour because of his hip and the band decided to go on without him. He didn't leave because he didn't feel like he was part of the band lol.
It's not fair to Arnel when you compare his live rendition to Steve's studio version. Steve never did this live. But compare it to the Journey - Live in Manila DVD version of this song and you'll hear Arnel's voice more clearly. See the video by BoratcoHD
I can't be the only one that notices Steve smith does much better drumming than deen on this song right? Deen almost kills many of smiths parts that i think add a lot to the song.
This is a great juxtaposition that shows the measure of quality difference between the two. The richness and character of Perry's voice and technique towers over Arnel...or anyone, really.
Unfair comparison janderson2000, Steve is singing the studio version which no doubt was cleaned of any gaffes, while Arnel is belting it out LIVE. Let's see Steve do it live then juxtapose the both together, then we can judge fairly....I doubt that SP could even oull it off live now...
I haven't heard Steve sing Mother, Father, so I've always associated with Deen Castronovo the drummer, and he does a great job of it...but I'll check out Steve's version...thanks. To be honest I never started really following "Journey's" journey back into the spotlight until Arnel came on board although I did listen to some of their music from the 80's. But there is just something about Arnel's voice that gets me. I think it's like Ross V said on Oprah, Goose Bumps surplus..no offence to SP.
Hey laurajames, No offense taken. It's all in what you like as an individual. I grew up on Journey with Steve Perry as lead. It's hard for a die hard fan to listen to anyone else sing those songs. Nothing against arnel personally. With me it never was. What get's to most fans is when people criticize original singers who made the band what it is. Steve Perry with the songs he created radiate from his heart and soul. Fans feel this passion, result: goose bumps,warmth,tears,and a need to be close.

Huh? 007elway007...what about "After All These Years?" That one is Arnel's "Faithfully" and no one can compare him to SP on it. he made it 'his' and it has become quite the favourite lately.... Also, I think quite a few of the new songs are lovely, ie "Turn Down the World Tonight" which really showcases his incredible voice range...

Huhmmm, I never bought Journey albums before Arnel became their frontman...not when their music was free for download on peer to peer sites. I could have downloaded the Revelation album as well as Live in Manila concerts, but I chose to go out and buy them...so case in point, people are still buying Journey music especially with Arnel as the front. Revelation has gone Platinum when last I heard about six months ago...it's probably quadrupled that by now...

They are both good in all honesty, I am a filipino but I already learned that AP exist is during the time that he was featured in the Phils. news. I am an SP "Foolish Heart" fan, It's one of my favorite song..Faithfully and Open Arms is a classic of Journey not just of SP. In comparison of who is really better? If I say AP is much better than SP its my opinion. It will be a never ending debate..but I know SP will never be replaced by AP in all honesty I agree with that...MAZorgJourneySPfan.

Whoever sings better? honestly it defends on our taste. Performers have their own style and they have their own personality, they have their own type of voice. In the case of AP and SP the reason why they are compared is because the other one (SP) is the original, and AP is trying to immitate the music of JOURNEY. I say it again AP is trying to live the JOURNEY tradition.

Arnel Pineda has an incredible voice and is a great talent. He is not the first person hired by the band to replace Steve Perry. Neal and the guys waited for SP, but they couldn't wait foever. I admit when I think of Journey, Steve Perry is the only lead singer for me. I do wish Arnel much success with the band, though. He's terrific!!!
I really think that every one is entitled to he or her opinion, so here is mine. I think that Arnel, has talent and most of all has guts.. not that Steve is a God or nothing like that. But, every time the band looked for a new lead singer.. never went for just any one, they were looking fot a Steve Perry's sound like guy.. and Arnel, knows the songs and gives all but not just Arnel, no one can measure up, simply because Perry's voice and the way he interpretates songs it's unique, unreplaceable.

Most of the people here who are still clinging to their Steve Perry are not adult enough to move on and hate changes. Arnel Pineda is the voice of Journey now (07-11) If I wanted to hear a soft version like girl singing "When you love a woman" then ofcourse I would listen to Steve Perry but when I want to listen to rockish like man singing "WYLAW", then I go for that guy A.Pineda.

Arnel is an awesome replacement for Journey. Some people feel he puts more feeling into the songs. Problem with that......Steve wrote the songs. When Journey gets played on the radio...It's Steve that we hear....Not Arnel. When we hear...Whos Crying now... It's steve that sings it best. YOU CAN'T REPLACE STEVE WITH JUST A GREAT SINGER. Arnel is very very good...but...his singing lacks a little something. Steve seems to put heart and passion into it. Arnel seems to be just copying, recreating the sound. Steve is the artist creating the masterpiece.
I can enjoy listening to Arnel, he IS very good. But I sure miss the master, Steve.

There is a good male vocalist, and there is a GREAT male vocalist. Steve Perry captures the emotional overtone of a song with multiple layers of meaning and hits the notes with powerful range and a subtetly of emotion. Journey is not Journey without Steve Perry.

