  • I guess you used water to make the leather extremly hard.

But for that you need a mold of the beak to attach the leather around it.

What material was that? wood, clay?

  • Where can I find that mask, I want it

  • @Adrian74453 I sell it at tombanwell dot etsy dot com

  • can you wear one with glasses on?

  • @OuroborosRhee I'm afraid not.

  • You should do a video on the rabbit one!!:)

  • Turns out I am unable to buy one due to financial conditions. However, I would like to make my own. Where can I buy leather?

  • i wonder what people would think if you went shopping with it on!

  • thankyou for sharing your art tom

  • man I wish I had that money I am making a movie and need a plague doctor look

  • Someone on eBay is selling hand made plague doctor masks for $130 that look very similar to this. Yours does look a little better from what I see but I can't pay that much. The stitching around the eyes doesn't matter since I have steampunk goggles. I'll check back to see if the price ever goes down or get the one off eBay. Need it for a masquerade party in a couple months. Good work though.

  • Would I order this via email if I wanted rivets and grey lenses? Also, are the rivets on the tan version painted, or do they remain their brass color?

  • can you make a tutorial on how to make one of these? (minus all of the stitching of course, I just want to know how to cut and place the leather, and how to insert the lenses)

  • $285 plus shipping.

  • @tombanwell

Just this one or do you have many of these?

  • @Turtan4 We will keep making these to sell. We usually have some ready to ship.

  • $285 plus shipping.

  • How much for one of these beautiful creations?

  • I've found riveted versions of the white and black ones... is there a riveted version of THIS one?

  • @SoonToBeAwesome We can make the riveted version Krankheit in this tan brown color for $215.

  • @tombanwell Can I pay more for one with colored lenses?

  • @SoonToBeAwesome You can have red or gray, same price as the clear.

  • @tombanwell Thank you for the useful information!

  • I would buy one right this minute, but unfortunately, I don't have enough money to get this AND a new computer. However, I will be buying one right after.

  • man i want one of these

  • 1:20 you look awesome btw where did you get the mask??

  • That shit just looks weird n kinda creepy

  • A mazing

  • why is everyone obsessed with this now

  • you should walk around with that on just to screw with people.

  • I kinda think quite a few of your potential buyers are rather retarded... Does no one know how to spell? Come on, people. Anyway, this is an excellent mask. I've been fascinated with the black plauge and have always wanted one of these, I just might look into buying one..

  • dude so amazing how mutch can it be sold for

  • Can you send me the design for all four pieces!? Please!

  • How much :o

  • assassins creed

  • I'm curious on how this would hold up after wearing for several hours. Is it hard to breath in? hows visibility? do the lenses ever fog up?

  • @ghosturiel I have never worn it for very long, but I've never had anyone complain about not being able to breath in it.

  • @tombanwell May I ask how much things like this cost to make, and how much time and effort do they need. I've always been interested in crafting with leather, but wanted to know how much experience is needed and where to start.

  • @ghosturiel ok my good sir if you know wat that mask was disigned i wouldent mind being hard to breath. it was made for doctors who tryed to kure people with the black plegue

  • Lovin how the beard sticks out

  • Excuse me sir, but can this mask be worn with spectacles?

  • @kimchimafia Unfortujnately not.

  • amazing talent

  • you sir, are an excellent leatherworker

  • I have a new riveted version of this mask which sells for $195. I'm running a naming contest on my blog through Nov 15, 2011, with a mask as the prize. See details there: tombanwell.blogspot.com

  • I go to a renaissance fair every year and I'm planning on putting together a plague doctor costume for next year. I hope I can save up enough to buy one of your masks. You have amazing and beautiful skills! This is the most stunning plague doctor mask I have seen crafted :)

  • Great video Tom! Thanks for sharing!

  • wow, it looks very authentic and stable, I really admire you for your skills! Keep up your good work!

    greetings

  • may i Get the patterns so I can try to make this myself?

  • O_O Time to be BEAK MAN!

  • If these sold for less, maybe around $100 to $150, I'd buy one.

  • How did you make the leather so hard?

  • I am currently working on making a leather plague doctor mask like this one, because I'm not willing to spend $385 on something that I can do myself. And if you don't think I can make one... we will see how my mask turns out.

  • I want it so bad but i really cant afford it :( i'd buy it for $50 no doubt.

  • I was looking for this leather mask!!!!! Im gonna buy one right now !!!!

  • pfffffttt.... its a great mask but dontya think $285 is pushin it just a little??

  • @CrystalWarriior pretty dang cheap, actually, it´s a peace of history

  • @CrystalWarriior I don't think you understand the basics of how much a quality product costs.

I'm guessing these are all hand made and are most likely some of the best quality masks of this sort you will find.

  • @CrystalWarriior have you seen how much work it takes amd how much the materials cost?

