  • HEY YOU TUBE IF U LIKE THIS VIDEO MAKE SURE TO CHECK OUT MY RUSTO PAINT JOB WITH HVLP GUN I GO IN DETAIL ON HOW I FINISHED MY PAINT JON ITS BEEN 5 MONTHS AND STILL HOLDS UP PERFECT!

  • what sparyer did you use, and do you know where to get one like it.

  • @TheSixgunsam I used a Husky HDS790 bought from Home Depot

  • Richpin... Would you advise mixing a hardener with the paint/mineral spirits mixture? I am going to spray my '96 Mustang GT in mid March & I need answers, lol. Also, how many coats did you spray, was there any wet sanding done in between coats & did you wet sand after the final coat? How long did the blue take to dry? I'll be spraying black & was thinking of using close to a 50/50 mix & maybe a lil hardener, but not sure how much to mix in? Thanks, Frank

  • @83oldspro The idea behind this job was to be low buck so we didn't even think of hardener wet sanding or clear. We sprayed three coats paper was off in 3-4 hours and it was dry to the touch the next day.

  • Now that you did it would you consider going 1:1 ratio of paint and spirits next time?

  • @Ultimatemxcn A little bit more thinner might make it flow easier.

  • sweet

  • what type of primer did you use?

  • @sexy87cutlass It was a Nason primer surfacer.

  • Had you considered adding a catalyst/hardening agent to your next oil based spray job? I use one when I spray heavy equipment. The manufacturer says that it dries faster and harder and lasts longer. Plus since it's not sanded after curing it is supposed to make the finished product shinier -- not that it makes a huge difference on a bulldozer or anything. Great vid!

  • but after all the paint job is great,by far the best oil-based paint job I seen on you tube so far keep up the great work richpin love your videos.

  • what size tip did you use on your hvlp gun?

  • @TheBucksatan I am using a 1.4 a little larger would be better.

  • Nice work doing the painting, I am painting my 5th wheel RV which I will post later that I am doing with a foam roller, I think you should have went with another color or add some accents or flames on it, there's a trainer on You tube on how simple it is to do flames, overall nice job also by it being oil based it is less subject to cracked due to the oil in the paint mixed in with the enamel

  • can you add a flex agent for the bumpers? not sure if this stuff will crack/break off on impact. also, i am assuming there is no clearcoat... does rustoleum have any uv properties?

  • @fabulousprofound It has been over a year still looks great. For a low budget job you couldn't ask for anything more.

  • well rich your not alone when it come to painting stuff with rustoleum i painted a low bed trailer with rustoleum it was not my idea they supplied the paint i couldn't believe how good it came out high gloss and just flowed out nice they had rustoleum thiner and i think that was 2 to 1. i live in cal. all the body shops have to use water borne paint. i'd rather shoot rustoleum than water borne lol the paint on the low bed is holding up just fine

  • @jimba2000 I was surprised myself.

  • sounds like everybody loves raymond

  • i have a question do you think that since you can paint a car with a roller or hvlp gun what about an electric compressorless gun like a wagner?

  • @wassupbroification Never tried a wagner.

  • can you tell me all the stuff i need to make to make my paint job come out like that

  • @traphousealln1 Paint and thinner like i show in the video is about it.

  • @richpin06a i saw a car that was done with a wagner on a message board awhile back... lots of orange peel. owner had to do a lot of sanding to flatten it down.

  • I used the foam rubber roller.A big mistake.I tried my best many times over.Watched all kinds of videos,Did it by the book.Waste of time and money.I used the same color as you.I have a spray gun that came with my compressor and left over paint. It couldn't hurt

  • @wgsuperman Foam rubber roller paint job.....got any pictures.

  • OK so far I almost understand until this point about mixing thinner with paint.I think you said 1 quart of paint with 16 oz of thinner .

  • @kiro2miko1 Yes that is correct.

