  • i have an m-audio fast track pro, which has midi and 2 outputs

  • i brought a saffire 6 because of this :D

  • i made 3 accounts and subscribed 2 u with each 1

  • I really want a cheese and pickle sandwich now....

  • @wwwboyinabandcom what if you have a mixer that provides phantom power and a usb connection, do you need a sound card?

  • Learned a lot guys.....thanks

  • gotta love this kieran guy :)

  • I am thinking of buying a soundcard, but I know in my heart that I will never sing, nor buy a microphone. I don't own or plan to buy a guitar anytime soon, and the only device I have is a midicontroller. Hence, all the outputs the Saffire offers are of no real purpose to me. However, I do need a better soundcard, as currently I experience a delay on my midicontroller(I've heard getting a soundcard helps this) and at times some "sparks."

What soundcard would you recommend for me?

  • the picture for the fast track 2 is wrong

  • The drum n bass 7 day song is in this video ;)

  • @Bendy2K Yeh, clipsafe looks really handy, but I noticed the unit only has USB out to computer, has this given you any troubles with latency? I used to get so pissed off with my old Mbox because of this. I had to get a FireWire version to minimize the delay. Oh, and thanks for the reply:)

  • love the vids but the background + color is horrible! haha

  • 500 = American dolars?

  • @KEVIN0EL0DESTROYER 500 British Pounds... roughly 700 USD

  • @KEVIN0EL0DESTROYER 789.75 USD to be exact.

  • @wwwboyinabandcom you are awesome mate!

  • newbie question: is this kind of sound card absolutely needed? can't you just connect the mic or midi controller through the computer's usb ports and just use them?

  • @BX5BT Yes and No. Once you have a good computer, make an interface your very next purchase. You can have a $1000 mic but it'll sound like crap if you do what you're saying. It's better to get the most out of a cheaper mic. However, If you have a destitute-tier setup (cheap/old computer, cheap computer speakers or headphones, cheap mic, free daw) don't make equipment an excuse for not producing, keep rocking. Nothing is "absolutely needed."

  • bwahahaha xDDDD 0:18

  • lasooooos as aposed to the american LASS-OH

  • Just noticed, cause I'm an anally retentive twat. Buuut Kieran just wanted a cheese sandwich. His sandwich wasn't cheese. Mhmm.

  • dude you should voice over commercials

  • YOUR VOICE IS SO FUCKING ANNOYING!!!

  • Dave, you and BIAB have gone from stength to strength. You've helped so many people, myself included. Even your jokes are getting better!

Yet another great video - thanks man. :)

  • Love your work Dave!! ;) just wondering if anyone's tried out the propellerhead "Ballance" kit yet? I want to get the free upgrade to reason 6 and thought it might be worth a try.... Any one?

  • @MegaBenjin I own one. I haven't had any other soundcard before it, and so I have nothing to compare it to but it does sounds great, has two inputs for guitars, two microphones (via XLR) and four other quarter inch inputs for other things. It can only handle two inputs at any one time, but it's very easy to switch between inputs via the pretty buttons on the front. It also has lots of other gloss for Reason, including a tuner and "clip safe" - look that one up. It also looks great on the desk!

  • Since I already have a Midi-Usb cable for my keyboard, and I would only need the card to record vocals, and maybe some acoustic guitars, do you think that I should buy that M-Audio card ?

  • only thing is you showed a picture of an maudio fast track ultra when you were talking about the fast track 2. The Ultra can be had for around £150 second hand, has 8ins/8outs, 4mic/jack ins, midi, usb2.0, DSP and two headphone mixes. This would be a massively better choice than the focusrite.

  • thats a really big cookie <3

  • lolz, i just had to be the first disliker.

i liked it but i also liked to touch the dislike button, which i like but i also like the like button but liking both is hard so i'd like to like to chose which was the dislike becouse i'd like to be the first disliker.

LIKE THIS LIKE A LIKING BOSS

  • WHERE IS THE KISSING PART?!!!?!

