There was no more complete jazz musician than Chet when he first appeared on the scene - They called him the Male Elizabeth Taylor - he was so handsome. He played by ear. I think the jury is still out regarding drugs and art. The combination produced too much greatness for us not to stop and wonder. I've known too many artists who confessed to doing their best work while drugged (especially on alcohol) for me to pass judgement. Chet was the greatest, but he died violently as he lived.
Thinking of all the amazing trumpet players that one could attempt to emulate, (Dizzy, Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, Wynton, etc), I wish I could do what Chet does. His solos are often better and almost always more beautiful than the actual melody of the songs he plays over. When he picked up the horn to play, he gave the impression he could solo all day on the changes, and that nothing except pure cool would come out of the bell. I miss you Chet Baker.
If you like the music of today and have never heard of Chet Baker, buy or rent or find out when the documentary on this true "genius" of the music world is and was. The documentary is so terrific and also very funny and gets into this man's head with such great film clips and live performances. You will want to own it, so go to Google and order it.
Chet Baker lived much longer than quite a few of his contemporaries. The only reason people waste so much time discussing his addictions is because he deteriorated so greatly aesthetically. He was brilliant regardless, let it be.
it's tragic that heroin had to get in the way of this beautiful man's extraordinary talent. Heck you can see the weariness in his eyes. And just a little info on this whole "drugs" thing, most jazz musicians in the 40's 50's and 60's used HEROIN. Just to inform the uninformed.
In past 7 months I heard this amazingly touching performance more than 50 times and never enough CHET BAKERs tragic life imbedded into. Hearing more he becomes my favorite, not so funny but sad Valentine. Amazing and old style Jazz in its best.
Its too bad, his voice wasn't as beautiful as it was when he was young.
My opnion on the drugs, it was a stupid choice, there are apologists out there who think it was necessary for some reason or another, but nobody needs to escape from their own life, least of all with susbstances that slowly destroy your mind. People who think they NEED drugs are addicts.
My God, I miss this man and his music. You people listening to Kenny G, thinking you are listening to jazz, need another think - THIS is jazz at its finest. This is what jazz really IS.
So smooth, cool and mellow. My favorite song since the early 50's. I always thought The Chairman of the Board Sinatra sang this great but Chet tops him.
Like one commentator said this melts your heart. What more can I say this version is "outstanding".
@Canaanalbright You never co-exist with a drug, it takes the starring role, eventually , out of spite, murdering you, as the jealousy that existed the moment you met, takes it revenge by removing what's left.
I'm about to cry watching this. His version of this song has always melted my heart to a big ol' puddle. I've never heard it live before. His voice was so smooth and lovely and soothing...<3
Weak?....impaired?....foolishness¡¡¡. He was simply an outstanding performer, maybe one of the best ever. Just listen. in any case unfortunately this performance in not complete.
I don't think many people here realize that this represents the absolute best late-period Chet, only because he had to stay clean in Tokyo (well, he was still on methadone maintenance) due to Japan's strict enforcement of drug laws. He simply couldn't get high like he could in Europe or NY.
As a result, his performance level rises above the usual train-wreck quality he was know for in the 80s. The trumpet work here may be his best ever.
I think it's because of dope that Chet is where he is today.. Yes, dope is not so good for your health, but oh the inspiration and creativity you gain when you're high!
Most musos, actors, artists, we don't use drugs for recreation, as much as for escape from our own minds, and our own grandour. Our own need to obtain perfection. It's a thumb to suck on.
Chet Baker Brings IT every time!!! He's moved me more than any artist ever. They say, a singer can't sing it with their hart , if they haven't had it OR been there! You hear it in his voice and you can see it in the deep lines all over his face... he'll always move me like none other.... Chet Rules!!
His shell of a man is more than most men ever become. You should be so fortunate to produce such perfection in your own chosen field. I know I'm not there yet.
Artistry transcends mere drugs. Michael Jackson was bigger than aspirin just like Chet Baker was much bigger than heroin. Listens with your ears fools not with your P.C.
I don't know of a musician that doesn't play better sober. If he was good when on heroin, he would be that much better off drugs. What a shame . . . what a loss.
This is heartbreaking. He was such a talent, but heroin just... well it ruined him. A true tragedy, He was so beautiful, his voice was divine. This is just.. horrible to see.
probably not. Chet is a prime example of how many artistss escape the world they live in, simply because they are so open, so naive, so in love with every moment they pass in wonder, it hurts like nothing else to actually have to live. Heroin was probably not necessary for his music, but for him not to crumble every second in his life.
Don't look , LISTEN ! His voice maybe wasn't just as good as when he was young , but he still had great phrasing , and somehow it still worked ; but listen to his trumpet solos , they were even better than the ones his first recordings ! And his scat was great !
