  • I like too much this man. Even more than Miles.

  • Who is the pianist ?

  • Omg, look at his face, what a poor life

  • this is amazing...........

  • great musician with a wonderfull sensitivity!

  • best

  • why is the pianosolo ended this brute?

  • @Avalon6142

Sorry, YouTube doesn't allow more than 10 minutes per video and the performance is longer, so I had to do a cut.

  • ahhh...

  • There was no more complete jazz musician than Chet when he first appeared on the scene - They called him the Male Elizabeth Taylor - he was so handsome. He played by ear. I think the jury is still out regarding drugs and art. The combination produced too much greatness for us not to stop and wonder. I've known too many artists who confessed to doing their best work while drugged (especially on alcohol) for me to pass judgement. Chet was the greatest, but he died violently as he lived.

  • Hauntingly beautiful, many thanks.

  • chet baker foi e sera eterno com seus solos e som lindo de trompete

  • Does anyone know if This concert was recorded on CD?

  • Just sweet.. a lovely man in pain...great singer, great performer...sweet as hell...

  • I found this concert on DVD recently through Amazon...quite cheap. The audio is particularly excellent as is the video.

  • Thinking of all the amazing trumpet players that one could attempt to emulate, (Dizzy, Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, Wynton, etc), I wish I could do what Chet does. His solos are often better and almost always more beautiful than the actual melody of the songs he plays over. When he picked up the horn to play, he gave the impression he could solo all day on the changes, and that nothing except pure cool would come out of the bell. I miss you Chet Baker.

  • well said.

  • well he had a life up there with sinatra and fitzgerald when it comes to the american songbook

  • Beautifull .........

  • Back in the day, jazz purists looked down on Chet 4 singing. I dont fathom - its perfect & compliments the trumpet so well.

  • This is insanely good-shows so much dynamics & raw talent of a lifetime in 10 minutes

  • If you like the music of today and have never heard of Chet Baker, buy or rent or find out when the documentary on this true "genius" of the music world is and was. The documentary is so terrific and also very funny and gets into this man's head with such great film clips and live performances. You will want to own it, so go to Google and order it.

  • Would have been great to hear the complete performance. Still in a abundance of great music however.

  • @MattieSongbird

Sorry, I had no choice: YouTube doesn't allow more than ten minutes per video.

  • Oh no worries man, good stuff here.

  • @MattieSongbird You can get the double CD of this show quite easily.

  • Chet Baker lived much longer than quite a few of his contemporaries. The only reason people waste so much time discussing his addictions is because he deteriorated so greatly aesthetically. He was brilliant regardless, let it be.

  • do you mean his appearance or his music?

  • ......EXTRA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Beautiful:Thank you for sharing.

  • My goodness! This is so insanely good. There's a whole story here, and I get that, but this moment, in and of itself, says enough on its own.

What an extraordinary talent. I am hooked.

  • He felt & knew things we never will or can...& still we admire from afar.

  • breaks my heart

  • déchirant, somptueux chet baker, merci pour cette vidéo

  • it's tragic that heroin had to get in the way of this beautiful man's extraordinary talent. Heck you can see the weariness in his eyes. And just a little info on this whole "drugs" thing, most jazz musicians in the 40's 50's and 60's used HEROIN. Just to inform the uninformed.

  • Il mio mito....difficile esprimere la senzazione che si prova ad ascoltarlo....

  • la natura a volte è molto generosa.chet ne è una dimostrazione.....

  • Absolutely gorgeous. Absoutely astounding. Such a heartfelt rendition. It exceeds even his previous interpretations.

  • Excellent !!!

I hope my brother sees this, just sent him an email.

    Many thanks for the upload...

  • In past 7 months I heard this amazingly touching performance more than 50 times and never enough CHET BAKERs tragic life imbedded into. Hearing more he becomes my favorite, not so funny but sad Valentine. Amazing and old style Jazz in its best.

  • He is beyond the stage..i don't know if he was ''high'' or not...i just know THIS MUSIC is the DOPE FOR ME.....!!

  • Its too bad, his voice wasn't as beautiful as it was when he was young.

My opnion on the drugs, it was a stupid choice, there are apologists out there who think it was necessary for some reason or another, but nobody needs to escape from their own life, least of all with susbstances that slowly destroy your mind. People who think they NEED drugs are addicts.

  • About 1 year to live.

  • one of a kind

  • He was a great performer, a great drug addict and dumber than dumb. Sorry, that is just how it was.

  • stayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy little valentine stay...

  • great

    just great!

  • All the hard work, all the talent, the gift, not enough to keep the world at bay.

  • Nice bass line.