  • Cakewalk's UA-25EX soundcard is a nice soundcard too. That's what i bought, and it has phantom power, it's quite cheap, build-in compresser, two inputs (both XLR and Jack) and it has monitor controller and headphone input. I think it might have all the things that boyinaband recommended. I use reaper as well, and for that i have guitarrig, to mix bass, guitar and even add vocal effects. Guitarrig is really awesome, but cost a few coins though. I have two mic's. And old condenser and a SM58 beta.

  • @TheCountSmith Oh i forgot to say that Reaper is for free as long as you click "STILL EVALUATING". I have been doing that for a couple of years, so no problem there. Reaper is very easy to use, but i still learn new usefull things in the program once in a while. It's really recommendable.

  • 0:18 to 0:22... that was so fucking scary xD

  • I have a question, with the focusrite where should I plug my pc speakers mini jack (I dont have monitors)

  • @bluefAng You can put them in the audio out on your PC soundcard (not the focusright)... this is where you had them plugged in before getting the interface. Then on your audio program you set the output device to be your onboard soundcard not the focusright monitors.

    Hope this helps :)

  • @bluefAng You could get a 1/4 to 1/8 jack adaptor then plug into heaphones. That said you should really save up for some decent studio monitors if you want to do anything to do with music. You can get a few alright ones under 400

  • IT'S DUDE IN A DRAMA :DDD

  • Masticating... good use of vocabulary.

  • I love my NI Komplete Audio 6 :)

  • The UX1 doesn't have Phantom Power. The ux2 does

  • For some reason I've never seen anybody be clear about the main doubt I have on audio interfaces:

What do they do to SOUND QUALITY? (as opposed to plugging directly to the computer)

Are they supposed to reduce noise/hum?

Do you get a broader frequency range or something?

Do they help with crackling/popping? (which as far as I know relate just to processor speed)

*I have one M-Audio Fast Track Pro and can't notice a difference

  • @vitobasso I don't know of many computers that have have 1/4" or XLR inputs on their soundcard unless you bought a separate sound card instead of an integrated one. In which case an audio interface is pointless as that's what it is, a sound card.

  • @vitobasso Also from my experience with plugging my mics directly into my PC, I get a lot of distortion when I record unless it's sing quietly or far away, neither of which are ideal in my opinion.

  • @highestsettings hey, thanks for the response. for the 1/4" you can buy one adapter really cheap. for XLR idk, maybe you're right, I've never recorded from a real mic yet.

about the distortion, usually lowering the record volumes in the OS would fix that for me. not sure if that's your case.

  • @vitobasso Yeah but then it's really quiet in the mix and I have to boost it and that's not entirely ideal either really. You could always use an XLR to 1/4" adapter and then another adapter in the computer :P

  • HAI dude... I was wondering... If I have a M-Audio Synthesizer do you think it would be better to get the M-Audio sound card.... or to go for the better one because it doesnt matter :P

  • Are soundcards really that expensive?

  • does an Axe fx work as a soundcard, interface, etc etc

  • I'm using the Saffire 6 aswell, great interface with a great price/performance ratio! Definitely recommended.

  • 1:23 "...this allows you to power up condense microphones wich we'll talk about in da... LATER"

  • @hamiiDX i believe he actually said "in depth" :)

  • I bought myself a Focusrite Saffire 6 last December after a friend of mine recommended it. It's far better than the old M-Audio Fast track that it replaced. Also, the Focusrite Audio drivers that come with the Saffire 6 are top notch.

  • So funny...

  • What are your thoughts on the Focusrite 2i2?

  • Is Kerian stoned? :D

  • WoW no Dislike!

  • @Xxatwxx10 does it really matter what his sexual preference is? Are you planning on asking him out? If not then it is not your business.

  • @TheTony2313 Besides that hes stated that he has a girlfriend...

  • I watch these for a good laugh lol

  • @xxatwxx10 do you really think that sexual orientation , whatever it is, could somehow modifi the awesomeness and quality of the presented informations?

