Roger Ebert is such a tight ass. I was 5 years old when I saw these films, I knew pain was real, scars don't disappear, and bullets kill. But DAMN was it fun watching Arnold toss a dozen Mall security guards in Commando! These movies were popular because people got sick of Hollywood characterizations of Vietnam vets as crazed pyscopaths with tortured minds, we went from one extreme to another and the more the media and critics whined, the more over the top they got.
@formgren The Expendables movie is directed by Sylvester Stallone, of course it'd be awsome! (I haven't seen it though, but it looks pretty cool, and I'm not really into a lot of new movies). I love his movies, and there's something about his directional style that I just love. He inspires me to makes movies one day.
I just have to LOL at Ebert's condescending words on the "education" & "tastes" of people who like these movies. Not for nothing but most people who still like 80's action movies like myself are at least self-aware enough to know how bad these movies really are. We check our brains at the door & laugh at the sheer absurdity of it all. However, ask a random person these days their thoughts on the even stupider movies made today. They actually believe these movies are GOOD. Who's the real idiots?
Great clip and only goes to show how stupid critics are. Can't think of too many people that saw Rambo and took it for anything more than pure fun and entertainment. Yeah, there was a little pride to go along with out American icons of the day, but America as a whole was smart enough to know fact from fantasy. Now Stallone is revered as one of if not THE greatest action star of all time. Take that Roger Ebert.
The obvious message of the first two Rambo movies are Veterans need to be treated with some diginity and respect. They went through so much and many were treated like garbage. Sure there action films but to me they hold a lot of meaning.
3:29 Oh really did you ever notice the scars on his chest? He seemed to be remembering and feeling a lot of pain in the flash backs in first blood part 1.
Why is this bad taste or a role model. What a bullshit, it's entertainment, we like to see some action that's all. All these people getting offended by the violence are just sissypants conservative people trying to lock up their kids like tyrants because they're too affraid of a bit of entertainment. Fuck that man.
It's just MOVIES! This is not reality or has any connection to it. These critics were very anal back in those days. My god it's for you to go to the theater and cut your brain off and watch it.
@RASOOL28; you are wrong too, movies have always connections to reality, thy reflect it!!! It's wise to contemplate them that way. They reflect something an let you think about. Rambo films have philosophical quality.
Mr.Ebert makes good points, but he perhaps over-states movies' influence. Countless people grew up and loved these movies, yet are fiercely anti-war today.
Ebert, like presumably most film critics, has always been liberal with his viewpoints and at the time after the 70s had film heroes who were ambigous and flawed it must have been hard to swallow the one dimensional jingoistic action movies that were being churned out.
Roger Ebert was ful of shit. He took these movies way too literally, when they were just good entertainment. Nobody with the intelligence level above that of a fruit fly took them as serious political messages or could not distinguish between fantasy and reality. Nobody went to war because of fucking Rambo - oil and money are the impetus for wars, not movies.
when stallone says "which one of us wouldnt wanna go back and being given that one last shot" he sounds like hes talking about a rocky movie lol.
its so weird seeing stallone in his prime, not talking like rocky. he sounds normal and intelligent. i knew he was, but part of me wishes he sounded more like rocky.
action movies of the 80's rule we need this kind of heroic stuff today because its all a bunch of girls we need positive thinking that we are invincible and we can win and these 80's movies did that for us today movies tell us that we will go down but hey they shouldn't say that they should e giving us all these invincible characters role models that tell us we will win anything no matter what

Very good point! That's the problem with people today. They won't speak their mind. We need to fight back for the America that we had. We are giving America away to everyone else. We need to fight for what we have. We are not #1 anymore. My Father would be embarrassed at the world today.
