The imperium is nothing without the mechanicus. Only the red priests know how technology works, if the mechanicus would dissapear all human technology would falter and die.
The imperium would perish in no time.
Even space marines needs skilled techpriests to be created.
Plus the mechanicus have huge armies (not as huge as the imperium though)
not to mention the titan legions and their fleets.
Neither would I, I am one of those who would find piercing and tattoos too painful. You would need a pretty good doctor to replace your bits with machinery.
