Hi I am so obsessed with Rex tone specially the one that sounds at the "Where I come from" Dime´s solo in the Pantera live record "101 Proof". Does anyone have any clue about to achieve that sound? Does Rex use the MXR Blowtorch in all songs?
He doesn't say 5 strings are crap, he says, "that's crap", but I still don't get what he means by that. If he really thought they were crap, he wouldn't of used them in Pantera, plus, they weren't even necessary in Pantera. What do you guys think he means by that comment?
@DLI848 in the 4 VS 5 debate its about finding a neck that is comfortable for the size of your hand, 5 strings generally have much smaller string spacing (strings are closer together) so of course pick players like 4 strings
@DLI848 I think that when he says "I wanted to get away from 5 strings because that's crap", he means that 4 string basses are enough for him; maybe he just doesnt use the B string anymore and he doesn't really have a need for a 5 string bass. Feelwise, 4 strings are lighter and easier to play too because the neck is not so wide. That's just my interpretation of his comment.
my interpretation: yes 5 string its too deep if deeper as b...i know its trend to tune down and down and downer..but its NOT more brutal if u play deeper, its starts to sound like a JOKE then, for rocknroll a 4 string is enough..even the greatest solo-bassists play 4 string and specialized on a 4 string..in this band he plays there is mostly no need to play a 5 string..its just to deep for his taste..because its never a good tone deeper than the b..tone gets spongy..and rex hates spongy :)
Cool vid, I dont know why you need all that crap in the rack or all that power on stage. It all gets pumped through the front end and the preamps on the board. Basically the spector is all you need :) I do prefer the PJ set up over the double hum on a 4. more punch and a nice bite from the J. IMO.
Anyone know what that Ashdown pedal is? Still looking on their site and it's not listed. Must be a one-off or prototype. Also what's that top-right drive?
Anyone know what that Ashdown pedal is? Still looking on their site and it's not listed. Must be a one-off or prototype. Also what's that top-right drive?
Spector makes good shit; so does ESP. Schecter ain't too bad if you can put active EMGs in those basses. Those are really the brands of basses that are best for metal IMO.
I think you can use any bass for any genre, you just have to make it work for yourself. My dad used to use a BC rich for jazz and blues ad folk stuff, I use a warwick and fenders and a musicman to play rock and stuff
@ConorSomerz Yeah, I agree with you. I just like the way Spectors sound for metal because I am a huge EMG fan. EMG 35DC pickups are the hottest pickups I have ever played.
I think he said that 5 strings are "crap" is because he wanted to simplify his setup so that he can play on 4 strings with ease and not worry about an extra string. Honestly, he was maybe just a bit harsh, but it wasn't bad at all.
Search for recents Phil Anselmo aditions on the youtube and you will find an interview in some college, very cool by the way, and he says that Rex is sick 'cause of alchool adition, but he's recovering very good!
yes with the right strings and the right adjustment u can also tune down more than 4 halfsteps down ..yes me the same,,i will check out blue steels too
rex rocker brown has best bass tone in metal..and i share the opinion with him that 5 string is crap .. i started bass playing because this bad-ass-bassman
it's weird seeing these guys (rex, vinnie, phil) doing their stuff wihout dimebag jumping around in the background or firing firecrackers at them. They seem more calm, more focused on seriousness. I wish dime was there to liven things up. The only video i've seen recently of them being themselves is the one of The Kat headbanging around backstage at Ozzfest 2006. And he just seemed so lonely jumping around by himself. Man, fuck this world.
no, I'm just saying it's weird seeing the guys that survived still trying to do their thing. Not just the down members, everyone. Like, what happened to the rest of the pantera crew? The sound god and guy sykes and all those dudes. Big val, and bobby tongs. What are they up to? I feel so bad for them.
dude,REX is like beast from his years in pantera.his bass parts are soo complicated and techinical.dude,ur getting old..haha. i want one of his spectors...BEAST!!!!
u can tune ur 4 string mostly to 4 halfsteps down, this is one halfstep above the 5 string;). .and if u tune ur 5 string down the deep notes will sound undefined ..its not possible to play very fast on a deep 5 string ..undefined;). .m9ost solobassist say this ..but today in heavy metal trend was to get deeper and deeper, but check it out if u want: have u ever heared a clearly defined good sounding tuned down 5 string??

What song does he say he uses the ESP Viper on?

@GuitarRock92 He didn't specify. He just said they have incredible low ends, which has been true of other ESP basses I've played (no Viper yet...).

@DLI848 becouse in Down, they don't use such low tunings, and 5th string is just not necessary anymore.

I tune a 4 string B-E-A-D and will never play a 5 string. Who actually uses the G-string when playing metal?
Unless you can actually USE all 5 strings, it's just a reason to be lazy and not set up your 4 string for a lower tuning.
Just my opinion/ranting.