  • makes you fly over your imagination...simply magic!

  • makes you fly over your imagination...simply magic...

  • HIT that note, Chet!

  • My God, the raw emotion in this performance just makes me weak! Those of you who think of Kenny G as a "jazzman" - take heed: THIS is a jazzman!

  • My God, I miss this man and his music. You people listening to Kenny G, thinking you are listening to jazz, need another think - THIS is jazz at its finest. This is what jazz really IS.

  • he's the best!!

  • He is absolutely bellissimo and fantastic.

So smooth, cool and mellow. My favorite song since the early 50's. I always thought The Chairman of the Board Sinatra sang this great but Chet tops him.

Like one commentator said this melts your heart. What more can I say this version is "outstanding".

  • Find him any excuses whatsoever, this, ladies and gentlemen, is pure music, period.

  • I was in there with my sweet valentine!

  • Drugs this , drugs that... He used the poppy plant or the poppy plant used him. They coexisted.

  • @Canaanalbright You never co-exist with a drug, it takes the starring role, eventually , out of spite, murdering you, as the jealousy that existed the moment you met, takes it revenge by removing what's left.

  • I'm about to cry watching this. His version of this song has always melted my heart to a big ol' puddle. I've never heard it live before. His voice was so smooth and lovely and soothing...<3

  • Weak?....impaired?....foolishness¡¡¡. He was simply an outstanding performer, maybe one of the best ever. Just listen. in any case unfortunately this performance in not complete.

  • Where he would have come if the drugs had not squandered much of his talent

  • oh please..

  • @Corporights Sad and all as it is, one rarely exists with out the other.

  • They don't make music like this anymore. Pity I wasn't born earlier.

  • Amazing...but he was so weak, so impaired :s

  • Such a musician :(

  • meravigliosamente chet....grazie...

  • Everyday is a Valentines day... sweet

  • I don't think many people here realize that this represents the absolute best late-period Chet, only because he had to stay clean in Tokyo (well, he was still on methadone maintenance) due to Japan's strict enforcement of drug laws. He simply couldn't get high like he could in Europe or NY.

As a result, his performance level rises above the usual train-wreck quality he was know for in the 80s. The trumpet work here may be his best ever.

  • you can feel the life in his songs...not just singing

  • So sweet & pure.

  • Chet baker rules!!!!!! this is classic!!!!!

    AMAZINGLY WONDERFUL

  • Chet Genius Baker

  • This man was damn cool...so open...almost naively honest...

  • If Chet never got involved in dope he would be up there with Sinatra etc

  • @mickysax1 he is up there w/Sinatra. Frank drank..was a mean drunk...his drug of choice.

  • I think it's because of dope that Chet is where he is today.. Yes, dope is not so good for your health, but oh the inspiration and creativity you gain when you're high!

  • Most musos, actors, artists, we don't use drugs for recreation, as much as for escape from our own minds, and our own grandour. Our own need to obtain perfection. It's a thumb to suck on.

  • @thomas834 ..not worth the price

  • Pure Genius.

  • I have always adored this song, please come and check out my version of it,

    Thanks

  • He IS the IS !!!

  • Amazing!!!!

  • un genio..!

  • thanks for adding these Chet Baker live performances. He is wonderful and I never saw him live.

  • impresive

  • Great performance

  • stupenda versione

  • just say it on my site

  • Every now and again someone comes along and shows the rest of us what it is like to enjoy their magic. Chet was one of those few. Thanks for sharing.

  • I love the way you put that- thank you.

  • Chet Baker Brings IT every time!!! He's moved me more than any artist ever. They say, a singer can't sing it with their hart , if they haven't had it OR been there! You hear it in his voice and you can see it in the deep lines all over his face... he'll always move me like none other.... Chet Rules!!

  • Best

  • EMOUVANT tout simplement

  • I see his pain in this performance, he's only a shell of a man.

  • alanbalfe,

His shell of a man is more than most men ever become. You should be so fortunate to produce such perfection in your own chosen field. I know I'm not there yet.

  • you can feel chets life in his voice....

  • Artistry transcends mere drugs. Michael Jackson was bigger than aspirin just like Chet Baker was much bigger than heroin. Listens with your ears fools not with your P.C.

  • Puedes escucha mi version en directo en mi canal.

    Gracias

You can take a listen to my live version, visit my profile.

    Thanks

  • FA-BU-LEUX!

  • dites le alors sur mn site

  • so stunning!what a voice!what a solo!!what an artist!!it touches deep down in my soul!!

  • good stuff

  • I don't know of a musician that doesn't play better sober. If he was good when on heroin, he would be that much better off drugs. What a shame . . . what a loss.