  • I just bought the Saffire Pro after a lot of searching on the net. I had a gut feeling that it would be really good, and it really is! Im in love with it! Amazing quality, and I can finally start recording bands and start out with music production! :D Great video here! Love your stuff! \m/

  • I followed your "That one" text to like your video. Now food supply is getting low, and I'm still waiting for the video to be played.

  • are you gay o.0

  • Wow! a Saffire Pro 6 USB is what i'm hearing this video through!!! I did good Jobs!!!

  • @JacobCain86 I also have a pair of M-audio B5xa's & an M-audio KeyRig 25... I'm sure the Keyrig 25 will be there in day 5 maybe...

  • Good Video, but you didnt say anything about the asio drivers and the latency which can occur because of the usb interface or bad asio drivers. The latency is very important when you are playing on a usb-midi interface like a keyboard. Thats the reason why i didnt buy a usb sound interface/card.

  • Hahahaha, sound card, amazing!

  • I WANT A COOKIE! :)

  • is fast track 2 better than the orignal, that was so bad quality

  • bees.

  • u da best :D !!!!!!

  • Ive got a fast track usb pro but i cant seem to get it to work with reason

    :(

  • i dont wanna be a knob (guess i am now) but the fast track model you showed is a FAST TRACK ULTRA and not the fast track two. thers a major difference and the ultra is much better than a saffire 6. 6 analog ins/outs balanced two spdif in/outs and TWO headphone outs. i know cos i have one.. good videos though :-D

  • I didn't know you were from the UK until this video! I've checked out your channel before and I swear it said US but guess not. Your're sweet either way!!

  • I use the Tascam US-144MKII. It's really good. lol.

  • These studio videos are amazing, I'm learning while laughing hysterically.

  • anybody have any thoughts on the presonus firepod ? Ive had oen for a few years now and I think it's very solid for the price and for what it offers but do you know of anything that might be better for about the same price of what that was

  • whats your thought on the tascam 1641 interface for recording live drums?

  • I want a cheese sandwich now.

  • Hey dude, please answer me. If I want to buy a compressor rack or some other mastering hardware. How do I connect that to the Audio Interface? And would they connect to the one you mentioned?

  • @eduardo13rocha Be More precise and he'll answer.

  • You know whats awesome. Is this video. I've been doing so much research and actually chose the Focusrite pro 24 dsp. Im so glad you guys mentioned the Focusrite in this video though. Makes me know Im making the right choice!

  • 2:11 wait what do those Gay Knobs do again? haha oh gotta love immaturity

  • thank you for doing this, i was about to buy a usb digital to rca analog interface, a usb splitter and a usb to midi interface, which would drain hella power, and heat my system the hell up, thank you for this video, it'l definantly save me money

  • I didnt think that it would actualy send me to a bee documentary -___-

  • I think Kieran is sooooo hot!!!!

  • what do you think about the ux2 ?

  • lasoooooos lol :)

  • yamaha audiogram 3/6 works really well too

  • Don't forget that if you want cleaner pre's, better AD conversion you will probably need to spend more money on your interface. For more high end interfaces look at apooge if you're on a mac, the motu and rme lines as well. I'm using an apogee duet and it kicks ass!!

  • What about Balance from Propellerheads? It's a bit more expensive up front, but that's because it comes with Reason. I'm curious why you didn't even mention it

  • i've already known about/had all the stuff i need for 2 years but it was still fun to watch the video. u deserve more credit for your work buddy

  • what about the Akai EIE (or EIE Pro)? has 4 inputs,4 outputs, phantom power (+48V), MIDI ports and also acts as a USB hub. $200 USD

  • Are there any benefits of the FocusRite vs. the fast track besides the outputs/MIDI inputs? Is there any noticeable difference in functionality, ease of use, sound card (audio interface) quality?

  • I was only looking to spend £100 on a card , but when I looked into it, the extra for the Focusrite was WELL worth it. Iv had 6 months now and would recommend it to anyone. It feels like it should cost a lot more it very well built, does what it does very well and if you are only looking to spend a £100 pound ....do yourself a favor and spend that little extra its WELL worth it.

