So you would rather place a child into a home where they are abused, resented, and neglected, just because "oh, well at least the kid is surrounded by others of their KIND" REALLY? What is this ideology truly promoting?

There is more to humanity than skin color.

@LeeMIlby Providing a safe home for an adopted transracial child & promoting their specific cultural intelligence aren't mutually exclusive. Although I agree there is more to humanity than skin color, the truth is that in American society it is much more than that, with race presenting more of a politicized issue rather than a moral one. Beyond that, it would be the pink elephant in the room & detrimental to the child's self-image if their race would never be discussed.

@LeeMIlby Besides, it's easy to make statements when White is the racialized color of the socio-economic class in power. "Just get with the program" mentality denies cultural education, because if the adopted transracial child is not "passing" as white, then there would be flaws in the child's self-perception. Race isn't a simple moral issue in America, it never was. I'm sure you could agree it's a highly political subject, so it's not the critic's that are to blame just because they disagree.

I'm not saying that the child should ignore their biological cultural heritage and replace it with "white" culture at all. Don't put words in my mouth. We need to stop giving the politics attention and instead work on ways to transcend them by promoting more inclusive cultural morality. And i'm not saying that we "shouldn't discuss the child's race", either. WE SHOULD concentrate on our similarities rather than the differences.

Blacks can adopt their kids. They already have loads of absent fathers and broken homes and crime, I really don't care what happens to them.

@gaylolful no what I meant was, why do they torture themselves? You can see that even if they did, they would still be looked at as bad in the eyes of the black community. Well, if white people want to help adopt kids who have no hime but blacks people complain about it, then let those black people adopt those kids. Of course they have to deal with their majority broken families. More than 60% of black kids are born out of wedlock. And more than 50% are single mothers.

But then again...it's not as if black parents always read those books to their kids. They read regular books. If anything...reading those race books may confuse the child...who shouldn't even care much about race at such an early race. The child should just understand they're loved by another human being

I think living in a world where you look very much different from people surrounding you can bring it's problems. Not that it's the child or adoptive parents' faults.

Maybe the child might wonder "why don't I look like my parents" one day.

I don't think the books mention directly "[name of character] is a black person".

I think the point that Samuel's character was trying to make was that children should be able to sometimes look to someone who has similar physical traits.

@hppy4ever this is from Losing Isaiah with Jessica Lange & Halle Berry, it is VERY good and it is very underrated as well. I always wondered why Halle didn't get an Oscar nod for her performance in this film? Same for Jessica Lange. Samuel L. Jackson, Cuba Gooding Jr. and David Strathiarn are also in it, check it out, you won't be disappointed.

Even the bias direction and cinematography cannot in the least influence me to agree with the arguments of Sam Jackson in this snippet of the film. You know what bothers me about movies like this? They always assume the adoptive parents are white people with some kind of money. Do they ever consider people like me with transracial (bullcrap anyway) adoptive children? My husband and I are Puerto Ricans from the island and we adopted an African American boy that was older. We aint rich and we aint white. But they won't make a movie about us.

There is a great shortage of white babies for adoption. And there is a great surplus of black/hispanic/asian babies. Adoptive agencies/social workers will first try and place a baby in a good home of the same race, but if they cannot find one, a good home of a different is preferable to no home.

Is it maybe that minorities are racists? I think that neither is wrong, as long as you give a home to an orphan kid, whatever his race. Kam3oen has a good explanation.

At then end of this movie the mothers come to understand that they both are important to Isaiah. Transracial adoption can and does work, it just takes work.
