Very nice tutorial , i have a question though. How do you deal with close range targets? because they don't show up on radar to me (or maybe i just don't know how to adjust it). For Vertical scan and boresight you have to actually see the target but what if i can't see it ? Thanks in advance.
@klinci33 Yes, this is tricky for all pilots, including myself. The problem with scanning for targets at close range is that the scan cone of your radar scans a much smaller area, and thus, if the target is significantly higher or lower than you, you aren't going to see time at close range unless you really work the radar elevation up and down.
The trick is to not let this happen to you. Lock him at long range and if he gets close, keep an eye out for him.
@JediLink25 Alright, thanks for the tips :). It's just that i get killed really fast when i get closer to bogeys and it bugs me because i don't know from where i'm being fired upon.
Aren't their easier methods for close air combat? I remember there being a short range combat mode on the APG. Detection range is terrible, nonexistant past 4-5 miles but it covers practically the entire front half of the F-15.
The main problem I usually have is accidentally locking on to friendlies that get in the way before locking onto the enemy contacts I'm trying to splash.
Why doesn't the fire control computer disregard friendly FF contacts?

God damn it Aero, I love your tutorials! Are you going to make a F-15 Navigation tutorial? Also, thanks to your tutorials on the Su-27, I think I'm gonna do well when I finally install Lock on FC2 :P. I'm gonna start out slow, baby steps, figure out the manual way to start the plane, and practice taxing on on the ground before I even begin to fly! You can manually start the plane, can you? I don't like using hot keys :/.
@JizzTechCo Not sure if I'll do an F-15 nav tutorial, but there will be an F-15 and Su-27 ILS heads down landing for sure.
Unfortunately, there is no manual startup for the aircraft in lockon. However, if this kind of detail is your thing, be sure to checkout DCS Blackshark and the up-coming DCS A-10C.
That was a truly great tutorial. It really summed up the capabilities of the F-15's radar in LockOn. Thanks for taking the time to make it because this was far more useful than the manual. Looking forward to seeing the others as well.
@DonLduk Make a quick mission with some fiendlies and bandits out ahead of you. Friendlies will be circles and bandits will be rectangles. In TWS, the rectangles and circles will be darker, but a heading vector will be added to show the direction they are headed. This is the "stick" you describe.
witch game is it

Can i just turn around after launching the AMRAAM's? Or do i have to stay tracking the enemies with the radar till the AIM-120 goes active?

Instead of waiting for the friendly to pass by, you could have fired the slammers at the bandits using STT mode.

@ilike2watch001 Yes, but the purpose was to demonstrate TWS and examine one if its weaknesses. Good point though!

If you have FC 2.0 now, is it possible you could give us a tutorial for completing the vs x2 and x4 MiG-31 in the DACT F-15c missions?

Great tut. The manual really makes things sound harder than it should, sim companies need to learn how to write or hire someone who can.

This may be how this game's radar works but the "instructor" knows just enough to give you bad information as far as the real jet works.

It has been a little rocky road coming from ww2 prop sims, but im trying :)

@FrowndUpwn Stick with it! New life has been breathed into lock on with the release of FC 2.0, so learning the sim is definitely worth it!
Glad you liked it! I hope to have some new videos up soon after my exams are done. Hopefully, you will find those just as helpful.

nice explanation of TWS :)
However, I failed to identify the friendly in the radar.they all looked the same square to me. and in TWS they look like square+stick.
