  • L wish Sammy Chullag could see this! He's just crazy about this singer! awesome!!!

  • awesome jam

  • I just love listening to country and "The Hag"

  • A #1 hit for Merle Haggard on the Country & Western charts. It was the 123rd #1 C&W song of the Rock Era. And it was at this time that my education began (kindergarden).

  • I also live by this everyday i know what you are saying rc6646

  • i like dis song very much because of its message,,,,,especially now a days

  • i feel for this song

  • todays music is just 1 word they repeat 100times.

merle haggard is on of the most inspiring music artists in the world.

  • I've listened to Merle, Johnny, Mel, Willie, Kris and that was YEARS ago. These songs make my cry just because I remember 'em when they were first recorded....and now I'm just an old bastard with a head full of country music memories....Beanicus

  • The first time Merle Haggard met Johnny Cash professionally, he said "Mr. Cash I remember your performance in 1959 at San Quentin", Johnny replied "I don't remember you on stage" he said "I was in the audience". Merle asked Johnny if he thought he should keep his record a secret, Johnny said no, and along came this song, full of personal emotion! Take a good listen Nashville, from the most decorated artist ever in country music!! COUNTRY MUSIC THE WAY IT WAS MEANT TO BE!!!!

  • Feel the "soul" in this song. You don't hear it in today's country music.

  • awesome

  • Merle, thank you for this anthem for all of us left out in the cold by the bureau of prisons. a felony tattoo won't go away and a job is a dream...we will never achieve.

A college-educated, white guy outside the USA

  • i have always loved oklahoma that is why it hurt me so much to say what i did please see msbones1950 a waiting grave

  • As a fellow Okie, and to my grandfather who still resides near Altus, I tribute this video.

    Oklahoma pride will never die!

  • @hayesman76 I apreciate you sir. A Yankee who is compasionate to southern folk. I love the south, and givin the chance, would die for it. You are a good man to think about others, instead yourself. Bravo to you sir!!!

  • Theres only one way to truly know what hes talkin about. you might think you know or would like to think you knew what merle was talkin about but its not the same

  • Remember when it was a shameful thing to have been in jail- when did it change?

  • The NWO never forgets on this prison planet. One should not make machines n the image of a mans mind.

  • Amen brother, thanks.

  • I love this song....always have since i was a kid,,, my mum and dads song,,,mums been gone for 18 yrs this yr,,,when i hear this song ,,it always reminds me of her,,,,miss u mum xxxxxxx

  • I'm feeling the same way. I may not have done what Merle has done, but sometimes I feel the same way if I've done something wrong or sometimes when my friends don't talk to me as much.

No one is ever satisfied these days.

  • I know exactly what Merle is singing about. I'm living it!

  • @rc6646 yeah funny eh.., u walk out but your still that guy who's been in jail.

  • @rc6646 ditto

  • From a Louisiana boy living in deep Alabama I would just like to say thanks to tripleheshy.

  • If you dislike this song, you've never done any wrong in life.

  • i love this song but what in the hell is a branded man??

  • @Vean66 it's sorta like the brand is his number as a prisoner and he'll always be looked down upon because of it. that's what i think anyways

  • @Vean66 branded man = ex-con

  • i can relate

  • Thanks.....

  • Hee Haw the good ole days

jerks who make fun of it the real clowns,,,,

  • Now *that's* country. It doesn't get any better than Merle Haggard and The Bakersfield Sound (as long as you don't have to actually live in Bakersfield.) Props to Buck Owens!

  • fabulous song by one of the best True Country good old days present so called country garbage....

  • there is no country music these days it s all contry pop and country rock sad but true

  • I can only wish i was around in the hayday of all th greats. The sound ,the lyrics, and the voices of not only Merle but,of many other "Great" talents "To this day"ring loud in the ears of a young generation.

  • Real music is exactly that... real. It comes from the heart, the soul. It need not be over-complicated, full of fancy language. This song is a perfect example. I love Merle.