  • unless for some reson you are a dj and didnt realize that your dj midi controller is also a sound card, then in that case dont buy another one you already have one.

  • @funkshin Not all of them are like that. Mine is just a controller, nothing more.

  • When I bought my KRK's, the guy in the shop said I'd need a sound card to get the best quality out of them.

    True/False?

  • @WereGlidingWithStyle True....iv had the focusrite for a while now but just got my KRK 6s and its a GREAT combo

  • @WereGlidingWithStyle To a certain point, yes. If you have an interface you're fine. just go from that. It is possible that he was talking about a computer sound card (like the computer part, not the ones described in this video). you'd need one if you were taking the sound directly from your computer.

  • @WereGlidingWithStyle You need an interface, makes a huge difference plus has the right connectors for your monitors. There is a reason why audio interfaces are much better than standard computer sound cards.

  • Funny I am actually watching this just because your videos so darn entertaining! Keep up your English goodness! :D

  • Hey Dave, great videos, I'm actually just in the process of building my home studio, and I need a bit of advice.

I was considering getting an M-Audio Audiophile with a Behringer Xenyx X1204 USB, how do you thing that would do, would you recommend that or getting an USB/Firewire interface like the Focusrite Saffire 6 or an M-Audio Fast Track Ultra ?

  • @MrNarcoleptik I got the focusrite and its very good for the money. Its portable, built like a tank, great for djing with the double outputs and great for the home studio. As Dave said the preamps are amazing, Iv read the pre's are better than some cards that cost over twice as much.....so i bought one and love it.

  • Are there any good internal ones?

  • What do you think about Propellerhead's Balance?

  • my name is kieren and i am as derpy as him xD

  • its the M-Audio fast track pro, not 2, so i think anyway!

  • Focusrite preamps are pretty much unbeatable for value, I use the saffire pro 40 I/O, it is phenominababibble

  • I sure do...haha

Good call on the focusrite. I was looking at the M-Audio when purchasing my first sound card and was recommended the Saffire 6. For the same price (£130 in the right places) it has sooo much more going for it.

  • haha nice firestudio mobile is good 2 exept for the midi input

  • do you owe something to kieran now since he let you rip on him for a good 7 videos?

  • @jbarnett54 I sure do!

  • @wwwboyinabandcom Can I have a hug?

  • @wwwboyinabandcom that's what he said!

  • Are they really that important? I don't use microphones and have one MIDI controller using USB. What advantage will a soundcard give now?

  • @C4pitalise - Are you using Mac or PC? With a PC your DAW will be running your audio through direct X, which can create a lot of latency when using USB devices, (this is considerably more noticeable when recording or playing live).

On a Mac this is not an issue when using core audio as the audio isn't routed through anything else.

However, without an audio interface in either instance, you won't be able to utilise multiple audio outputs or use higher quality microphones

  • @C4pitalise Well, if you ever do decide to record something you will be prepared and if you get some monitors, you will have a nice interface to route them out of (I don't own monitors though, so I am not sure about that, you may need some sort of fancy amp for monitors).

  • I got confused witht the fast track as you showed the top fast track (ultra) rather than the teh fast track 2 and the ultra has 8 outputs :P

  • I recommend the Tascam US-122 mkII. It's really cheap, has a midi in and out and it has great preamps, which is what you pay for in an audio interface really.

  • Focusrite Saffire 6 USB is what I'm considering

  • DO NOT BUY AN M-AUDIO FAST TRACK ULTRA, IT IS GARBAGE

  • What type of input jacks are those on the Focusrite Saffire 6?

  • @zanepepper 3/4" jack and 3-pin XLR, they both work through the two input channels

  • @Cjdunne89 1/4" sorry - That would be one big-ass jack input...

  • @Cjdunne89 Okay, cool, I want one of those and it would have sucked if I had to buy some sort of adapter as well.

