  • What television show was this performance originally on?

  • This oh so brief recording is the closest we will ever come to hearing angels on earth.

  • This woman had a really angelic voice..!

  • The beautiful, haunting, Joan Baez.

  • by far my favourite version of this song, so frustrating i cant find the full version. :(

  • @ShayleenKacieMajeau I know, you should let me know if you ever find it

  • I have read some comments. Divorce. Ill feelings. Anger. Why, oh why, can we not just watch and listen to a sweet young girl sing and sing about this man called Jesus who she wishes to call her Saviour. I suppose that He sent His Son because He knew there would be many who have many personal problems and such. I pray for all who have a sad or contrite heart. I am truly sorry for them. I wish I could help them feel the joy I feel when I see and hear this. Love

  • Wow, I saw No Direction Home when it came out...and ever since then I've remembered this gem :) Thanks for posting, it's an absolute pleasure to hear it again :)

  • You can find the sheet music at her book, along with many other folk songs on how bad are men.

  • this song gives me goosebumps.

  • dylan and baez should hook up again. <3

  • Oh, I think I'll call Him Savior

Oh, I think I'll call Him Savior,

Glory be to the new born King".

  • @calloway7000.....Uhhh.....well then that makes everything alright for some :)

  • @700moby :)))))

  • @calloway7000 Well now WHO seems to be the angry one NOW :) ??? Take a good look at yourself in the mirror thou hypocrite. Never actually been dumped in my life or divorced and my taste in men is much better than that. I will tell you what I suspect, is that you are in the same class as Dylan himself else you would not defend him so vehemently. A lowlife of some kind who bleeds other people of their strength.

  • @700moby....Joan herself has at best said things about him being his own worst enemy, dark and forbodden, haunted, tormented, void of emotion. If you want to live in your manufactured bubble with Dylan then see if I really care but do NOT lecture me in how I should view him. YOU need to grow up and face facts on the character of Dylan.

  • @700moby .... I base my opinion of Dylan on no one thing but on the personal accounts of MANY people over the years including Baez. I have in fact NEVER heard anyone ever say that Dylan has a nice character or is a decent guy. Nay. They do not because they cannot. At best they go silent and choose to divert attention toward his creative abilities. No one has ever said he was a loving father or a caring husband or a caring son or anything like that. Not even remotely. They find him despicable:(

  • Comment removed

  • @700moby Yeah....sure...whatever you say. I strongly disgree however. Dyland has always been a narcisssistic sociopath who could rhyme but could not sing...leaving a trail of foolish and broken hearted people behind him. Sad but true. He even walked over the old couple that took him under their wing in the early days when he was struggling to start out. Nay, Dylan has never been a beautiful person. Joan yes.

  • i really need to watch no direction home!

  • @yellowpowerranger94 see: Os velhos da montanha

  • Very special sound in this sound clip no other is the same. The sound of guitar and her voice a different feeling from any other Joan Baez song. Thank you Joan :)

  • Comment removed

  • No she did not need any singing partner and certainly not someone like you Bob who cannot even sing :)) Joan never had very good taste in men unfortunately but you were the worst of all. Ugg. Anyone have her singing this song without his interruptions?

  • @ashirly his interuptions are due to this clip being used in his documentary...and without him talking over part of it you wouldnt have this clip at all..

  • @prettyX1 ....Bob never created that old clip of her and it is somewhere out there free of other voices and I would love someone to bring it forth to hear in entirety :) That would be fabulous!!!

  • @ashirly i agree that would be awesome, but this is the best we have now and it has come to light from dylan's film.

  • Comment removed

  • @ashirly Anyone have her singing this song without him interrupting? :D

  • In 1987 I met Joan in Houston--at Joan's Hall. She spent about 5 minutes with me signing pictures and answering my questions about Bob. I disagree with her politics, but she seems sincere in her vision to help the world.

  • a needed addition to the archives- thnx

  • I'd love to hear Joan's recording of the whole song again. I learned it first from Carolyn Hester, who sings the same tune but slightly different verses. Both she and Joan sing it beautifully.

