Loved this show when I was a kid, But....... is it just me or does the "rock that was as old as creation, that became magically fertile" look like a penis
Lachlan98er - Monkey was a Japanese television series dubbed into English and shown in Britain in 1981 (and other countries too). Unlike all the cloned tv cop/csi crime/zombie filled/talent(less) shows/banal comedies/video cam chasing crims documentaries that fill our tv stations these days, "Monkey" was the coolest, most fun-filled, whackiest piece of fun television around in its day. I was 18 back in 1981, and certainly in Britain in became cult viewing for everyone in my generation.
Why does everyone call it "Monkey Magic"? It is "Monkey", just "Monkey"! Get it? It was never called "Monkey Magic" on television, in the opening titles, so why do you numbskulls keep calling it "Monkey Magic"??!!!

@psychonaut3 You are correct, "Monkey Magic" was an anime series broadcast in the 1990s, but both shows are versions of the "Journey To The West" stories. Because of the theme song however, people often refer to "Monkey!" as "Monkey Magic" and if you look it up (Wiki), you'll see that the reference is acceptable. At any rate, if you want to be pedantic then the title of the show is "Saiyūki".
I luv this show, its got a special charm to it, and its not just all silly nonsense, theres mythology there too, and each episode has a moral in it, I think Monkey is just awesome. Such ashame bout the woman who played Tripikata, and she was so young too.
i miss this show.the abc always had/has the best shows,monkey,the goodies,drwho,secret valley,inspector gadget,danger mouse,roger ramjet,astro boy,etc etc.thankyou abc for giving me such a fulfilling childhood and wonderful memories.
@TheMado360 I don't see how, Monkey Magic was made in 1978 and Power Rangers was made in 1993, What is it with Generation Y and thinking that the things they grew up with are the only things that ever existed. 21 year old narrow minded moron you are. Do some research before you comment on things you know nothing about.
@westeh No, Power Rangers goes back about just as far. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (the first English version) debuted in 1993. Most Sentai shows were much like this one was. But Monkey Magic is my favorite by far. My first time seeing this was three years ago, and I've missed it ever since. Also Kamen Raider was on the scenes in the late 70's as well. Just wiki it. Wish they had sold the DVD's here as well, cause I would buy in a heartbeat. :)
It was a rhetorical question, but - Toshiyuki starred as Pigsy in "Monkey" in 1978. He only appeared in season 1 (the first 26 episodes), and was replaced in season 2 (the last 26 episodes) by Tonpei Hidari. The main reason for this was that, before NTV (Nihon-TV) had decided to make a second season of "Monkey", they offered him the lead role in a big drama project called "Ikenaka Genta 80kg". This heart-warming drama started in 1980, and was a big success for Toshiyuki.
Journey of the West is a tough story to remake. It was designed to be read, which means any dramatization will always lack some of the essence of the original. It's the same reason even the incredibly elaborate Lord of the Rings movie series couldn't even come close to the story. It has nothing to do with nationality or culture, but complexity. A single chapter of a simplistic novel like Jurassic Park took an entire feature film to reproduce. The English translation of JttW takes four books.
@cybus443 its based on a chinese myth like white people (BBC) can remake it) hong kong has been doing remakes for years. Japanese style the idea and got it all wrong with a black staff thats suppose to be gold and even took the idea to make dragon ball
@cybus443 If the BBC remade it they'd ruin it. They'd "feminise" it like they did with Dr Who. It would lose all its character and end up looking like Eastenders.
@cmloz That would certainly fit in with the faux Oriental accent but I'm sure it's "irrepressible" because of Monkey's character. squidoo.com/monkey-magic-tv-series has the intro monologue.
