"Whenever the early Christians entered a town, the people in power became disturbed and immediately sought to convict the Christians for being "disturbers of the peace" and "outside agitators."' - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Letter from a Birmingham Jail, April 16, 1963. Mingus Lives!
When I was just becoming a teenager, I discovered this music, and it has been my greatest influence ( believe it or not). Maybe that's why I don't listen much to rock....if you could actually say that I "loved" a musician, it was Mingus. I cried when he died.
@schnefsky Hey schnefsky! Mingus, Dolphy and Richmond, certainly the 2nd best musical trio the world has ever seen. I didn't cry when he died, but some the accordian music I've had to watch lately does bring tears to my eyes
Playing with Dolphy must have been a terrifying experience. . . What an absolutely fearless soloist. His reckless abandon while improvising is absolutely frightening.
Johnny Coles collapsed on stage the night of the date THE GREAT CONCERT OF CHARLES MINGUS was recorded and had to have surgery. The concert went on without him.
@Zappatero Johnny had to be hospitalized for a perforated ulcer -= had to leave mid-show and missed some datesfrom this [European] tour. Eric and Clifford had to adjust some of their parts - everything had been arranged for 3 horns. That makes this all the more amazing. There was a 3 record set called "The Great Concert Of Charles Mingus" with this band [from this tour] - some tracks had Johnny Coles, others didn't
This is my favorite of Mingus' compositions...this goes on for another 10 or 15 minutes, any chance of getting that up here as well? Thanks so much for the upload nonetheless.

Wow, Mingus looks so young & vital there; I saw him at Scott's in 70, & he'd aged enormously by then.

@milkhousen Yeah, that nod was awesome. A cool non-verbal but very clear statement of "go ahead man, do your thang; it 's your turn now."