  • just wonderful

  • ...and the blind kids thought it was Mary Hopkin...

  • I'm not very religeous, but I see something here. Joan actually seems to be in touch with something unseen. Kind of strange and beautiful. Before she was famous Joan once worked for the Perkins Institute for the Blind in Watertown MA. She would sing the blind and deaf kids to sleep at night. The deaf kids could feel the vibrations of her voice.

  • This version is so amazing!!!!!! What I would give to get my hands on this. I think everyone here would like that too.

  • @cchheellss83 i dont know where to find it

    looked for it though

  • There's a lot of questions on where to get this song. Let me remind You of the fact that Joan has recorded this song several times and there is quite big differences between the versions. This version is probably the best version but have good competition with the version on the early LP Folksingers 'Round Harvard Square,1959. These two versions are by far better then the others I've heard. I really wish I'll could get this whole version from the Dylan movie.

    Anybody who knows????????????

  • @petterqui The best version is the live one at the Newport folk Festival 1959 in duet with Bob Gibson.

  • @Babyblue177 wow same comment different video nice one babe

  • @mynillywita9milli I was replying to "petterqui" who is not on this page... I don't know anymore what I was replying to :-) If I could, I would give the live version of this song. Unfortunately I can't, I have the old vinyl but not the software to convert into mp3.

  • Although i have seen a longer version of this clip of joan, a documentary about american folk music, on bbc4 one night in the uk

  • No Direction Home

  • I wish someone had the full clip without Dylan talking over it

  • yeah dylan is so rude to just speak throughout her performane like that. he thinks he;s better then anyone

  • @555Fiver555 this is a segment from No Direction Home, documentary by M Scorsese, on Bob Dylan's uprise and touring during 1961-1966. J Baez was actually very important part of those times of protest and as a representative of folk music, quite an influence on BD, so yeah he has the right to talk about her, on a film that is about his great impact on music, as well as one of the greatest moments in rock history (booing him and the pick up band, newport festival)

  • @bollocksnlilies yeh but not wile shes performing.

  • @555Fiver555 I dont know if you understand this, this is a video of her performance,

he just talked to the person that was taking his interview, as he did during videos played with other people's performances. (saving time, directing...) if u think it s that rude okay.

  • @555Fiver555 Lol well, this clip is from No Direction Home.... It's a documentary ABOUT Bob. But he had no part in the editing of it, it was made by award-winning filmmaker Martin Scorcese, the director of Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, etc.... Scorcese juxtaposed Bob's raving about how great Joan was during his interviews after Joan's beautiful performance here to emphasize her influence on Bob....... Don't reply, you won't win

  • @pidgin its from a film called no direction home, its amazing i truley recomend it

  • I just watch this song over and over again because it's so beautiful..almost hard to believe that she never took singing lessons..

this is hauntingly beautiful and makes all the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end..someone ought to make a DVD of Joan Baez in concert -clips of all her live performances..I'd buy it! Probably wouldn't be able to stop watching it.. she's otherworldly, haunting..and the voice...? like a ghost moaning in the forest (in a good way..)

  • The purest, purest of all voices, soaring soprano, cyrstal clear folk voice. Hard to believe someone is born with a voice like this. All these years, I have been a hugh fan & still in awe of her voice. A voice that is so beautiful, beyond words.Every folk club, open mike I go to I am always hoping to discover someone with even a slight resemblence to Joan's voice. I have been to folk clubs everywhere. I hear a LOT of female folk artists singing but never hear one even remotely like Joan Baez..

  • good guitar playing

  • i saw a very brief clip of this song on a documentary about folk music, and it was so beautiful it made me tremble lol. spend the last half hour searching for it and so happy i found it.

  • what documuntary?

  • @hahahahahahahNO How Sweet The Sound

  • documentary **

  • This song has consumed me!!!!

    This is hanting

  • ghostly and beautiful

  • Sometimes I just watch this over and over. I love her voice.

  • nvm. i thought it was the whole song

  • IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS EVERYWHERE!

i first saw it on one of the clips from no direction home and ever since then i've been wondering where i could find it.

    thank you!!

