@cbeyer23 If you don't turn your work, it will take on a spiral appearance. There is no way to eliminate this without turning after each row. As well, turning allows the stitches to sit better, and in many cases, will require less rows to complete a design.
If a pattern specifies to turn, and you don't, in the case of a design with a particular pattern, you will lose your way, and the pattern will become confusing. (Not so with this pattern, but it will spiral without turning.)
@flynegle44 Start with 11 single crochet, increase to 22, then next row, increase to 33 by making 2 dc in every 2nd stitch. Then continue with dc in every stitch until the hat is long enough. Have an awesome day!!
i was wondering... can you do a beanie hat in slow motion.. i am following as closely as i can.. but i dont know how to make the hat.. lol... please. :D
For a 4 year old, start with 11 double crochet. In the next row, make 2 double crochet in each stitch, which will result in 24 stitches around. (The first chain 2 counts as 1 stitch. In the next row, double crochet around, but making 2 double crochet in every 2nd stitch, which will result in 36 stitches in that row.
@Hectanooga1 Thanks! I just finished making my father a hat, following this guide. It turned out great. I'll start working on the hat for my 4yo nephew, after seeing the chunky slippers video, I've decided to make those too.
I highly doubt that he'll get much use of the hat since he's in Texas (unless they get unexpected snow -- like last year) but I wasn't about to tell him since he was so excited about it. I know he'll be able to wear the slippers.
Hi armijo03, I used one strand of a beige color, and one strant of a rust color for the main body of the hat. The bottom brim was 2 strands of black. The pom-pom was
Thanks for this video, it's been helpful. Earlier this week, I made a daughter a hat without a guide. I just started crocheting. (I'm new to crochet.)
Thanks to your video, I see ways I can improve in the future. My 4yo nephew saw part of the crocheting process. We were on Skype. As soon, as my daughters hat was made he said, "Great, you can now crochet a hat for me. I want one in red!" Any recommendations on the size hat I should make for a 4 year old? I'll do a search to see what I find.
You would change it into a slouchie by adding more stitches.... but not by doubling the last row. You are at 40 stitches, after the 2nd increase... so increase every 2nd stitch, which will bring you to 60 stitches around. Then make as many rows as needed for the length of the hat, then for the band, decrease back to 40 stitches by crocheting 2 stitches together every 3rd stitch,.
If you used 2 strands of worsted weight yarn, and a size 9mm crochet hook, then it must be that you are holding too tightly on the yarn. That will stretch out the yarn, and make the stitches very small. Try to loosen up on your tension.... I know that is difficult for beginners.. as they usually have an iron grip on the yarn! But,... practise makes perfect!!
Hi Catz2505! To make the hat larger, the easiest thing to do is, instead of making 9 double crochet in the ring, make 10, or if you want it to be roomy, make 11.
You could enlarge it in rows 4 or 5, but for a beginner the easiest, and less complicated way, is to make the extra stitches immediately, and then continue with the remainder of the pattern.
Emi - I love this beanie and its so easy, but a little bit to tight for my head. Should I do one more round of increases and then just the dc to finish? I'm new to all this and wondered how to make it just a little larger. Thanks for your videos they're great!
I'm just curious, this is the first hat pattern I've seen where you turn the work each row, whats the reason for this, what difference does it have ?

@cbeyer23 (Ran out of characters) Also, with turning, there is no right or wrong side to your finished garment, both sides will look the same.

what size crochet hook did you use?
spmtam1 2 months ago
The average adult head is 22 to 23 inches... so this hat should work out to those measurements.
Hectanooga1 2 months ago
How many inches does the hat have to be.

Hi KitkatNEF!
Yes, you could use bulky yarn.... it may turn out a tad smaller though... it all depends on how tight your tension is.

hi! could i use the Lionbrand bulky yarn?
thanks!