  • @richpin06a Ok I see here you are using odorless mineral spirits base on oil base not the regular thinner ok thinner that I have isn't base on oil base?

  • Nice paint job well whats the number on that color gloss sail blue at?

  • @kiro2miko1 # 7724

  • 2pots paint to 1 pot thinna sounds about right to paint a caa

  • Someone in my family had a bunch of sheet metal panels that were going to be used, but they had rust spots and writing on them. One side was a color and the other was off white. They asked me if i could paint it white with this same process but i had to have the paint match the off white. I ended up using Lowes industrial oil based exterior paints mixed to match. It turned out kinda like the car. They were very happy with the results.

  • ya know from a gun finish its pretty damn good

  • looks like a smurf car lol nice job tho

  • how much mineral spirits to rustoleum? when i shoot it out of my devilbiss finishline it is too thick out of the can, around 10% spirits is a bit too thick, and it seems that anything thinner than that runs like a mofo even if i only shoot on a little bit

  • How do i prep my car with severe paint chips and peels ?? thanks! check my video response to see my cars paint condition.

    Thanks!

  • @coi10 I use a DA sander.

  • Whats next? Painting with a roller? HA HA HA HA HA, are we in Hillbilly country, HA HA HA HA HA

  • @MrTimberone you late as hell. its been done and they look good....HATER!

  • What the guy does NOT tell you is that the paint is soft and will always be soft. Why buy a gallon of Rustoleum for 30bucks, and mineral spirits and all the other crap needed to paint this car , about $65 total when you can get REAL car paint and all you need to do it right for about $80???? The car paint will get hard because you put HARDNER in with the paint.

You get a better gloss, less dirt as it drys dust free in about 15 minutes as this Rustoleum paint takes days and NEVER gets hard.

  • Hello again !

Worked verry well with your video and the settings on the compressor you recommended.

It came out very well after the 2nd coat, but i had a lot of orange peel.

Today I sanded it with the 1000´ sanding paper and I was very sad that the shine even did not come back after polishing it... have you sanded it afterwards ? no heh ? I will now remove the polish from the part where i tested it and will spray over the car agin.

  • @Freizeitschranzer Being an old car we were not going to sand and buff it.

  • What are the specs of your Compressor, to spray the paint?

I mean what Size is the Tank, how much bar/psi do you use?

Sorry i'm from Europe. We have Liter, bar,.. ;)

  • @Freizeitschranzer It is a 2hp twin cylinder 20 gal tank. Right now i am using a HVLP gun with 40 psi at the regulator.

  • @richpin06a thank you very much :)

gonna buy one with 13 gal, should be ok too ? it can do the psi and recharges 64 gal per Minute.

Here in europe we dont know this "mineral spirits" is it something like "white spirit" or "ethyl alcohol" ?

    thanks for the help!

  • Richpin,

If it hasnt been written here already (u have alot of comments on this one lol) you should do another IN DETAIL car painting vid. You'd get alot of hits. You make it sound simple yet you really did a good job there!

  • how did you prep your car for the paint? thanks for the great video

  • @TheKLFORD Filled and primed the areas that needed it then sanded with 320 then use a chemical cleaner and shot the paint.

  • Rustoleum is an awesome paint. Besides the low price, it really is a high quality and durable enamel. Its what I've used to paint my buses. After 4 years, the bus is still shiny. Preparation is key to any paint job.

  • What primer did u use?

  • @andyroodaman88 I used a mason primer surfacer

  • whats the name of the exact color i like it

  • @yaboyprime614 sail blue 7724

  • @richpin06a you know how much it ran you and was is a gallon or pint thanks

  • @yaboyprime614 we used 1 qt and it was $8.00

  • @richpin06a how much did all the material cost as well thanks

  • @yaboyprime614 $20.-$30.

