not the greatest battleship, just the largest, with their superior fire control the U.S. fast battleship could have gone toe to toe with the yamatos anyday.
@dhamrick100 dhamrick100 comment : so dumb.... f-f-s did u even look at the actual diferences between any US battleship at that time and Yamato ? Why do you think it was sunked by planes ?!?
@ratonel78 It was sunk by the planes because they got to her first. And it was all over in 1 hour and 31 minutes. Long before any US Battleship could come near.
her and her sisters were junk. the all or nothing armour concept was not going to give the jap navy the advantage they needed. it was just a big huge target for the u.s. navy. dumb idea and should of never been built. but i am glad they was stupid to build them. helped shortn the war at sea.
All thanks to the first ever microwave radar, giving americans an extreme edge.
But todays artillery is very sophisticated and doesn't require line of sight, a yamato with todays radars would have flattened the americans from 50km away
"We knew we could never compete with the US in numbers alone, but we could build one really superb battleship that would destroy many ships on the other side."
hahaha. I don't think the Yamato sank a single ship throughout the entire war, except for possibly the USS Gambier Bay (little escort carrier) at the Battle of Samar.
in the pacific war ,there was no battle between ships japan and US ,when japan lost 4 aircraft carriers and thier big battleships yamato and Mushasi are useless..
aircraft carries are big advantage during the Pacific war..
they dont make it the they did back then now all the shells guide them selfs i am about to go in the navy and i would rather go in the navy back then then today
The Yamato was an impressive ship alright, but no match for the concentrated air attacks delivered by the U. S. Navy with hundreds of aircraft. That lesson should have been learned when her sister ship, the Musashi, was sunk by air attack several months prior during the Leyte Gulf battles.
@warp9p65 They did not learn the lesson, they created the lesson. Back off the coast of singapore the japanese sank the pride of the British fleet, the "Repulse and another. So, they knew the Yamato was doomed.
There's no use. Germans had Dora , an 800 mm canon and even this one didn't decide the the final of the war. Dora's range was 47 km and Yamato's gun were 42 km. And the natzi's gun was almost double.
Wouldent of been really good... The Super Yamato would of had only 6 20 inch guns, in my opinion if Japan were to build and commission a super yamato, i'd prefered it if it had 4-5 3 18 inch gun turrets making for 12-15 18 inch guns, or 9 20 inch guns on 3, 3 gun turrets, now that'll be something along with another foot of armor. o_O
Think about Japan's lack of resources to build any more Yamato class battleships. They needed numbers above all else , not more super ships which couldn't be everywhere at once.
But the problem is they couldent keep up with the US in numbers so they needed individual superiority. Had it not been for the disatrious result of midway all 5 yamatos would of been built and the US's victory in the pacific uncertain...
hahaha no way bismark was weak in comparison, 15s to 18s plus more barrels im sure she was slower but come on. Yamato was in a league of her own. part of me wishes we didnt hunt her down.
The Battleship is not just size, guns, speed, protection and design. It is also the training of the crew. On paper the Yamato and her sister ship Musashi were the strongest most powerful battleships ever built. The Bismarck had a well trained crew and could take a beating, her gunnery was excellent, the Hood was hit and sunk rather quickly. The Yamato was BIG however there were other Battleships that were better utilized that had much more successful careers.
Just because it wasnt properly utilized, or was given a chance to fight does not mean it was a useless ship. Had the Yamato and Musashi been at Surigo strait instead of the Fuso and Yamashiro you could not possibly tell me they would actually do bad.
Hell if it was ever in a battle against another battleship or if a allied carrier was ever in its range it would of been a bad day for the allied forces.
Would have, could have, should have. For a battleship like Yamato to get within gun range of an Allied carrier would have required a massive lapse on the part of the Allies. The U.S. had cracked the Japanese naval codes, making big surprises less common after Pearl Harbor. The Yamato's best use would have been to bombard Hawaii on December 8, 1941 when U.S. forces were in chaos, and force the elusive U.S. carriers to commit.
Yamato could of also helped significantly with AA support at midway, could of saved the Hiei and Kirishima in Guadacanal along with destroying the South Dakota and Washington... I think the after midway the Japanese admirals simply lost their nerve... I mean jeez your already at an industrial disadvantage and you just lost the majority of your carrier forces, you might as well take whatever advantage you have and use it...
Yamato's best role was as a screen for fleet carriers and would have prevented enemy battleships and cruisers from getting too close. If the Imperial Japanese surface fleet was screening her carriers at Midway like they should have been instead of 300 miles away the battle would have unfolded totally differently and Japan's navy would have stayed potent for years longer than it did. But it would never have parity with the American production capacity even in the best light.
Don't make uneducated comments Ultima, The Bismark was a big ol' outdated vessel. It's anti-aircraft capabilities were just obsolete. Look it up on Wikipedia, then try not to look stupid anymore.
Ultima, don't be an idiot. Yeah the Bismark was a bassass ship, but it was built with old technology. Just because a ship is huge, that does not make her more powerful. The Yamato had it's 18in guns and anti-aircraft batteries. The Bismark was clearly useless against aircraft. Look it up on wikipedia then try not to make stupid uneducated comments
lol, u surely dont know, what u're talking about. Bismarck was big, but Yamato would own. Look for the stats of this two ships in wiki. Yamato was faster, bigger and had much more firepower. I would very like to see Yamato in real.
rubbish, you just have to see the firepower, armour and size of this super-battleship and see it would have needed both bismark and tirpitz to have a chance against her. Look how many torpedoes and bombs it took to sink her!! No other battleship could have taken that sort of punishment for so long.
The Musashi alone (the Yamato's sister ship) took I believe 15 - 24 direct hits, 10 - 15 damaging near misses, and 4 torpedo hits and still took two hours to sink.
The other part of the movie is unfortunately only available on Discovery in channels outside the US and on PBS (NOVA) in the US. However the DVD is available on Amazon.
NOVA broadcast a poorly researched documentary. IJN Yamato, part of a planned class of 5 vessels, had an identical sistership, IJN Musashi, which was sunk in the Battle of the Sibuyan Sea, and a half-sister, IJN Shinano, a Yamato class battleship hull converted to an aircraft carrier. Shinano was actually the largest ship built during WWII, and was until the launch of the nuclear carrier Enterprise in 1961.

Biggest ships ever
1) Knock Nevis supertanker
2) Batillus class supertanker
3) Eso Atlantic class supertanker
4) Emma class container ship
In fact, the Nimitz class carrier and the forthcoming G. Ford super carrier are bigger.
In fact, thousands of ships are bigger than the Yamato. It's still the biggest battleship, though.