  • I'm using the Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 it cost about 120-150 £ and has phantom power. It is 100% usb powerd has 2 mic (dlx?) and 2 Instrument ins (like Guitar) and gain with red yellow and green light (awsome). I'm Really happy with it.I hope my englisch is not to bad.

  • profire 6/10

  • I love how you really emphasised the C in masticate to avoid the obvious confusion ;)

  • The M Audio Fast Track pro has MIDI... lol

  • How do you feel about Propellerhead's 'The Balance' interface??

  • If anyone wants to buy a M Audio Fast Track Pro 2 HMU

  • I sure do...

  • If the MacBook is one of the newer ones it should have Firewire. Apple love it.

  • @tz64nk41 Not for long, now they are pimping the "Thunderbolt" interface.

  • Hey, what are your thoughts on the similarly priced PreSonus audiobox? It has usb 2.2 instead of 1.1, a notably faster bus, and a cool blue finish.

  • I actually love how in 5 minutes and 11 seconds you've tough me more than my college has in one year.

  • what would u guys recommend for an audio interface with atleast 8 ports? (recording drums)

  • @k1dpoison A MIXER

  • @k1dpoison A mixer is a bad idea, because you can't adjust the individual levels after the fact. I have a Saffire PRO 40, it's Firewire not USB, but an amazing interface. It phantom power to all 8 inputs (switchable in 2 banks of 4), but does require an electrical connection to the wall, as that would be too much juice to pull from even a Firewire port.

  • i use the POD UX2, that is the same as ux1 but with phantom power :) and 1 more mic input

  • Thanks so much for the info =] Can't wait to start recording my synthesizers into Ableton ^_^

  • You know the POD UX2 does have phantom IDK about the UX1 though

  • I got my Saffire 6 a couple weeks ago and am very pleased. It was up and running in 30 minutes. Was a definite upgrade from my Behringer UCA202. Makes hooking up my Korg M50 a breeze an runs on Widows 7 flawlessly. I chose this interface factually for the RCA's so I can connect other pieces of gear (DJ mixer, live mixer). Best interface for the price, would recommend over the PreSonus FireBox. Not to mention the free Novation Bass-Station VST is very fun. Great video, thank you very much.

  • While I can appreciate the choice for the Focusrite, it's important to note that the UX2 (not the UX1) has phantom power (though you have to turn it on for both mic inputs at the same time), and that the real value isn't in just the interface - if you're a guitarist, Pod Farm is absolutely awesome.

    Otherwise, good calls all around.

  • I MUCH prefer the Echo Audiofire 2 or 4 because their soundcards are just so much better in terms of quality.

  • whats the track used in the background from 00:55 ?

  • try to get away from promoting the myth that you can only record vocals with condenser microphones.

  • @nooneimportant77 He didn't say you NEED one, just that condensers has a more detailed sound, which they do. What you chose to record with though is entirely depending on the track - if you want gentle and ariy vocals, condenser could be the better choice, while if the vocals are harsher and more powerful then a dynamic might be the way to go. It's all a matter of taste

  • I love you guys!

  • i realy need this info about how to make music at home! at last... INFO!!!! Thank u and we a re waiting other parts future video

  • The only problem with the focusrite is that it's USB 1.1 and not USB 2.0

1.1 is older and in tweak's guide it says it could make some problems. I'd go with the Saffire Pro 14, if you have Firewire

  • Is this the shopping channel?

Machines do not make the heart sing.

  • I just purchased the Focusrite Saffire Pro 14.... It's a firewire 400 cable, and i'd seriously recommend getting it if you wanted even more inputs :) Practically 0 latency and minimum hum :D Good choice Dave!

  • 4:24 dave just got served again. ouch

  • Honestlly this is so so so so helpful thanks Dave you Gringo :P

  • been waiting for this all day! :D

  • I sure do!

  • awesome video!

  • 2:05 Force Fellatio. You're doing it wrong.

  • sixth!

  • First....

  • What do you think about direct USB/instrument cables?

  • Been waiting all day for this to come up. Keep 'em coming!

  • Hooray!

  • 1st
