Why do you need to use Mr.Surfacers and Mr.Base White?

I don't rate Mr Base White at all.. it's v odd. Games Workshops white is probably the best.

i believe that the 500 can fill in the gaps and more ruffer than the 1000

Yeah bang on. It's the 'grain'. Higher the number the less grainy it is. I find 1200 (primer) almost too smooth and paint won't grip. I prime with Tamiya or Mr Surfacer 1000.