  • same here! I have no been able to find it, because its a cover and isn't on any of her albums I think.

  • I'm the same, rented 'No Direction Home' a few weeks ago from my college library and I have been looking for this song since!! Her voice just struck me as being so clear and strong when if first her sing. How refreshing from all the warblers we hear nowadays!!

  • the burning question i always wanted to ask is " How the Hell can the virgin have a child !!! "

    the mind boggles $%$^^&^^%&^&%

  • I kind of like it with Bob's voice in the background. they're both so talented. Personally I'm more of a Joni Mitchell fan but Joan's voice is undoubtedly haunting (in a good way!)

  • one of a kind!

  • she can be very annoying but its a good clip.

    crayon angels the job.

  • What do you mean she can be annoying? You've met her?

  • yeah, know what she probably says about you?

    "who?"

  • she probably doesnt say anything about me.

what does she say about you?

  • Joan: "that dude MisterCleopatra was taking to on Youtube is a real douchebag"

  • Hihihihi

  • This is fantastic.

  • i want the whole version, it sends chills down my spine

  • gives e chills too. i hope i can find the whole version somewhere. been trying for a while

  • this is gorgeous, her voice is so haunting and this song is perfect for it

  • sounds precious. like an old music box you just found buried in the attic. timeless.. and beautiful. i know it's just the quality of the camera, but the white dress on the black background makes her look like she's glowing. :)

  • Does anyone know the origins of this song? I'm interested in the writer.

  • Love hearing their two voices, Bob's way about and Joan's singing. Remarkable song too.

  • I just heard the first 20 seconds of this Video...and I knew I was listening to something very, very special. It haunts me.

  • Hail Mary +++

  • joan baez, she was staggering. kind of like, hit my world from a different angle... i love this video

  • the version i only found is significantly different from this version. Prolly they never recorded this version. or anything like this.

  • Can someone write down what Bob Dylan says?PLEASE...

  • i wish i could get this entire song, without dylan's comments..

  • "joan baez, she was staggering. kind of like, hit my world from a different angle." .. i think that's how everyone feels upon first hearing her voice. then they proceed to fall in love with her.

  • where can one get the Mp3 for this song, it's lovely

  • u can use flv2mp3 dot com

  • or..you could just buy the cd...

  • what cd is it on?

  • Noel. It's a christmas album. but like pylinth said it sounds different than this version. i really wish they had a recording of this song. her vocals are so amazing.

  • She also sings a more swinging gospel version the 1959 Newport Folk Festival Soundtrack. (duet with Bob Gibson)

  • No, it's not on that album.

  • Diamonds - the best of vanguard years, I bought it on e-bay:)

  • yes, I`m aware of that...

  • Im in love with joans voice.just in love...

  • whats this from?

  • No Direction Home. as a matter of fact, you can find the whole thing on youtube. its on the 6th part. you should watch it. its about bob dylan.

  • i cannot watch this clip enough.

    her voice is flawless. perfect.

  • Stunning says it all... amazing talent, Bob was in love with her and envious of the talent.

  • Stunning.

  • She has the voice of the very ministry of heaven.

  • did she ever put this on a CD anywhere? I love her other songs a whole lot but for some reason this performance just completely blew me away differently than all her other ones

  • You can find this song on "Diamonds - The Best of teh Vanguard Years" Vanguard 1991), A Folksinger's Christmas (Vanguard 1980), Folk Festival at Newport, Vol. 2 (VANGUARD)...

  • thanks, I really appreciate it.

  • you can also find it on the Vanguard re-issue of "Noel"

  • I've been looking for this! Thankyou

  • Stunning. And to think of all the world-class singers who train for years, and still can't touch that young, totally untrained voice, tone and natural delivery.

  • what's the name of this song?

  • This was from a CBS folk music special. It was, most likely, MS Baez' first or second TV appearance.

  • this is amazing...does anyone know what year it was filmed? (the part with Joan Baez singing, not Bob Dylan's comments.)

  • probably 60/61, before he met her and might have seen her on TV. Plus her bangs were gone by the 1961 lp: Joan Baez Vol 2.

  • a christmas vision of an earth angel
