@lollebiffen well, the silmarillion contains several parts, and describes the beginning of middle earth, but continues until the time after the story of Lord of the Rings. In fact, that story is included, in three pages, to give an impression about the high density.
The book indeed is dramatic and sad, and some stories in it can really get me into a "down mood", such as the one of Turin Turambar. It is a different style than the Lord of the Rings, and not everyone will enjoy the book, but I do
Melkor can't be Sauron - those are 2 different characters...
Well, not the first one, if you count "The Hobbit", "The LOTR", and "The History of Middle-Earth"...however, I think, the "History" (as well as the CoH) were written AFTER the Silm.
It is the first book about the beginnings of Middle-earth.
Melkor, or Morgoth as he's known also, was a Vala or god-like figure turned evil. Sauron was a Maia, or angelic-like figure who became Morgoth's follower and like Morgoth, turned evil.
"Sauron had a part, and was only less evil than his master...but in after years he rose like a shadow of Morgoth and a ghost of his malice, and walked behind him on the same ruinous path down into the Void."
Very nice video and music. The silmarilion is my favourite book of all times. But a movie? Seems almost impossible because it is so complex and there are so many stories involved. But didn't people say the same about Lord of the rings lol? It would need like 10 movies!
"Yeah, The Silmarillion will be the most difficult to do."
It will be difficult because its much more abstract ... how will the making of the Valar, and the Music of the Ainur be portrayed? Or Eru Illuvatar for that matter?
There are probably film precedents for such theological phenomena, but only The Ten Commandments comes to mind.
The other thing is that the First Age is when everything is at its most majestic, such as the duel between Fingolfin and Morgoth. Those things add oomph.
Hi nightowl8936. The Ten Commandments actually sounds like a good idea to me. For the beginning of a potential film. There was first a call - a demand - to sing ! ? What about, out of the dark, a voice was heard, demanding that there should be music ? That`s how the book starts, anyway. And that shouldn`t be too difficult to put on film.
5 years from now we`ll all be waiting for the final part of The silmarillion in film. I Hope !
"What about, out of the dark, a voice was heard, demanding that there should be music?"
It gets more complex than just a narration as was done in 10 Commandments.
The music played and the themes in it becomes the story of the Silmarillion, but not the whole story.
Just as there were Tolkien scholars and artists who visualized what Sauron or the Black Riders looked like, The Silmarillion will require gifted musicians who might actually be able to conceptualize what the music was like.
your welcome :) check out The Children of Hurin, its a little more in depth about a particular story in The Silmarillion. im in the middle of it right now but we all know how it ends hahahaha
Excellent.....if only they had someone with your understanding working on the movie, instead of most of the douchebags that actually get involved in things like that but have little understanding. Possibly then, the story could be told correctly.
No words alone can describe the intense and deep mythology Tolkien has created in The Silmarillion.
The magnificent Silmarillion captures the reader instantly and manages the impossible; to convince the reader that this is indeed lost tales from a mythical Europe, thousands and thousands of years ago back in a forgotten past.
Well, I wouldn't exactly say that the tales are from a mythical Europe, since Tolkien used stories of the world he created himself. They might remind of European myths to some readers, however, Tolkien himself was talking about Middle-Earth as a place existing by itself, with no direct connection to Europe or any other part of our world.
So, I am not quite sure that your statement might be considered absolute, even though there might seem to be some unintended allusions from legends.
Feanor was indeed the mightiest of ALL the eldar... there is no one that could match him.Not even the might and splendor of the Ainur could desuade him from giving the greatest work ever in middle earth for its repair. That is his only folly-all else 1 must understand was done of fey spirit. For Finwe was the lord of the elves who lay claim to be the greatest in wisdom and renoun, hence their pride... to even leave valinor.Feanor led them all.Allthough Fingolfin became renoun, take heed to fact...
Fëanor son of Finwë the greatest of Elven kind i don't completly agree with that. He did made the silmarils and had great skills and was a brave and powerful warrior but to call him the greatest elf is just too much. By he's arrogance he brought doom on the elven kind and because of him the murder of elf by elf occur. Im not saying that he did wrong chasing Morgoth but in the process he lost it the oath of fëanor is a terrible things that brought fear and misery to the noldor race.
He was the greatest, he had the best craftsmanship of all who existed, he created the elven script, he was the only one with the initiative to confront Morgoth.
I surely blame the Valar because they did nothing about Melkor until he destroyed every single kingdom. It was not Fëanor fault but Valar's who did not see Morgoth malice and fled him.
Well for me there are some things that are important in terms of truth. First of all, I respect Finrod because of his great wisdom and unlimited Estel. He knows the price of friendship and the power of the Force. Sometimes he does things nobody understands, but he knows his goals and they are absolutely objective (often, he's just a little smarter than others, who dont understand him).
But the main thing (for me) is that he can sacrifice himself and save his friend this way. Its important,IMHO.
Baruk khazad!!! Elves have stupid ears!!!No just a joke,i love the silmarillion very much and i also like elves, but i alwasy wanted to say this!!!Tolkien is an awesome writer!!!
The Silmarillion is utterly unfilmable. Too many names and places, too many events or stretches of time summed up in a paragraph that would take much longer to do properly on screen.
I think that a Silmarillion TV series, where they can move at a slower pace, could MAYBE work, though.
With Peter Jackson at the helm, this could be done, but in more than three movies. It could take years and years, but hey maybe it will come in the lifetime of our children's children and Peter Jackson's children.
its good to see others love this book a much as me :D
its my favourite book, reading it for the 4th time and still cant get enough of its... greatness.
Id love for there to be a movie, but at the same time i know it cant possibly be made into one, too much detail to put down to a movie, even a triligy.
and anyway the Silmarillion is what us full on fans of Tolkien have that others dont.
Fingers crossed a director will do it. But I think the only way it will come about is if the generation which is now captured by TLOTR "trilogy" will read The silmarillion. We have a masterful film trilogy in TLOTR. Would anyone dare out their money behind TSM ? I hope so. Let`s lobby Hollywood !
Morgandrim about the generation which is now captured by LotR: I'm 13 years old (almost 14) and I'm reading the Silmarillion atm (I'm at halve now) So I don't think you have to worry about that ;-)