  • What an inspired trumpet solo ....!

  • Just incredible..c magnifique

  • Maravilhoso!

  • What class what style.

  • Ho la pelle d'oca.. Great, that's music for ever.

  • I don't have words

  • queria um video dele tocando essa na decada de 50...alguem indica?

  • thanks for sharing.

  • God Damn even at this state of his life he can still rip ppl apart with those runs and smooth ass trumpet licks. He is one of the greats in my eyes.

  • Sensacional! Imperdível!

  • This is heartbreaking. He was such a talent, but heroin just... well it ruined him. A true tragedy, He was so beautiful, his voice was divine. This is just.. horrible to see.

  • Maybe heroin was necessary to his music

  • Maybe, if it's the only tool in your tool box.

  • probably not. Chet is a prime example of how many artistss escape the world they live in, simply because they are so open, so naive, so in love with every moment they pass in wonder, it hurts like nothing else to actually have to live. Heroin was probably not necessary for his music, but for him not to crumble every second in his life.

  • well said. thank you. : (

  • Don't look , LISTEN ! His voice maybe wasn't just as good as when he was young , but he still had great phrasing , and somehow it still worked ; but listen to his trumpet solos , they were even better than the ones his first recordings ! And his scat was great !

  • Heroin ruins many lives, and takes away amazing musicians...

  • Not just heroin, al kinds of druggs

  • @Prematory1 weed doesn't ruin any lives

  • EL MAESTRO DEL JAZZ...

  • ...no more such music...... come back!

  • Riesce ad esprimere un sentimento altro dal dolore, o la gioia, o la tristezza, o la notte, o il sole...

  • Too bad it jumps over the end of the piano-solo at 08:19 (maybe a bass-solo is lost too?). Or should I say; too bad youtube have a 10 min limit on videos ...?

  • such talent wasted on drugs.

    it's such a shame :(

We lost him wayy before we should have/

  • it's not that simple! could be also the source of his inspiration/sensibility...

  • I agree the chet we know was the chet on heroin...

  • A subtle and complex expression, cool and poignant..

    Classic.

  • Great artist incerible life style

  • quel bonheur!merci chet!!

  • This is how God intended jazz to sound...

  • do y'all realize how incredibly difficult it is to play the horn much less play it like chet baker!

  • can i find this version in audio?

  • yes. "....in tokyo" (on cduniversedotcom or google)

  • Chet does My Funny Valentine the best.

So glad to see Chet back on youtube!

  • The best. To bad hel's gone!

  • What a superb artist Chet Baker was! Amazing! Amazing! Thank-you Vladimir for putting this on youtube.

  • Legend.

  • So beautiful it hurts, indeed!

    OBRIGADA

    ;-)

  • A hugely talented junkie. Wonderful music.

  • Sad but true.

  • god bless you in heaven chet! Art can hurt sooooo beautifully!!!

  • like others, for sure the sadness kills him, imagine they kicked his teeth out and he had to learn to play with artifical teeth

  • It's amazing how such beauty can spring from such tragedy and hard times, and Chet certainly knew both.

  • Maybe the sadness of life killed him . . . and that's why he jumped from the window. His music has tragedy in it.

  • I can listen this song all day long. It's Just amazing. Thanks for posting.

  • i am completely floored. thanks.

  • Thanks for posting

  • Me saco el sombrero. Un artista de verdad. Que expresion!

  • This is so Tragic, yet he's never recieved his due. Someday, the masses will real-eyes!

  • i dunno man i love the album version of this so much and in this hes so old and hes been hru so much that its maybe even better in some ways

  • wow...

  • Vladimirsmartins: ¡ thanks a lot!

    Regards.

  • This is as good as it gets. Thanks Vladimir for posting it. Have been looking for this one!

  • he sings like a trumpet!!

  • hits the nail on the head--one of those singers whose voices are truly instrumental--hear it in the pitch, tempo, phrasing--truly exceptional--essence of jazz

  • formidabel! (dutch for fantastic)

  • What a great talent. I am very thankful you shared this video. This is truly a performance I feel priveleged to have seen. Thanks again Vladimirs.

  • Great feeling

  • this performance is unbelievable, is it possible to buy this recording on cd or lp or is just available on dvd?

by the way, what happens at 8:18 ? It seems to just cut from the piano solo to the ending.

  • I think it was only released on laserdisc. Youtube doesn't allow videos with more than 10 minutes and the performance is longer, so I had to do a cut.

  • incredible inspiration from deep of a stormy soul.chet you will live for ever and ever in our hearts.thanks for post this magic moments for us