  • Amazing...just amazing. But isn't rustoleum just as expensive as a generic automotive acrylic? It's a pretty color though ;)

  • @backyardsounds It is less expensive

  • I have been watching a lot of vidoes on this "rustoleum paint job" and while, yeah it's a great paint for outdoors, it will not and cannot stand up to gasoline spills, and it oxidizes pretty easy. Now, with that said, is it possible to put an acrylic clear over it? Any pros out there with some feedback on this thought?

  • @backyardsounds I have not tried a clear coat but i can tell you it has been almost a year now and it looks like the day i painted it.

  • I have tried a clear on a pair of side skirts with black rustoleum looks really good.

  • @richpin06a Thank you for sharing the people that asked if they could use clear will be happy

  • Here is a nice write up from one of the guys in the datsun forum I follow. He sprayed on Rustoleum (Tremclad in Canada), Perls and clear. His car looks great! Note, you may have to create an account to see pics but it's worth it:)

  • This looks great. Shops always frown upon this but that's because they have never tried it and also they don't want to loose business. My brother painted his truck 1 year ago and the paint still shines like the first day. It's also durable. I think this is great for a street car that is not going to be a show car. I'd rather spend money on going and stopping faster. Props man!

  • @algomez2007 Thank you for sharing your story.

  • ray ramano

  • @FBSnipedownFTW He paints in his spare time.

  • i plan on doing this saturday and i just wanted your opinion on it. i wanted to see if i can shoot on some clear coat on there to protect the paint. should i? and should i shoot it on before or after paint dries? thanks.

  • @xwmmyster I would do a test first because i am not sure what the clear coat will do with the oil base paint. On your test let the base set for 15 min then spray your clear.

  • @richpin06a my problem is rich that i may thin it tm much because as i lay the paint down it always comes out bumpy as hell, i figure i might be useing to much thinner and i always have the fan pattern spread real wide because ive seen it in other videos, honestly rich it looks real thick when i do 1 part 2parts but at the same time other guys are doing 1 part 3 parts, so i guess im miss informed on how thick paint needs to be,

do you have a wide fan spreading on

  • @sewerrod I am not using a wide nozzle.3 parts paint to 1 part thinner would be even thicker.Try 1 to 1 on a sample piece and see how it comes out for you.

  • @xwmmyster rustoleum makes a clear coat

  • That looks darn good.....it looks alot like an "old school" enamal job that gets

color sanded and buffed.........very very hot rod..........

  • I should have asked this when I left the comment - how many quarts of paint did you go through and how many coats were applied?

I'm going to spray mine this time instead of rolling it, which means I have to wet sand my car to get all the orange peel out before I do so. Also, I'm going to mix in some pearl and see if that shows up. I have 50 grams laying around so might as well try it out. Good enough for 2qt so I'm hoping that's the amount you used. My car is small anyways.

  • @MakeYourself1987 On this Tercel we used 1 QT with a HVLP gun.

  • You sound like Peter Griffin a couple of times lol but anyway nice job.

  • Hey Rich..did u have alot orange peel? I saw some on the trunk in the vid. Ima do this to my car soon but when it dries, Ima sand it with 1200 grit then polish it with mgwires polish

  • @closfromdaeastcoast Yes there was but my father did not care.He did not want me to wet sand and buff it.

  • Did you buff that or is this right after painting

  • @Gracefulize No buff

  • @richpin06a Wow that stuff really shine to not have a clear coat.Great Job.

  • @Gracefulize Just make sure you put some nu finish on it and you will be all set.

  • and on the plastic parts can you tell the differents between metal and plastic???

  • @909cholito No difference

  • how does it bead up in the rain and how does it hold up in the sun

  • @guevodeplomo Almost a year and still beads in the rain and seems very durable to the sun.

  • why did you painted the antenna lol.nice job man,did your neighbor called the city for painting your car?, here in my area, i have a bunch of nosy neighbors lol

  • Would you do it again?

  • @MrOeric0 yes i would

  • @richpin06a hey rich are you in a dry hot climate like florida, if that isnt to personal to ask because Im in chicago and i think i need to wait longer between coats to have it tack up

  • @sewerrod I live in MA so i basically have the same climate as you.