i read all tolkien's books about middle-earth, including 'the children of hurin' and i highly recommend it.I was so addicted to its plot that i finished it in about 10 hours...
P.S.its a book that gave me an uneasy feeling because of its sad events..but still its great
Well, first I watched the movies of Lord of the Rings, and I loved it. Later I the books. I've also readed the children of Húrin. I readed some information about Arda's history on wikipedia and it's now time to read the Silmarillion.
it's not the best case when you start from the movies. i did too, but now i regret it, because i cannot criticize it while the others can - i got PJ's opinion about the characters of the LOTR, but not the "mine" one.
You are cool that you've read the CoH befor the Silm!
When I saw the Fellowship of the Ring movie for the first time I had just done the same thing with the book, and since Boromir dies at the beginning of The Two Towers book, while he dies the end of the first movie, I got somewhat lost. Now that I read the three books and saw the three movies, I can say P.J. was masterful. The third movie was simply perfect!
Oh my word Gabeler, you are in for a hell of a treat reading The Silmarillion. I`ve read The Lord of the Rings a few times and think it`s one of a kind. But The Silmarillion is so fantastic...
So beautyfull I watch it every day it is the best silmarillion film I've seen on youtube. There aren't much people of my age (13 years old) who are interested in the books of Tolkien. I am going to read the Silmarillion soon :)
The video is perfect elvensoulforever! Like stars in shadow shimmering! The ONLY thing I don't like is the picture at 0:53. DON'T CHANGE THE MUSIC. It's just good for this movie, it mades me cry. Hail to Tolkien!
I liked it. You should watch mine and make one with that length mixed with your graphics. I would make one like this style but I'm not quite yay good w/ my movie maker yet.
And I'm not sure if you have the right to copyright this since the rights to "The Silmarillion" arn't expired yet.
I've watched your video but, unfortunately, my comp is gleeching now, so I'm running in the safe mode and there is no sound :( but when I fix it, I'll definitely watch it again!
To me it seemed pretty interesting and detailed - good job! Of course, the plus is that it is much longer - you could put more information in that.
--continued in the next comment - didn't fit in one--
The thing with mine is that I didn't wanna change the music, however, it to set some repeats there - it would bother, because the melody is almost the same.
But anyway, this is my first video project (that I've actually done for my computer graphics class) and I'm glad that I've begun to work with the video.
BTW, the copyright is set on the video ONLY. Not on the story itself, of course :)
i haven't read the book but it looks so dramatic and sad.

A very nice and sensitive bit of video work.
Silmarillion happens to be my favorite of all the Tolkien works. Its so richly written.
It may be many years yet, but somone will take up the challenge of the Silmarillion, but it would have to be a very gifted director to make it work.
I was pleased with Jackson's work, and the changes that were made to the movies from the books, but many people were nitpicky and didn't like it.
Whoever does Silmarillion has to be deeper than Jackson.

I liked it. You should watch mine and make one with that length mixed with your graphics. I would make one like this style but I'm not quite yay good w/ my movie maker yet.
And I'm not sure if you have the right to copyright this since the rights to "The Silmarillion" arn't expired yet.

Thank you!
I'm glad you liked it!
