OK, I'm a young 57. I've been addicted to extremely good, and as a result obscure rock n roll since age 8. Seen a million concerts, best in my life was Joe Walsh w/ Barnstorm in Lincoln, Nebr. in '73. Even back in the day, I always sort-of knew Capt. Beyond was out there, never really listened, always fig. they were some "also-rans" that also had albums in the rock section. Thanks to XM / Little Steven's Underground Gargage, I heard this magic for the 1st. time this month. Oh my dear God!!
This is one of my all time FAVORITE bands. I irst heard them - on LP of course in 1972! I heard the second album - Sufficiently Breathless and was hooked. I have all three on CD, but just love the first two. I wish they had stayed with the original lineup - it was pure magic. They have a huge fanbase in Europe. Oh well, at least we have the two great albums...listen on my peops...and remember, 'Spiral, purple jasmine trees - what we're having for fantasies...'
What else can be said by this "obscure" band. Nothing less than fantastic for those who truly know and recognize good rock music. A "hybrid" band if you will, Armageddon also featured the talents of Mr. Bobby Caldwell. They put out one LP and that was it. Nonethelss, another lost gem in my humble opinion.
Well, the percussion on this album is the best in my opinion. 110% flat out and that is how it is supposed to be. Switching the electric guitar here for an acoustic guitar at this part of the album sure won a lot of admiration from me.
Once upon a time I had this album on vinyl LP but it disappeared. I am fortunate to still have it on cassette tape. I listen to it regularly, especially side one, if I need a boost or when I'm working out. It just never gets old.
I agree with the comments here about this band being underrated! Think of the "successful" crap bands we've had to endure since this great stuff came out in the 70's! Also, in the waaay underrated hall of fame, I would also submit that Crack The Sky fits the bill. Listen to their first disc!
What an awesome song by an awesome group of musicans clearly ahead of their time. Timeless even! I remember the first time I heard this. From a record belonging to one of my best friend's older brother. Was in the early 70s. It still gives me chills nearly 40 years later. Had not heard this in decades! Thanks for posting this!
Another aspect of this album that people tend to forget was the QUALITY of the recording. I used to sell top end stereo back then and this was a go-to record for demos.
Captain Beyond was so amazing that I think we were so floored we had to catch our breath....I saw them live at the Whiskey back in the early 70's.....the most underrated band in rock history....
@powellmech they were man!! They opened for Alice Cooper at the Hollywood Bowl...Played the 1st album straight through - just like the record starting with Dancing Madly Backwards and kicked the audience's ass!!!
I've read all the comments, and true,Rod Evans was great, but does nobody realize that the bass is LeeDorman, and drummer Ron Bushy, from I ron Butterfly?
@MegaCoolguy666 You're absolutly correct, my fault. Lee Dorman told me they talked about doing a tour, and using Ron Bushy, and from what I've seen of Iron Butterfly, I think it's a good idea. Rod Evans voice was so great, and I loved the first two albums, the third just did not have the magic.
@1969alias you're right about Dorman but totally wrong about Bushy. the other Iron Butterfly member was Rhino on guitar from IB's metamorphsis album. I give Bushy credit for inagaddadavida and some creative drumming with limited skills, but Bushy couldn't carry Caldwell's practice pad...something he has in common with most every other rock drummer
Extreme memories. The first time I heard this I was at a friend's house, (let's just say LSD was involved) we used his dog as a coffee table....OK nevermind, I'm starting to feel woooooooozy.
Excellent post rsm29! many thanks for a "trip" down memory lane. :)
I'm so gratified to read all the comments regarding this short lived but amazing band. It's one of only like 30 or so lps I can listen to all the way through. And yes--I still have my 3d lp cover (exfept its a bit chipped)
ppl say we're pretty unsophisticated..but the first time i heard this tremendous band was on my buddy's 8-Track while we were driving thru the cornfields near Union, Nebraska....! this band was EFFing GREAT !
Wow. I was a teenager the first time I heard this song, and it was also in the summer. I was down the shore on the boardwalk with a few of my friends, and we had just finished smoking something nice. We went to go hang by this ride which featured an awesome and loud music system. I will never forget the rush that I got when I heard this song. I just stood there after the song was over. As soon as I got home I went to the store and bought the album.
My first 8 track ever! Crusin down LSD (Lake Shore Drive Chicago) in my 65 Ford Falcon Station Wagon with the windows down and the pedal to the metal listening to this album over & over again. Talk about under rated musicians, listen to Bobby Caldwells drums! what a work horse! Thanks for the posting.
Some of the greatest drumming ever on this. Bobby Caldwell is unbelievable. PLEASE guys, including the elusive Rod Evans, PLEASE reform the original line-up and do so some gigs. Bring back the Captain.
@jonsilence you are so right about Caldwell...he is such a monster on drums...i saw him play with CB at a club in hollywood ...the starwood or whiskey, can't remember...they kicked ass... Caldwell did a one handed drum solo that put most everyone else to shame while they used too hands!!
OH Man!.. where did we go wrong?... I mean Captain Beyond, Tommy Bolin, Captain Beefheart,.. so much all almost forgotten! Thank you!!! You brought much cheer to an old Freek!
no...we crackers were into Motown too...rap was the result of unanswered Motown questions about justice, equality and the dream WE ALL SHOULD HAVE AN EVEN PLAY FOR. Peace.
I also remember Captain Beyond;got all three albums from the A&S record dept in the 70's.ELoy was another good band, and Lucifers Friend.Today there are still some really good bands(rock, metal, dance and pop with good melodies and intelligent/meaningful lyrics);it's just that they don't make it on mainstream radio all the time.Mostly the shit gets on there.

@rsm29.. I attended a performance by his group in a small rock club known as Fuzzies' Place in Amarillo TX. It was a let down for sure, but I still love his vocals with the Capt.
Wasn't Bobby Caldwell associated with Johnny Winter at some point? Or who might I be thinking of?