  • Since he's just lip-syncing, the uploader should have laid a clean CD track over this footage. That would have been neat. The sound here stinks.

  • i guess we should hate jonny cash huntersingle.

  • @gunnyrotgut you forgot about hank and george hoss

  • I ve listen to Merle haggard while I was still in the crib . His music is so soothing to the soul . This new stuff is pop country

  • President Reagan pardoned Merle for his past crimes.

  • mearl haggard is one of the greats and cant be compaird to no one if u have to ask who he is you know nothing about county music he tells life as he sees it and lifes real things we all have problems with

  • 2 people must be Prison Guards

  • The great ones are great, because they have a believable voice. It's becoming a very rare thing. Waylon talked about how the bigshots in Nashville sign you because they like what they hear, then the first thing they try to do is change you and put a label on you.

  • WHO THE HELL IS THIS HAGGARD GUY, I NEVER HEAR HIM ON THE RADIO, DID HE LIVE IN SWEDEN - HE SOUNDS NOT TOO POLITICALLY CORRECT - I FEAR HE WILL NEVER MAKE IT IN COUNTRY MUSIC - I SHALL CONSULT BILL ANDERBONE AND ROY ACLUCK TO GET A GOOD IDEA - Y'ALL WATCH HIM, HE MIGHT BE A COMMUNIST!

    LMAO!

  • this is when country music was the best nothing will ever come close to this

  • I like this song, i first heard it when i was in my grade school...

  • What of the best songs from one of the best of all-time. A gem from The Hag!

  • For instince Hank lll has a song called put the dick back in dixie. It's a blue grass roots song saying what we're all saying. Greasers and a lot of punks agree with what you say. We like old cars, guitars, clothes and MUSIC.

  • Country now days isn't country, with a few exceptions. I love Hank lll, which takes after his grandaddy, good 'ol Hank Williams Sr. A love of rockabilly bands like the Paladins, Big Sandy, Social Distortion all base their music from the honky tonk off Waylon, Buck Owens, Hank, Dolly, Wonda Jackson, etc. That's why I lve their stuff too. REAL COUNTRY BACKGROUND, NOT THE CRAP THAT COMES OUTTA NASHVILLE TODAY.

  • @sickboy504 I know what you mean. But take hope - remember the early-mid 80's when we had the resurgence of the real thing thanks to Ricky Scaggs, AlabamaRany Travis, Reeva Mac. etc. It looked like real country had been laid to rest but what a resurrection.

  • I'm a punk rocker who loves honky tonk, blues, jazz, etc. Merle always gives me chills down my spine.

  • i think hes a jew

  • Me too~ I was raised on the weekends up at my grandparents farm ( I'm from North York) in OwenSound...my folks and grandfolks and kin all sat around and watched HeeHaw...great, great memories and beautiful talent...

  • man this song hits home wheres all my convicts that can relate with me! hail Merle!

  • yes yes what tripleheshy said...hitting the nail right on the head!

it was music that was about something real

a bit of reality in each note

hats off to the greats like merle woody sonny all the others

too many to list but never enough!

  • Merle was untouchable at this point in time... damn awesome!! being on "Hee Haw" only adds to it!!!

  • OMG I knew that Marty Stuart stole the idea of this song for 'Branded', but I never knew he stole the riff as well! Marty's a thieving bastard! Lol I still love him though. Love the Hag too

  • merle haggard, george jones, and randy travis the 3 best of all time

  • Always a great star, I grew up listening to him

  • bhaha i love how corny this is...makes the lip sinking funny...

  • @dioofotaku i didnt know they lip sinked so well in the 60's....

  • Reagan pardened the Hag.

  • the greast tune everer so f ning true

  • Essa canção sertaneja americana conta o caso de uma pessoa que cumpriu pena , e ao sair da cadeia ainda continuava com o nome sujo e mesmo que ele vivesse 200 anos seu nome aninda estaria ainda sujo .

  • @SuperFoa no savy espaniel

  • THE HAG!!!!!!!!! NUFF SAID

  • I think your fucking ignorant and you need to go to anger management classes!!!!

