Reading "The Master & Margarita" for my Occult Literature class.
Having discussed what the characters might be like, or how they might appear, in comparison with what we're used to imagining, or have seen portrayed; we then watched part of the movie, in order to make contrast.
I have to say...
Dude. This Jesus, is "way" cooler, than the typical Jesus...
Well, he's more "human", more normal; just a chill guy with a very passive philosophy.
In most movies he's often very "matter of fact" about things (If that makes sense), because "He is, the son of God almighty" so everything has a reason, and a purpose.
Here however, he's simply "Jesus", and though he is the son of God, he's alot more chill about it.
@MartialDuartist Well that's what I find unrealistic. Philosophers, at least honest and determined ones, are never like that in courts. Such people never break, never kneel before the power, they look with pride towards upcoming martyrdom. This Jesus tries to avoid his fate, while there were many other humans in history who considered themselves righteous and wrongly accused and acted very much the like the Gospel Jesus when brought to the court.
@RabMaksim - You need to keep in mind that in this book this whole story about Jesus and Procurator was told by Satan to Bezdomny and Berlioz, which means that some facts about Jesus were deliberately distorted in it.
Yeah but this Jesus was right in his assessment of humanity, and the angry guard Eg.
Therefore hes not avoiding his fate. Also, you nor I have ever met Jesus.
We know what we've seen on film or read in books.
The fact of the matter is, Jesus was a "man". It'd be normal for a man, to have fear of hanging on a cross. This Jesus demonstrates, that if he "could" choose another way; he'd prefer it. (In fact, so did the biblical Jesus, when he asked God to let it not be the case.)
@MartialDuartist Like I answered to more1and1more, and I'm talking about how realistic the behaviour is, now what actually happened. Its normal for man for to fear the crusifiction, but its not normal for ideologist to show that fear at the trial itself. Ideologists almost never try to humble themselves before the persecutors. For example in the present day, I am watching some trials in the Hague tribunal, and the convicted act much more like Biblical then Wolands Jesus.
I don't think he's submitting to anything, or anyone. I don't think he's bowing-down, breaking, nor humbling himself. I think he's just being a genuine pacifist.
Thanks for the info! Mr. Lavrov did a fabulous job, and so did all the other actors. Sergei Bezrukov did the best Jesus portrayal I have ever seen, anywhere. You really did Youtube watchers a tremendous favor by uploading this series, with subtitles.
I watch it often--it's a gift that keeps on giving.
I am athiest, in fact anti religion, but this scene is beautiful and touching. Maybe the Hegemons who rule over us today will give up their tyrannical struggle and se that only freedom and liberty bring prosperity.
it is Sergey Bezrukov. He also played Pushkin's, Yesenin's roles. He is really genius. Here is the link. Look it. Sergey is reading Yesenin's poem. It is without English subtitles, but his voice and intonation.... they're amazing)
Reading any piece of literature prior to watching a movie that is based on it is always a good idea. This way you don't limit your imagination and your own perception by the scenes and images from the movie that you would already have in your mind otherwise. Plus, it is always good to compare how you viewed some scenes in the book with the way they are presented in the movie.
@zombieseezombiedo I am apologise, but first, it is not a movie, it's a serial. Second, this serial is not intended for your mentality! Sorry, but with your mentality you should watch only high budget films, with special effects.

Simply stunning, thank you so much!!!! Sergei Bezrukov is a genius, but the other actors are fabulous too. Do you know who plays the Procurator?

@iloirtimusiikista "Do you know who plays the Procurator?"
- Kirill Lavrov. One of my favorite actors from Saint-Petersburg. Sadly, he passed away in 2007.

Always read the book first. Read the O'conner and Burgin translation, it is the best.

I'm reading one chapter at a time, then watching to get better clarity if I miss something. Good idea?
