  • It's actually a better method to take the fillets of normally like any other fish, remove the ribs and then angle the blade and remove the y-bones. This vid is pretty old, the next time I keep a pike ill have to do another video. This method is basic and does work quite well, but does waste a little meat.

  • Your method of pike filleting is exceptional. thank you for posting...

  • walleye is way better then pike and perch is better then them all by far

  • Awesome video. Thanks. Now I can eat the pike and not only the walleye!

  • would this work for catfish?

  • Excellent video. Very informative

  • Does this work with large pickerel as well?

  • @ROFLpwnedvideos We don't have pickerel in Alberta, so im not sure if they have the same bone structure.

  • @moosehunter30 considering pickerel is not only a species in itself but it is a common name for walleye. i am in Saskatchewan and i know for a fact there is walleye in Alberta.

  • @lac365 Yes there is walleye in Alberta. Pickerel is a common eastern name for walleye. The question in regards to if this works on large pickerel leads me to assume they are talking about an actual pickerel which is an esox like a pike. A chain pickerel and a pike may have similar bone structure, but since we don't have them in Alberta I am not sure.

  • @ROFLpwnedvideos Pickeral filets should be done completely different, more traditional than this. THIS is what we call a FIVE PIECE FILET, Pickeral should have only 2 pieces.

  • Like it, thanks... pop the guts out of the rest and into the stock pot while you enjoy the clean meat... great way for when your hands a freezin....

  • haha backstraps....can't wait for deer season

  • my dad really likes your vid. :]

he says this is waaaaaaaay easier than the way he learned.

  • Its pretty obvious theres more then one way to clean a pike, if you have a better method then good for you.

  • Not sure what some of these comments are all about. This is how it is done by many (including me) in Manitoba. If you want easy boneless pike this is a good way to go. If you want to maximize the meat, cut it into steaks and pick out the bones at the table.

  • this guy has never eaten the filets he cut off completly wrong so much waste wrong technique, i have been doing it for 13 year for a fishing camp how can he tell people to do it this way he is wrong

  • actually yes I have LOL

  • @matthewthelewis Moosehunter30 method is supreme. Wastes very little meat and is lightning quick. Not sure how much more meat you plan on getting off a pike.

Id rather see people keeping some smaller pike and utilizing them, this method is simple and quick.

  • @matthewthelewis really their is no wrong or no right one, next time think before you write anything budd.

  • sorta lose allotta meat fer notta

  • how do you skin them after you have cut the fillets off the fish

  • never saw it done this way before pretty interesting

  • i like the commentary

  • That is a hack way of doing a pike. I'm a fishing guide in NW Ontario and the 5 fillet pike technique is brutal. You can easily do it in 2 fillets with zero bones and no wasted fish.....don't teach people this crap.

  • Care to share your method?

  • I dont personally have a video of my method however there are videos on here that show the technique. Search for "boneless pike filleting" or "Pike fillet no y bones" something like that....the right way...in a few words will have the pike slabbed both sides from the head to the tail and will illustrate how to remove the ribs and the 'y' bones easily. The way on this video is NOT the best way....check it out....I also have some walleye techniques on my channel.

  • do u have a video about how to do it correctly then?

  • make me hungry its better then walleye when the bones are gone!

  • nah walleye r the best

  • Nice job, thanks for sharing. Five stars!

  • thanks

  • thats a big pike 4 filleting

  • I have cleaned many a pike having grown up in Saskatchewan - but I have never seen one fileted like that. That was beauty - I can't wait to try it.

  • cant you just fillet it like any other fish then take out the Y bones instead of wasting all the meat ?

  • my thaughts exactly, wasting to much meat

  • nice knife what kind is it?

  • i think its a rapala i have one just like it, it has a whale on the handle

they are ccheap like 15 bucks at canadian tire or bass pro

  • It's a Rapala knife. Birchwood handle. Full tang construction. Very nice leather sheath. Hand ground stainless blade. Made in Finland. Nice knife and inexpensive. Made like this for many years now.

  • Awesome Job

  • Thats great! Awesome method!

  • Nicely Done and quite informative. Thank you!

  • good video, very informative

  • burbot I take vice grips and skin them then take the back straps. They are a little fatty on the belly, so that part we leave.