  • Can u make me one?? I will buy one

  • @jtl560 You can buy one at tombanwell.etsy.com

  • @tombanwell Might I ask why this particular mask is $285 when the majority of your other masks are under $100USD? I myself, and quite a few others would buy this mask if it were cheaper. I would be willing to pay $100 or thereabouts for this mask, but not $285, which in my eyes is quite absurd. Forgive me if I'm being rude, but I genuinely would like to know why there is such a premium on this particular item.

  • @ROONTANG Because it has hours and hours of hand stitching.

  • @tombanwell Well at any rate, they're very cool. I wish I could own one!

  • @ROONTANG How about because the artist is charging $285. Why do you feel entitled to someone's art at any price other than what they ask for it? You clearly do not understand value. Value is, and always will be, a combination of the asking price, and the price somebody is willing to pay for something. Supply vs. Demand. I am willing to pay at least $285 for a quality piece of art, therefor, $285 is AT LEAST the actual value of this item.

  • @dslieker Jesus, what's your problem? First of all I don't feel 'entitled' to this product, for either it's current price or lower. I'm not 'demanding' that Mr. Banwell lower his price. Is it a crime to inquire about an items monetary value? The obvious point of my question to Mr. Banwell was clearly understand why this mask in particular costs a great deal more than his others.

  • @dslieker Furthermore, consumer value and satisfaction is not entirely based on the simple equation of supply VS. demand. Take it from someone who has studied marketing and has a career that largely revolves around advertising.

  • Dear Santa....

  • I want one.

  • Can you make a tutorial of making this? Would be awesome to make one on my own, really. =)

  • @tobanwell can i buy this from you?

  • @MizZtar Yes, at tombanwell.etsy.com

  • @tombanwell hey i'm planing on buying one but i don't know if i should get the brown one or the white which one should i get?

  • @thestupidmariovideos The original plague doctor masks were white, but some northern European masks were plain brown leather.

  • I love it.

  • Really cool, I wanna try making one

  • they would put herbs in the beak cause they thought it would protect them and on the boat they thought that when they burn herbs the smoke would clean the air of the disease

  • Thumbs up if you're here for medic's in tf2.

  • creepy

  • Looks so legit! Like you went back in time and stole one.

  • Did you have the patrons of the mask? i mean the mask but in 2nd dimention ,Thanks :)

  • How much would the shipping cost if it was sent to Denmark?

  • @GodSince1994 Shipping to Europe is $31.

  • @tombanwell Thank you very much, I am really thinking about buy this, it fits perfectly for my coat and it looks amazing. How flexible is the leather? Is it stiff, or is it so you can bend it and kind of "fold" the mask so it fits in a backpack?

  • @GodSince1994 It is fairly stiff. You could bend it if you forced it, but I do not recommend it.

  • @tombanwell Great. And how much of the face does it cover? I'm especially thinking about how much of the jaw it covers, because I couldn't see it in the video for your awesome beard.

  • @GodSince1994 It is designed to come just below the chin.

  • @tombanwell Very nice, next time I get my paycheck, I'll be looking into the shipment info and see if my budget can afford it

  • Do you ship the mask to Norway?

Im really thinking about buying one :-)

  • @TheWickedPanda Yes, we ship anywhere in the world. Go to tombanwell.etsy.com for the shipping cost and to purchase.

    Best, Tom

  • I would buy one of these in a heartbeat if they werent so darn expensive. oh well, great job on the masks though!

  • It was also used in the 15th century, and not just in venice.

  • noooo, im a year late, haa. i want that!

  • These are By far the coolest masks in the world.

  • is this considered as a gas mask?

    looks very steampunkish.

  • Dude this mask is awesome, I want one D:

  • Inside they (the 'beak masks') were filled with aromatic items (i.e. herbs). The masks were designed to protect plague doctors from putrid air, which (according to the miasmatic theory of disease) was seen as the cause of infection. We know today that plague doctor's uniform (including the famous beak mask) was useless and did not protect them from the bubonic plague...

  • @0masakra0 Thanks for the heads up about 16th century medicine. That was really useful...

  • @0masakra0 But their uniform sounds and looks like quite useful against fleas, which were the plague vectors.

  • @0masakra0 This is not entirely true. The doctor's uniform was somewhat effective against the non-flea types (pneumonia) of plague. Since they were not protected against flea bites, they succumbed to the plague sometimes. However, the herbs and small air holes did protect them against infected saliva and mucus from sneezing, coughing, etc.

  • @dslieker Where did you take it from? I'm a history major and I even wrote a paper on so called black death and I'm sure for 100% that their uniform did not give anything at all, as described above anyways.

  • I have only one very important question. How do you breath in this thing? I don't see any ventilation holes, and it looks kinda thick.

  • Very nice sir!

  • who ever wheres the plague mask looks like a bad ass

  • Pure Quality

  • how much do they cost?

  • @Gunz6783 Simply go to his site and you'll see...

  • how did they breath, ya know like wernt they breathing in there own co2?

  • Absolutely Remarkable

  • beautiful.

  • Ominous, but awesome. Fine piece of work, fine fellow.

  • You are truly talented, I just hope someday I will be able to afford that mask! (:

  • why did they have beak?

  • @WatcherGate magic
