I actually think this is quite good for a TV movie. I've never confronted the challenge of reading the 1000 page book, so I don't know how this compares but it did scare me as a child and the plot is cohesive.

Today's stuff is rarely this dark or imaginative; it could even be considered unChristian or controversial even if things seem a lot more lax when it comes to sex and violence.
