HE WAS A GENIOUS ON THE BALL!! The best player I have ever witnessed, playing for Liverpool FC or any other club for that matter. Far and away he was outstanding and would have tore Europe apart had Liverpool been involved at that time. If he was at his height now, I believe he would have definately been the first player to smash the one hundred million pound mark, he was THAT GOOD!!! The balance of a dancer. The strength that comes from dedicated training. Effortless pace and a football brain to give him that extra split second of time. Wonderful close skills and a clinical accuracy to his passing/shooting. John is one of the best wingers I've seen in nearly fifty years of watching, he was far and away the best player in the country in the late eighties, unstoppable and so exciting.

I was on the Kop for a derby game where a big group of Evertonians were in the Kop and threw hundreds of bananas at John Barnes. The atmosphere was explosive, but John Barnes was calm as anything and just picked up a banana and ate it. A legend.
