I believe you have stated in several speeches (about 1,000) that drilling in America won't reduce the cost of gas at the pump...yet today, you went on tv (another speech) and asked every oil producing country to produce more in order to reduce the cost at the US pump....what is driving the cost of gas and food and clothing costs to skyrocket is Bernanke printing money....it makes the dollar worth(less)..if you want to reduce the cost of gas at the pump, STOP PRINTING MONEY!!

Seriously the USA is addicted to foreign oil for 2 reasons. 1) You use too much oil, and are not efficient in using it, EG by driving everywhere in oversize cars. 2) The USA produces less oil now then in 1970 and always will no matter how hard you try.

We buy stuff from China, China buys stuff from us and so do other countries: the world is too globalized to even consider that but we can sell more and buy less. In fact our export profits (fossil fuel notwithstanding) are some of the highest grossing in the world, the problem is that we spend way too much on foreign fuels. We spend more on foreign energy than anything.

How exactly do plan on replacing foreign oil in the near future? Solar is much to inefficient and wind cannot replace traditional energy production facilities. Its very easy to say that we must reduce our dependency on foreign oil, but how can we?

We have a massive trade deficit with China. They are on an unlevel playing field.

@Allante715 No it's not impossible, cutting the dependency on foreign energy (coal, oil etc.) 50% is very much achievable. What you must understand is we cannot rely on one source of energy, rather a combination of Solar, Wind, Hydrogen, Nuclear, Fossil Fuels, etc. What the pres. is proposing is we start cutting our reliance on fossil fuels which is running out fast (world supply of oil little over 10yrs at our rate of use) and start getting into the alternatives.

Sure, drop me a PM. It doesn`t sound right. I have heard anywhere from 20-50 years. In reality I don`t think anyone really knows when Oil will dry up. New sources are being discovered all the time as oil is a naturally occurring resource. Gives us time to diversify and let technology catch up.

@SinbliminalSinSation The oil supply in Alaska at the rate of petroleum consumption that the US holds will be adequate at best to supply the country for an additional 4 months at most, 7 if we ration. And skyrocketing Caribou populations are not exactly good news for the local plantlife, it will disrupt the local habitual food chain, further becoming an huge regional environmental risk.

No, but both of these people are arguing about what the best thing to do regarding the situation is, and unless that is their specialty, the gov. needs to have independent research done to find out which method is more likely to be cost effective, better for the environment, and to encourage positive relations with the countries neighbors.

I agree, but both Obama and McCain have consulted "oil experts." However, Obama is reportedly speaking to government experts and academics. McCain admittedly is speaking to the oil companies doing the drilling. Given the two, I'll trust the advice of those experts who don't have an interest in increased domestic drilling.

If either Obama or McCain had legitimate independent research done that factored all the variables in, they would have a solution, and not a debate. Obama probably spoke to some smart people about it, but I doubt they did the research required.

What? The government experts to whom I was referring was the DOE, whose job it is to commission the very studies to which you're referring. In a Republican administration, the DOE would even be pressured to reach conclusions that support McCain's plan, but they did not. Campaigns can't fund their own research on every issue. They have to rely on experts. The more reliabel experts don't make money if we follow their advice. The research is done. The debate is just politics.