  • How does the paint hold up?

  • @MrOeric0 I am looking out the window right now and it looks just like the day we painted it.

  • nice rich...how long you wait between each base coat?......and what happen if you shoot rust -oleum clear that is latex on top ? is this possible ?

  • @monstadick I wait 10 minutes between coats.Latex over oil never tried that.

  • Hello,

I keep hearing people talk about, paying a car would Russ: or the $100 paint job. I work in a place where there are. 10 painters and a state-of-the-art paint operation. They tell me there's no way you can paint a car. With a product like rust oleum board all base paint and it will hold up. They say you are just wasting your time and money. Can you give me some information that would be the opposite of what they're saying. Thank you

  • your remind me of peter from family guy

  • is that just the kind of hvlp gun you get from home depot?

  • @h2007 Yes it is

  • @richpin06a

    Which one? the $40-50 cheapy?

  • @h2007 Husky hds790

  • @richpin06a my problem rich is that I always try to spray a coat to blend it all and then I get runs and sags, what Im asking is that do you achieve the finish in the final spray you do or can you spray coats until it covers and then work with that

  • @sewerrod I always put the first coat on light and it does not look good but you need a base for the other coats.Second coat much heavier and there should be full coverage.Third coat flow it for maximum finish.

  • @sewerrod Let the paint do the work .Paint flashes, that means what ever your reducing the paint with will evaporate ,lacquer thinner is very fast so is acetone .Oil based paints just stay wet looking and using mineral spirits your flash time is very long .The oil based paint will blend where ever you stop you don't have to do anything . Just stop painting when you finish your final coat .If you miss a spot on the first coat you will be be doing another coat just don't miss it again.....

  • great job! Im going to try this! You said 2 parts paint an 1 part thinner ! I guess im not understanding! (((((( If I have a gallon of paint how much thinner do i need? would it be a half gallon of thinner?))))))

  • @MrJoed29 No you got it 1 qt paint to 1/2 qt thinner

  • can you use automotive primer before painting it with rustoleum?

  • @stobodort yes you can

  • DUDE! You painted a car with Rust-Oleum AND you sound a lot like Raymond from Everybody Loves Raymond.....WIN - WIN....

  • @14212288 Gotta love it..........a big LOL

  • lmfao @ painted tow ball.

  • @pin0ywhat matching tow ball gota love it.....lol

  • ehh alittle bit bright but its alright

  • @19Duster74 Alright great job sounds like you like it

  • you painted the tail gate...

  • no you can not put a normal clear coat from a auto paint they are incompatable and it will act like a paint stripper trust me i did my grill with this same paint then used dupli color clear and it stripped parts made it all rough so i had to sand it all but paint is very durible if you use the rustolium profetional

  • I rolled mine two years ago and it came out okay but this spring I'm definitely going to spray it. This looks much better than my own. At least the ratio paint to mineral spirits is the same as rolling it so now I know. Awesome job.

  • Hey Rich, did you thin out the paint more than 2:1 for your final coat?

  • @BunnyxnxCricket No i kept it at 2:1

  • can you put a normal coat of clear over it ?

  • @cc91teg Good question i do not know.

  • mixing ratio?

  • @210ROCKSTA 2 to 1

  • @210ROCKSTA

1 part odorless mineral spirits and 2 parts Rustoleum paint.

HVLP gun set at 40 on the regulator (I think his compressor is set to 90 psi)

  • You shoulda went with the professional series it lays out and looks three times better, plus its tougher which is what you want. I sprayed both and the prof series was extremely worth he extra money. I still cant believe the shine these paints put out though

  • Can you wax the car after this type of paint job??

  • @warrockbites 2 weeks after put some nu finish on it.

  • thats beautiful

  • does it stay that glossy? i roller painted mine on and its not glossy at all.