  • great song

  • This song is nothing but the truth

  • He may have been to prison, he wasn't the only one in this country....but he's certainly cleared his name.

  • He is the one of the greatest country music singers ever was.

  • anyone see the documentary about Hag? I found it very sad come on Hag!! you got a lot more left!!

  • What a voice .What an artiste.Surely one of the greatest. Thanks for sharing.

  • this is *real* country music.

  • countru music is the best ever sang

  • love this song~~~~

good memories at the time this song was on even though was i a kid~~~

    thanks for sharing~~~

  • I used to go see Merle with my Dad . Once back in 1976 when the 1st Live version of

Okie from Muskogee was recorded. when the song starts up, you can hear one quick

Whistle in the live audience, THAT WAS ME and I was 12 years old at the time.

I have been a singer/musician for 30 years now and I have compiled EVERY Merle Haggard song ever written because he is probably the single most greatest influence to the approach I take to the style of vocals I use when performing. MERLE is UNTOUCHABLE

  • @1963CNF

thats fuckin sweet man that was you whistlin.

  • i like this song, this is the only song i can sing along with. i like all of merle haggards songs, this one is my favorite. from, pattyrobertson34

  • boy this takes me back to my childhood days.

  • I miss old country. I love all the old fellas who are keeping real George Jones, Merle Hagard, Randy Travis, Willie Nelson.

  • This is the voice that every singer has been gaged by for almost fifty years. No matter how good a singer was,, it was always asked, " well, is he as good as Merle Haggard?"

  • awsome song

  • oh boy to have these days back again. this is real country

  • @Susieq1247 AMEN !.

  • i feel sorry for people who did not grow up with merle or marty robbins music----no matter how they try - their can never be anyone that can come near their music

  • Wow This Video Was Taken When Hag Was In His Prime. This Is The Man Merle Haggard!!!

  • absolutely the best ever....no one even comes close.

  • lippin his one poor merel he didnt have to lip this they maded him for the looks and the video

  • Poor Merle, in this one.

  • If you donot like Mr.Merle Haggard, you are nothing know about country music,So please shut the fuck up.

  • Pop country music blows. Fuck those faggots in Nashville.... Hank III is one of the only younger ones holding it down these days. Nothing beats Merle, Waylon, Buck, George, Johnny, Hank, And Mr. David Allen Coe

  • @dakataisme

that you even put hank da third in the same class of those men makes me want to slap the shit out of you.

like...right the fuck out of you.

  • No you would be garbage sir. Merle is One of the best there ever has been and ever will be

  • loved merle haggard and still do. thanks for sharing

  • corparate cuntry suxxxx!!!!!!!!!!

  • A True Country Music Icon Forever !

  • Yeah...Merle rulez.....but fuck..... lip synch errrrrr what......It's a bad, bad vid.......I'm embarrassed fo him

  • @WarrenPeece In 1969, it was common to lip synch. Just about every artist did this on televison. Very few if any live music was done.

  • Merle is the greatest! I am 39 and love to hear Merle!

  • COUNTRY MUSIC!!! Nuff' Said!

  • The very first time I heard this song,it was sung by a man who quickly becamemy good friend,TY Vince Lambert and R.I.P my good friend.... The Hag just happens to sing from the heart, and in almost everything he's ever recorded,he seems to sing the story of my life, and that of sooooo many others................

  • Bobbewho 1933.... For many years Merle H, you and George J, have been the glue, holding country music, at an all time high standard Along with Vern G, John C, Keith W, Conway T, keeping country in country, you two are the Greatest...Please, by all means, Continue

  • in his younger days he was the best looking man alive

  • wow what a singer

  • Story of my life....choices have consequences. Merle is a great artist that has drawn on his own experiances.

  • Merle was all real in every song he sang, because he sang the way he lived. Merle, you are one-in-a-million!!!

