Hey, do you by chance have a video of how to unload the torsion bars? I've never removed torsion bars before and have a '97 F-150 that needs all new joints up front. Thanks.
@morgand25 Sorry it took so long to get back to you! You raise the front end of the vehicle and "shake it down" Check for movement left, right, up, and down. Some time you have to use a pry bar under the tire and prying while watching the ball joints for movement. If any play is noted the joint should be replaced. Most mechanics can tell if a front end part is "ripe" to be replaced although some use a dial indicator ball joint testing type tool.
@jeanl3405 Tapping on the end of the control arm while using the press does relieve the pressure and make the pressing easier on the wicked ones that's for sure. Have had to do that when I had weaker impacts, this one was turned down a bit and still went ok. Good old mechanic trick though for the stubborn ones!
@65jeepman Can be done that way if your out in the woods with a basic tool box but I generally don't do that as there are risks of doing damage to the customers car and the lower control arm. That one was a little bit tight and a guy would want to use a BFH...lol I find it best to use the proper tools (I have about $50,000 in hand and specialty tools, gotta put some wear on them.) Sorry it took so long to get back to you!
@Begbucks I usually use a little of the silver antiseize on some types but I kinda doubt that this one will ever wear out the lifetime Moogs that I put in before it dies.
@prozac4dave Thanks alot for the nice comment! Hope it all went good for you! Sorry it took so damn long to get back to you, our computers were down for quite some time and we are still trying to get back to everybody.
This was a great video Bob. I've never actually seen a ball joint before. If you keep doing these kinds of videos you will become very popular on Les Tubes.
Pretty much just a big c-clamp with fittings and adapters that cost bigger bucks! But you gotta have all the right tools in my business. Sure makes the job easier!
Never seen a heavy duty air wrench safe ball joint press like that, usually we just heat the joint up and slam them once with a sledge and they pop out like a bullet. I´d like a press like that it´s safer and definately won´t bend the a arm.
I have thought of different styles of hoists throughout the last 10 years I've been here but only have 8-9 foot ceiling in shop...which sucks. Would surely be nice though. I'm kinda in semi retirement so it's not as big of a deal anymore.
Thanks much fordproblemgt! I always call for authorization with estimate before I begin work. If someone tries to stiff me on paying they just plain don't get their vehicle back. If they write me a bad check they go to jail and get charged with fraud or defrauding a inkeeper/business. I most always get paid. I have kept 2 or 3 vehicles throughout the years though.
nice hope to see any how to videos it would be great how long ya been a mechanic my dad has 40+ years experience as a car mechanic so im following his steps but for the diesel industry heavy duty bus/truck diesel mechanic i like it
Hey Jovan, Thanks much, I'll try to do some more and a little more in depth.
I have been a professional mechanic for close to 30 years. Sure wish you the best of luck! It's a dirty job but you keep in shape! Diesel's are fun too!

@BobsAutoRepair Thanks for the info. I will check them out when it warms up outside. Right now I don't really want to jack up the Expy in the snow.

Wailing on the control arm with a hammer while using the press makes it alot easier!

Hi Ben, It's a Porter Cable 6 or 7 horse 60 gallon twin cylinder cast iron 220 volt 135 psi.
I used to have a bigger classic but it fried after about 6 years.
