Serious shoot match, hitting all-out on most moves though I can't see where this punching contest is anymore "wrestling" than WWE. The most impressive thing is that it probably went an hour to a time limit draw and they were fighting like that the whole time, something you never see anymore. I remember Bull and his son Fred from the 1970s, even got to see Fred in person in my little home town.
@YankeesFlair That I don't know but there was a Bull Curry- Sheik match where Firpo ran in and hit Curry with a chair causing him to lose the no DQ match.
@YankeesFlair , Yes...Curry did fight Firpo. I saw it live at the Akron Armory here in Akron Ohio back in the early '70s. It was a slugfest / bitefest from beginning to end, in-and-out of the ring as you could probably imagine! It lasted probably 12 or 13 minutes total, ending in a double-disqualification.
No, those guys did nothing fancy (to say the least!). But it was a lot more entertaining than watching the pretty boys wrestling has in the ring now.
his matches in the 70's were gruesome. the chump opponent face was so bloody it was dripping on the floor. Of course the chump cut himself but he must have cut too deep. in those days the blood was real. Curry beat the guy's face until his jaw broke. the guy couldn't close his mouth so the ref stopped the match. He didn't really break his jaw but It was great!
@oldschool6804 c'mon dude you gotta use your common sense. Bull Curry punched the guy in the head 200 times during the match. All the punches were fake. If you punch a guy in the face that many times he's dead. Curry was the master of pulling punches. It was gruesome how the blood was dripping on the floor after the chump cut himself. It was great!
@xxxxharp, Fred Curry was his son. I used to watch both of them quite often on Saturday nights in Akron, Ohio at the old national guard armory. What a great place to watch wrestling. Small place with a balcony that went on 3 sides of the ring. It's like you were right on top of the action. Others that worked there often included Johnny Powers, Bulldog Brower, Ernie Ladd, The Shiek, The Love Brothers, and others. What a great time in my life.
Wild Bull Curry made his bones down here in Texas Used to pack the World Famous Sportatorium and the North Side Coliseum every week! He was wild, crazy, out of control and a true wrestling gem!
Remember once when he had a "Texas Death Match" coming up with Fritz Von Erich, and Fritz was the undisputed "Master of the Iron Claw". So Curry "prepped" for the match by parading around with vice grip across his forehead, vowing Fritz would NOT split his skill in two with the Claw!
This is apparently the only footage of Bull that exists on YouTube. Doubtful that Vinnie Mac even has any stuff on him in his archives. You can find photos of him on Yahoo or Google, but that's about it. Or maybe see what George Napolitano, Mike Lano, Frank D'Amato or Tom Burke have of him - probably just pics and no footage but worth a shot.
Gary Hart told a great story about Bull Curry. Bull was a friend of Paul Boesch and he wanted him to wrestle Brusier Brody. Gary warned Boesch that it wasn't a good idea since Brody had beat the shit out of Dick Steinborn in Joe Blanchard's territory and Brody didn't want anyone trying to make him look bad much less a 65 year old man. Gary had to convince Brody not to stiff Bull Curry because Boesch threatened to fire Gary as his matchmaker and cut relations with World Class.
As I've often said, and again bears repeating, this was when wrestling was WRESTLING! Now if anyone could post any footage of Bull Curry v. The Sheik, that would be way cool!
@hcjc57 My dad was a professional wrestler and wrestled Curry many times. He was an extremely nice guy but scared me to death when Dad would take back into the dressing room.
@david24262 My Dad's name was Ellis Bashara. He wrestled professionally for 21-years. He played football and was on the wrestling team at the University of Oklahoma. His home was Houston, TX. He also wrestled as Murzuk Muratt while in California and for some period of time in a mask as The Purple Flash. Here is a YouTube video that was aired on PBS about four years ago about a war time event held in Houston in 1944. One YouTube video about him. It was a PBS broadcast about Houston.
@hcjc57 I remember a great TV interview of Bull Curry in the late 60's from Detroit, in which Bull challenged the Weasel (the Shiek's manager) "why don't you take off that mask (referring to his sunglasses) so people can see how you look." My friends and I quoted that line incessantly.
Bull Curry was the man. He was a one m an ECW before anyone thought of the concept. Use to tear it up at the old Cleveland Arena downtown.
Back in the 70's I managed a band called Labrynth. We were all wrestling fans. One of the originals was "The Bull Curry Boogie, Pts. 1 & 2." Alas, the band never got around to recording that one.
Wow, a Wild Bull Curry clip! Thanks for posting, he was one of my favorites back in the '70s. The fights he had with Pampero Firpo were insane! Any more of Curry would be great!
I did see Bull Curry Return To Atlantic Grand Prix For a Very Short Time in the Maratime provinces I beleive in '82,by this time he was a Baby,& He kick the piss outa Archie Gouldie & Killer Karl Krupp,I was astonished at his eye brows,& his promo Photo I still have looked like a cover for an Inmate at Alcatraz,.Very tall, well mannered,.The other opponent "Ovila"looks an awfull like "Killer"Kowalski!
I saw Bull wrestling in Detroit in the 1970s. This man had a true presence. He could scare the hell out of you just by staring. He and his son Fred were two of my favorite wrestlers. Seeing Bull battle the Sheik was one hell of a battle on Saturday nights at the air-conditioned Cobo Arena. Thanks for the wonderful post. Thanks for the memories Bull. RIP.
@terrykozak I also one of the Shiek vs Wild Bull Curry matches. Unfortunately they battled outside the ring, so no winner was declared. Curry vs. Firpo was great too!