They release their 1st Album "Revelation" with Arnel Pineda last yea.r (went platinum). Journey was a sinking ship before Arnel P. now they are afloat...yes FozzOzborne maybe barely but they are "AFLOAT"...with all due respect to Steve Perry..he is gone.

Did you guys know that he could sing other songs by various bands like Queen, Little River Band, Sting (The Police), Survivor, Heart, The Beatles, Van Halen, Aerosmith, U2, Warrant, Deep Purple, and other bands along these genres. That's how wide-ranging his voice is. So be thankful that Neal Schon found him.

Neal's not greedy....he just wants to enjoy his youth one more time. He's 55 and touring the world with great songs (even without Perry) beats any other retirement plan. Neal still plays guitar like a mother fucker, and I'm sure he will 'til the day he dies.

Steve didn't leave... he was not able to tour because of his hip and the band decided to go on without him. He didn't leave because he didn't feel like he was part of the band lol.

I haven't heard Steve sing Mother, Father, so I've always associated with Deen Castronovo the drummer, and he does a great job of it...but I'll check out Steve's version...thanks. To be honest I never started really following "Journey's" journey back into the spotlight until Arnel came on board although I did listen to some of their music from the 80's. But there is just something about Arnel's voice that gets me. I think it's like Ross V said on Oprah, Goose Bumps surplus..no offence to SP.

Hey laurajames, No offense taken. It's all in what you like as an individual. I grew up on Journey with Steve Perry as lead. It's hard for a die hard fan to listen to anyone else sing those songs. Nothing against arnel personally. With me it never was. What get's to most fans is when people criticize original singers who made the band what it is. Steve Perry with the songs he created radiate from his heart and soul. Fans feel this passion, result: goose bumps,warmth,tears,and a need to be close.

Huhmmm, I never bought Journey albums before Arnel became their frontman...not when their music was free for download on peer to peer sites. I could have downloaded the Revelation album as well as Live in Manila concerts, but I chose to go out and buy them...so case in point, people are still buying Journey music especially with Arnel as the front. Revelation has gone Platinum when last I heard about six months ago...it's probably quadrupled that by now...

Both sides of each fans have their opinions. No one can deny that it really sucks for a new person to front a band. Fans will never stop comparing and the new singer will not be fully accepted...

Whoever sings better? honestly it defends on our taste. Performers have their own style and they have their own personality, they have their own type of voice. In the case of AP and SP the reason why they are compared is because the other one (SP) is the original, and AP is trying to immitate the music of JOURNEY. I say it again AP is trying to live the JOURNEY tradition.

Good point... I do agree with what you are saying... That's why a lot of fans get disgusted and upset. Why have someone imitate the old music. Just go on with the new music... Steve Perry did tell them Go ahead and move on but leave Journey alone". I agree... They could have moved on and left Journey alone... :)

people that say arnel is even in the same league as steve perry are either from the philipines or they need their head examined - steve wasn't discovered trying to sound like someone else - arnel was in a journey cover band and seems to still be in one- even if it is journey - he is still covering someone elses music - steve is and always will be the voicehell the drummer has to sing some of the vocals because arnel like the other clones can't handle the vocal stress it takes to sing like perry

It's hard to compare on this mix because Arnel is belting it out live without all of the mixing and perfecting that can be done on the studio version which obviously Steve doing.. Let's see Steve belt it out live...then we can compare fairly...for now, I'm going with Arnel as he had the true test here....A Live Performance...and he nailed it big time! Go Arnel!

Perry wins.... No disrespect on Arnel.. He has great talent.. but Me with Steve 4 over 30 yrs.. I am faithful to him. Been with Journey since the start.. and it will always be Steve Perry for me.. Like I said. No dissin' on Arnel.. His voice is beautiful too.. but Steve IS JOURNEY. I will probably get thumbs down on this but that's ok.. Listen to steve.. That voice.. it is just mesmorizing.

Arnel Pineda has an incredible voice and is a great talent. He is not the first person hired by the band to replace Steve Perry. Neal and the guys waited for SP, but they couldn't wait foever. I admit when I think of Journey, Steve Perry is the only lead singer for me. I do wish Arnel much success with the band, though. He's terrific!!!

I really think that every one is entitled to he or her opinion, so here is mine. I think that Arnel, has talent and most of all has guts.. not that Steve is a God or nothing like that. But, every time the band looked for a new lead singer.. never went for just any one, they were looking fot a Steve Perry's sound like guy.. and Arnel, knows the songs and gives all but not just Arnel, no one can measure up, simply because Perry's voice and the way he interpretates songs it's unique, unreplaceable.

to kidstud1- I am thanking you for taking the time to reply. Even as I love SP, for what he gave us all, in that time, I admit when one has talent. I am no hater of nobody, it's just the way that I am built. All my respect for all the SP and AP fans. Each of them were blessed to get to do what they love. I will be a SP fan for life, and even my kids wich are between 14 and 4 years, love his music and even know the lyrics, we being from Puerto Rico. But again kidstud1, thank you.
