What people don't get is dowry was supposed to be female inheritance back in the day when girls did not share the hereditary land. No one asks the question as to why these girls are married off to these Daanavs in the first place (in cases that they are actually tormented for dowry). To assume that dowry is bad is to throw away the Indian system and taking on the western one (Is this good or bad? I don't know), but those who make laws want to ignore this for their own benefit.

In our culture this matter was resolved by family member or community leader and matter was kept secret. The matter was resolved in one or two month. If you carefully look at Indian culture - it is nothing like it was 200 years ago. People knew much better - today they are dumbed down into thinking that culture does not go beyond religious zeal and attacking "western" tendencies. Now the dowry is removed by law so a women can go to in-laws house with her tits and lower part of her body .This will be part of her investment in new home.
