The Soviets were asshole at that time, the USAF, which was recently young and indepedent, flown so many goods to the German people a lot. Yet after all these years, Germany resented us. Pathetic.

Those who ruled East Germany were anticommunists just like those in the west. Yes, the biggest anticommunists you could find in the ''Socialist'' Unity Party of Germany. Those Stalinist pigs were under the complete control of the Kremlin and its nomenklatura. Stalinism has nothing to do with Communism. But West Germany was not better. Right-wing German leader; Konrad Adenauer left many Nazi's in high ranking positions. He was authoritarian and jailed many anti-capitalist Germans.

Never forget, it were the americans who realized first that the post war germans are just ordinary people and not a nation of cold blooded mass murderers. They trusted us and helped us to get back on the track again like no one else. German people cheered to american troops as if they were rock stars. This picture of americans took part in the self conception of post war germany, and it gave us the strength to become one of most progressive countries in the world. Thank you, America!

(1) A Communist is an inhuman beast.

Wrong. According to entry in Wikipedia the UK delivered around 1/3 of all goods transported and started the whole thing off.

They finished it too. The US stopped flying goods in in May 1949 when the blockade was lifted, but the RAF continued until October 1949 (to make it clear to Stalin that they could and would keep going through another winter if necessary). Last sortie was on 6 October 1949 in a Handley Page Hastings flown by a Flt Lt Harper.

In World War II the U.S. defeated the Japanese virtually single handedly. the contribution of other allied forces was negligible. Every major battle for the Pacific was won by the U.S. Navy, Marines and Army Air Corp.

second, the berlin airlift was to help all of the civilians the Soviet Union was starving so they would turn communist

third, we won the korean war, the vietnam war wasn't a war but a military defensive action as it was never approved by congress, we won the gulf war and the current war in iraq isn't over yet

No, you didn't win the Korean war. You COULD have, if all restrictions applied to MacArthur was removed, but it wasn't. Hence the 38th Parallel. Vietnam was a direct result of American unwillingness to help Ho Chih Minh overthrow a foreign COLONIAL power (France). It was by no means defensive, and it sure as hell was a war to the G.I.s that died there.

There's no reason to justify turning millions of innocent lives into detainees of a system just because they were living there when the WWII ended and the Red Army was occupying the zone. Children that weren't even born in 1945 were already starving "thanks to the blockade" in 1948. You had to erect the wall in order to stop the fleeing ones, not many wanted to live under Stalin dictatorship. Years later, we had to wait for Gorbachov to know the truth.

Because if he had had shot them down; although he was allowed to, them being in HIS airspace until they were over Berlin, he would have been committing an act of war and so America- under pressure from their people and Congress- would have had to declare war on Russia, this would, like kurt says, have led to a World War III, with nuclear bombs being dropped all over the world- this was MAD Mutually Assured Destruction. enticott4--Air corridors had been negotiated already, so they were NOT in "his airspace" (even neglecting we're talking Germany, not the USSR). No such ground corridors had been negotiated, so that's why the ground could be cut off. As it was, though, the Communists tried to lure the planes out of the legal corridors by using faking navigational radio beacons, etc., so they could shoot down the unarmed planes. Great video, my dad flew the entire Airlift (Commonwealth - South African - joined RAF after the war & stayed in until 1968). Lovely to see the Dak IVs & a flash of the Hastings - a fantastic aircraft. What an incomparable achievement. And today the USAF and RAF are engaged in armed robbery in Iraq, thanks to appalling government in both countries. What a disgrace, and what an insult to the great pilots of the turbo-prop era.

Not that i condone or support the view that america is a great evil i do think that a sizable portion of the world thinks america is imperialistic. While germany was greatful for the lift and the aid they receved after the war, realize that america did cause a great deal of the destruction the aid went to fix. That being said the US did stop the communists for which credit is due. Most europe people im sure are happy for the contributions of the US but are unhappy about the US war in iraq