  • @jschristian44 yes it is

  • @richpin06a hey rich how many coats did you paint, and how much time in between

  • @sewerrod 3 coats with 10 minutes between coats

  • Comment removed

  • @richpin06a One more quick question rich, Im painting the car outside and its November now and we've been averaging 50 degree days, do you think the paint will settle as well on the 50 and 60 day with the sun in the morning. and also how did you prep the original topcoat did you primer or anything.

  • @sewerrod I have never painted a car in 50 deg weather to know what would happen but it will dry slower for sure.We only primed the repair places on the car.

  • I painted my car with the same paint, except different color. When I mixed I used acetone, unfortunately the paint faded after 3 years.

  • just wondering,about the primer,i'm assuming you used rusto,yes?

also what ratio did you use in mixing the primer?.... also with mineral spirits?

can't get over how good that car looks, great job

  • @megatron804 Very low tech on this one we used dupli.color filler primer only on areas that were repaired

  • Kirker Urethane is good stuff, about $60...

  • What brand and model spray gun and HP compressor are you using, Electric or Gas?

  • @bestmobilecomputer I am using a Husky HDS790 gun with a 2 hp Speedaire compressor running on 220 volts.

  • You know you're driving a beater when it's time to whip out the Rustoleum!

Personally I prefer the $125 Earl Scheib paint special. If you slip em an extra $10, they'll even roll your windows up first.

  • On my 74 Monte Carlo Landau, I used Red Devil satin black latex enamel and created a vinyl top. Very light almost dry coats with a small trim roller. It left the perfect texture like real vinyl. I got asked all the time where I had my vinyl top done. Until you touched it and didn't feel the softness, would you know. But it lasted for a very long time and when it did finally start to weather, just touched it up with another light coat. Saved me a lot of money.

  • @LeakyDiaper I don't think I'd want to know how you'd fix your kid's leaky diaper...

  • Hey Rich you do very nice work..!

  • Hey rich looks like a great job to me.I'm gonna be trying this in a few weeks .I just hope mine turns out as great as yours .Also pay no attention to the HATERS we don't all have $2000 dollars for a paint job, especially on a $1000 dollar car...DUH!!!

  • You rock Rich!

  • I know nothing about painting cars, but I heard that a lot of people will not use oil based paints because they are so difficlt to work with,

Is there anything you cant do!!!

    Great job

  • I've done this before on old trucks. Just wait 2 weeks, do a cut and buff, then apply Nu-Finish. The paint will last forever as long as you keep nu-finish on it.

  • @DemoFly thank you for your insight

  • It looks like it is wet!If it is dry that is sick.

  • @TOMOFONO 2 hr old

  • here we go with the rustoleum paint bit. You will get thousands of hits.

  • Thanks for doing this project. It is right on point for me right now. I wish you would have done a video on the prep work on this project so we could have learned from your do's and don'ts in preparing along with any short cuts. How long did you have to let this dry? I am thinking of doing mine in the open air since I have no shop, For my purposes it does not have to be absolutely perfect. I thought a 50/50 mix might work, your 2:1 is helpful. Any comments you might have I would appreciate.

  • How long did you wait between each coat? Did you fill in any dents and did you use a primer ? Looks awesome btw.

  • @Arnthorg 10 minutes between coats fixed all the rust spots and yes i did primered it.

  • what make is you gun?

  • @barnettboys13 I am embarrassed to say it is a Husky HDS790

  • Looks good.

  • Yes let us know after you remove all the tape

  • Cool,

  • you must show us how the car looks like with all the tape and newspapers off. That looks awesome what are the advantages of using oil-based paints?

  • @Chupria Cheap !!!!! LOL

  • Nice work dude ,I've been shooting garden tractors and snow equipment with oil based paint and always had great results from it .But never tried it like you did .Looks nice hope he likes it .

    Reg VE9REJ Chnl .

  • OOH, shiny.

  • wow looks awesome

  • do you wetsand it after, how many coats did you put on? what about a clear. looks amazing
