so who do those guys think they're shootin' at, they can't see no stinkin' badges, no whites of ther' eyes. They didn't even know where Duke was. Pretty good Hollywood shootin' though.
pretty good movie. saw it on netflix. i like his old movies, but the ones where he's older(1960s-1970s) are his better movies. still these movies when he was young did the job for the time
@stopper1941 That mount is known as the Crouper Mount because the back end of the horse is known as the Crouper. Yakima Canutt taught Wayne how to do that and other stunts. They also worked out a system of screen fighting to make it seem more realistic. This particular film was from Wayne's Monogram series from 1933-34.
Fire a heavy caliber weapon without holding on tight will spin it around from the recoil. But this is the movies where a lot of shots come from six guns hey? We finished appaloosa in Nov 07. Hitch fires an 8 ga dbl. 'DaFlikkers' goog it
Very good point and right on the money. NO, most cowboys in the open range era 1867 to 1877, could not afford the new cartridge Colts, S&W's or Remingtons. Most carried percussion Colts and Remingtons, or cartridge conversions of the percussion models. Percussion models are slower to load, but ballistically as good or better than the cartridge models.
And the gun never gets dislodge until he gives it a gentle tug to retrieve it. I also liked how it didn't get jammed with dirt after he pulled it back.
Revolvers are almost as reliable as the sunrise, and are very hard to jam with dirt or poor maintenance. Auto pistols are finicky and need good maintenance to maintain reliability. My concealed weapon permit weapon of choice is a revolver. They WORK, and will shoot rings around any auto pistol accuracy-wise!
I challenge you to actually try that. Any mud in the muzzle, and your 1911 will bulge or split the barrel, guaranteed. And worst case is the cartridge case will also rupture and detonate the remaining rounds in the magazine.
I have seen several Glock .40's destroyed by the rupture of a cartridge case that detonated the magazine rounds. Not sure what caused the Glock "ka-boom", but there was no barrel obstruction. They tried to place blame on the ammo!
Lol, maybe the Glock was sabotoged by MACV-SOG Eldest Son Op.
Personally, I never had a failure with one and used both the M1911 and M9 and it was a sad day when Marines made the switch, outdated or not. As you know, a lot of Recon still carry the .45.
The revolver used is a big frame Colt or S&W double astion revolver. Pulling the trigger is all that is required to fire all 6 shots. Cocking the hammer first is only needed in Single Action revolvers such as the Colt 1873 or Remington 1875. S&W's big frame Single Actions were the .44 American (1869), .44 Russian(1871) and .45 Schofield (1875).
Colt's first big-frame .45 Colt caliber double action revolver was available in 1878. Colt's smaller framed .41 and .38 caliber "Thunderer" and "Lightning" double actions were available in 1877. The .41 "Thunderer" was Billy the Kid's favorite. These Colt DA's loaded through a side gate exactly like the 1873 Colt Single Action. Colt didn't invent the swing-out cylinder until the 1892 series of .38 caliber revolvers.

Only problem is, if that's a single action Colt, you have to thumb the trigger back after each shot.

To me, it resembles a Colt m1917, I own one made in "1916"! and it shoots like a dream, mind you, very low on the target!

The man mounting the horse was George "Yakima" Canutt, best horse stuntman in the history of movies. He was Pando's right-hand man in this movie.

Who cares about Guns, look how he mounted that horse! How many of you pilgrims out there can do that!

I put strings on many things, zippers, frying pans, it's just like Pee Wee's playhouse actually. Of course you must include suspension of disbelief

You can bury a Colt 1911 in mud and it'll fire.

Ah, but the thing is, I don't think double-action revolvers were even invented yet in the time period this movie is supposed to take place in.
