Well you can use SMG's and AR the default way, by using a non-soldier class and choose the assault rifle when you get to the collector ship; or just do what I do:

Soldiers can't use SMGs ever but a non Soldier class (all of which can use SMGs) can choose to start using assault rifles during a one time only upgrade on a mid game mission. You can choose to use AR's Shotguns or SR's. If you can already use one of them, then you can get a much more powerful weapon instead.

You need to be an Adept. It's a biotic move only they get.

You couldn't have. Unless you meant an enemy Vanguard (who the rules don't necesserily apply for). The only ally characters that can get that move (Singularity) are Adept Shepard, and Liara.

You either saw an Adept that could use shotguns, or they were using the Blackstorm heavy weapon which uses a similar attack though it's a bit different.

throw, pull, shockwave, and singularity can kill husk instantly if they don't have protection. incineration blast (mordin, level 4 increased area version) is good for breaking armor of multiple husk, followed up crowd controlling biotics for insta-kills

it's easy to use Biotic powers on the lower level difficulties, but when you have to shoot down an enemy's armor to use powers on them, biotics feel increasingly useless. If you've got the firepower to quickly take down someone's armor it's relatively easy to take down the rest of their health without biotics at all.

@Worldslargestipod You don't know what you're talking about. Biotics are pretty much the only effective way through Insane. Look up guides, watch videos, open your eyes. Everyone else who plays disagrees with you.

@TheFleeingPhoenix I got through insane on soldier class, I more or less tailored the ammunition types and weapons to the particular enemy i was going to fight in the mission, and used adrenaline rush headshots to deal the most possible damage.

If i took down their barriers a I'd order a biotic attack of some sort, but often times i found I could kill it faster by taking down the remaining HP with well placed headshots.

with the right equipment arrangement it doesn't even feel like insanity

@frightenedanconfused none, but if you have SMGs already, you can aquire assault rifle mastery at one point of the game (or sniper rifle, or shotgun).if you mastery for one of the 3 mentioned weapons already, you can also choose to "upgrade" that mastery to be able to use a more advanced weapon of that type
