I'll take the cognac, leave the accoutrements to the others. I listen to this and realise how far we've come in my lifetime from civilised behaviour, conversation and the proper spoken English.
@polluxandcastor thanks for that trivia. I feel much better now, especially as I have lived in and out of Oxford for the last thirty years and didn´t know that.
Wow. Anthony Blanche is sure a real character. The bit when he downs all four brandies is great. This is a classic series; top quality 80's drama. Such excellent visual design, acting and cast. A great show from 1981.
Looks like Charles puts on Sebastian's mannerisms when confronted with dour disapproval. Nice little touch on Irons' part---flippancy is not really as effective when Charles does it, but it does show how sensitive he is.
Charles's flower has rather wilted in his lapel by 5:10. Anthony's company seems to have the same effect on Charles. He's not quite as sure of his choice of company when he's with Anthony as when he was talking to Jasper.
Jeremy Irons is marvellous in this series, going from undergraduate insecurity (under a pose of sophisticated bravado) to maturity and depth. And he does so much of it with facial expressions, body movements - small hints as to his character's interior state.
@LitCrit101 to me it seems jeremy just puts up with jasper's company because he is thre at college as well. jasper is so judgmental of the people that jeremy hangs around without even getting to know them himself! he thinks jeremy is friends with anthony but that isn't hte case he tolerates anthony because anthony happens to be around sebastian and thus jeremy wants to be around sebastian.
@LitCrit101 I thought that even with Anthony, Charles was comfortable with being with Sebastian. Its Anthony he doesn't like being with, and he did tell Jasper that he didn't like Anthony.
@LitCrit101 Anthony Blanche is one of two characters who are comfortable with who they are.The other is,of course,is Cordellia. The rest of the characters are tortured people.
@holmsiantype I would not count Anthony as comfortable with who he is. He's too theatrical as if he's always giving a performance. Someone who is always performing does not seem like someone comfortable with himself but rather like someone who is trying to keep people from knowing who he is. I would say that Charles is more truly comfortable with who he is even if who he is is a little tortured.
@bejjinks I call him comfortable because he knows who he is.His flamboyancy is his way of showing he wont back down and hide his alliegance to "the love that dare not speak its name".Charles,my favourite character,is very conflicted. For all of his return to heterosexuality ,deep within him is his love and desire for Sebastion which colours and informs his relationships.I point to his marriage- a wife and children he cannot love.Julia - a sad, doomed effort with a heterosexual Sebastian
Poetry and butt sex. That's what's Oxford is all about.

Anthony is "thown in mercury" is it? Can someone clarify what that means?
jg33brunner 1 year ago
@jg33brunner
Mercury is the name of a fountain at Christ Church in Oxford where Blanche was ducked by the other students for being effeminate :)

"I have Greek History and Morals on Monday".
An oblique reference to Anthony's "lifestyle choice", maybe?

What is it to be 'throw in mercury'?
thomasking55 1 year ago
@thomasking55 it's a fountain. . .the incident is only referred to in passing here in the film, but is more detailed in the novel

Wow, you can see how heavily Charles has been influenced by Sebastian. And for the better, taste-wise.

Posh people allways seem so gay. I think half the time they only reproduce because its expected of them.

Now Charles hangs Leon Bakst drawings of the costume design for the Ballet Russ. And one of them is of cource for the Nijinsky's Golden Slave.
Very nice detail for depicting his change of aesthtice taste!

Jasper has facial expressions and a tone of voice that make me think of Charles Winchester on MASH, especially when he sort of squints his eyes.