  • When this was first released, I wore the record out. It didn't fit any precedent for country, let alone any other commercial genre. Nobody has ever done anything at all that fits that unique category that is specifically Merle Haggard.

You'd think some young artist would learn from this...

  • Nothing in country music in today's day and age comes even close to Merle, Buck, Waylon and Dolly. Such a shame really. The greats didn't need overdubbing and a billion retakes to cut an album. Pure talent was all that was needed.

  • you know someone is for real when a live take sounds every bit as good, if not better, than the recorded version.

  • nutsac666, I'd agree, but this was a lip-sync perf for TV. That said, Merle & The Strangers could've handled it live just fine...

  • @Gunnyrotgut You forgot Hank Sr and Hank Jr.....and the rest of the williams family. Yeah it sucks country is what it is today.

  • @Gunnyrotgut What about Hank, Conway, Vern, and Loretta?

  • @Gunnyrotgut I kinda agree with,,however there is one singer of today that will be among the great like this,,George Strait

  • @Gunnyrotgut The worst part is that the talent is out there today, but they can't get on the radio. Nashville shoves all this premanufactured Pop/Country down out throats so they can sell to teenagers. Country music was never meant for kids, it was meant for people that had experienced life's pain and joy.

  • @Gunnyrotgut too true - Semper Fi

  • @Gunnyrotgut Back in the '50s & '60s when Nashville AF of M union rules were strictly enforced, you had 3 hours to do 4 songs. Some producers would pay double scale and do 8 cuts in one session! If you wanted to overdub a guitar, you paid for it. Consequently, musicians got hired and sessions were bigger, with incredible interaction. Now it's evolved to a track-building process and the sponteneity is completely gone.

  • merle, you're the man!!!!!!

  • Besides Lefty Frizzell, the Hag has to be the best country singer of *real country* PERIOD!

  • love the hag

  • ALLEN0955, thanks so much for posting this video, the great Hag.

  • What a storyteller. My friends and I watched Hee Haw when we were young because our parents knew the brilliant talent that appeared on it. I feel so fortunate that I experienced it and am forever indebted to them for exposing us to Merle and others. People are quick to make fun of REAL country artists but they truly tell the tale of America along with the great Blues and Gospel artists this great country produced.

  • you are right pal , keep it on .

  • @tripleheshy well said !

  • @Dutchy1965 Many thanks.

  • @tripleheshy People can make fun of Hee Haw all they want but this NYC born and raised sity clicker still argues that tyhe musical talent which appeared on that show was AWESOME. Jerry Lee Lewis and Merle Haggard? Buck Owens and Roy Clark as regulars? That is top-shelf, son! And it was only many years after the show went off the air that I found out it featured some of the regulars (such as the beloved Grandpa Jones) in a great gospel quartet!

  • @hayesman76 Great post but it is sad to see them still being lampooned today as some backward, jerk water inbreds who can barely pluck a geee-tar as some say. Good to know there's folks like you still around.

  • @tripleheshy I would like to add that I was born and raised in New York City but would NEVER mock Southerners, Okies or country music folks in general. They are some of the finest, friendliest people you'll ever meet and it burns me up every time I see them mocked and made fun of in the media. It seems in this age of sick "political correctness" the media bosses think its fine to denigrate mock Southerners in a way they'd never do to other groups in a million years. (Sorry for the rant!)

  • @hayesman76 So true. It's the last accepted prejudice really.

  • @hayesman76 yes north mocks the south it is cheap!!

  • @hayesman76 Im a southerner and feel the same way about northerners. Met some really cool people all over this country. People that get mocked in south for whatever reason. Ignorance i suppose. In all my travels I've noticed, most people in most places are mostly the same as me in one way or another.

  • @hayesman76 WELL SAID!

  • @MrSALVATOREPRIANTI Hmmm ... Signore "SALVATOREPRIANTI," huh? You must be another NYC-bred paisano like me, amico! :-) When it takes two Yankee Italians to defend the honor of our great and very talented Southern countrymen I guess it's clear the country needs to shape up! LOL
