Regarding his dancing, also remember that his on-stage persona during his "machine period" was of a lonely android. Plus, he was terrified of going on stage so he tried whatever he could to distract himself from the fact that he was in front of thousands of people.
ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR ! ! God I wish I could have seen him back then ! (Except I hadn't even been born !) I've seen him perform this song (one of his best !) a couple of times in the past year in Brighton and it was great, but not quite comparable to this classic vintage performance ! !
@DerVampyrEngel Im a dj & so I have to give real underground hip hop credit for resurrecting & showcasing the obscure & forgotton by sampling their work..
I dont think the industry cares as most of those artists were considered unprofitable at the time & had poor contracts & minor royaties..They probably earn more from sample clearance fees & publishing than limited press re-issues.
Ive had problems with copyright restrictions on youtube uploads so i advise you to also check the blogs..
@tygaelement Yeah I got that sorry for taking so long to reply , well I think Numan must have earnt a lot for his music being sampled( The Sugar Babes"Freak Like Me" for instance and Wu Tang's "Life's a Movie" plus Sir Mix A Lot used to use a lot of Gary's music. Still I doubt record labels and companies get as much demo's sent to them as they used to and yes about the poor contracts Numan had a very crappy contract at the time if you read his Book "Praying to The Aliens"
@tygaelement Yeah but they weren't so dark electronics, more psychedelic and Yes Kraftwerk were amongst them then though more psychedelic s well as John Foxx (Tiger Lily)
@tygaelement No never heard it so I will give it a listen, Yeah Walter (Now Wendy Carlos) soundtrack for "A Clockwork Orange" is one soundtrack, and I know there were was lot of electronic music in Germany in the 60's , not Just Kraftwerk but Tangerine Dream among others then, thats the problem with the music industry, although now with things like youtube a lot of artists that didn't get credited with stuff can put thier music up and eventually be discovered
@tygaelement yeah a lot of artists I think will now be discovered which were not way back when because of youtube, and myspace, whereas before although there was the internet in the 90's there wasn't a central hub to kind of view it all as there is now which must piss of the Music Industry Boss Assholes
@paintedship checked them out they were a very good band, very wierd especailly for those times although I gather pyscodelic rock was big then, check my late girlfird's band out "Blue Anger" She was into a lot of that and was into Captain Beefheart very heavily, her band was from Berlin, she was from Kassel ,Germany
Met Gary at Bristol Hippodrome very much a gentleman and as for the concert was superb! Went backstage and saw all the gadgets absolutley unbelievable!!!!
Still playing Gary even today, my other half like me has always been a big fan... Ive recentley bought dvd of his tour when his first child was born... think that was 2002
@denimdemon9 As a product of the 80s, I can assure you dancing in any new wave club back then consisted of those exact moves. Gary's doing it right...hate the game, not the player...
It's an old analogue polymoog. The sound has never adequately been replicated by modern digital synths. It's why a generation of music lovers fell in love with this sound in the 1980s. The opening bars are from the title track called 'Replicas' - a truly awesome work. There are videos of it on youtube.
The height of genius. If there was a time and we could go back to 1981 and go crazy watching his brilliance on stage again. Haha. That'll be the day. I'd drive up in a convertible and blasting Numan's best on the stereo. Yeah!
Today, I probably would be sitting down in the living room with some tea and chatting with him over music theory.
I love the synth'd helicopter blade sound which begins at 0:59 and ends at 1:37 mark (coupled with the looped "rotor style" movenmet of light above and behind the stage). Nice effect at mimicking the high-speed prop of a helicopter's blades. Leave it to Gary to envision using this effect on stage. :)
One of the best intros for sure. Definitely the best work that the Paul Gardiner (RIP) and Cedric Sharpley rhythm section did for Numan around '79. Sampled all over the place down the years to this day and easily as funky as anything guys like Chic were doing around the same time IMO.
Ha, this is from the Micromusic video tape. I taped that same concert from Music Box (I remember Sunie presenting the show) and if I'm not mistaken the V2000 tape is still somewhere in the attic at my parent's house :)
I just love this song and I remember listening to this in the early 80's when I was 12, this and Asylum are the some of the coolest and darkest electronic music ever
fantastic!!! i wish i could see it in perfect sync...his freaked-android dance is so cool in this one!...one of his best songs-i loooove this menacing, spooky ppg´s and moogs on it...the drumbreak is also one of the baddest EVER!!!
Yes this song is very dark & is is the second song I ever heard by Numan after seeing the Cars Music Video back in the early 90's a a young boy. I have been a fanatic ever since has been 5 or 6 years now.
AMAZING! I was 13 when I became a fan in 1979 and I don't know if he ever came to the US with this tour. It must have been an incredible thing to experience. I saw him live for the first time recently with the Jagged tour and I was up close -so intimate- so that was fantastic for me! Gary is such a great performer with or without a huge set.
I would have loved to have seen this live...Original, innovative, brilliant. Gary is the Father of the keyboard..( Mini Moogs..Baby!)

@DerVampyrEngel have you heard silver apples - lovefingers ? Its incredible.
There's also a lot of dark electronica in film library music & italian soundtracks which went against the swingin hippy 60s spirit ..
it's unfortunate that most of it is uncredited.
