Uh.. India LONG fought for independence. This included several failed bloody rebellions. Britain left because nationalist senitment was too unified & their economic interests dried up after world war II - india was no longer "cost effective". Just because there were a number of violent rebellions - which all failed - beforehand is quite irrelevant. You stated that bloodshed was required to gain independence. This is wrong. Uh.. India LONG fought for independence. This included several failed bloody rebellions. Britain left because nationalist senitment was too unified & their economic interests dried up after world war II - india was no longer "cost effective". No empire just ups sticks & leaves because the people ask nicely. Gandhi's civil disobedience movement was inspiring and helped galvanise the people but it was not the reason the British left. I don't know if you're naive, but you're romantacising.

@clionaism If you look far enough back through a countries history you will see fighting and bloodshed. Regardless, India gained independence through non violent means. Just because there were a number of violent rebellions - which all failed - beforehand is quite irrelevant. You stated that bloodshed was required to gain independence. This is wrong. As you acknowledge yourself, the Brits left for selfish reasons, mainly economic, but still there was no violence. If not India, try Poland 1989.

Yes but you are implying that the non-violent resistance is the REASON they left. If Britain wanted to withdraw from Ireland, the war of independence wouldn't have happened, nor the civil war. Northern ireland wouldn't have been created, & the long-term problems associated with the new state wouldn't have had the opportunity to exist. It was the minority who fought for Independence for Ireland. The majority of Irish on 1916 condemned the Leaders of the Rising. I've been living in Dublin for the past 9 years (from Scotland). I have to say I 100% agree with you. There is a definite element of brown-nosing in the Irish media, coupled with a kind of self loathing. I think it comes down to a lack of exposure to the other side, south dublin is a million miles away from NI or Glasgow, when was the last time Finbar was asked what school he went to? I saw the Wolfe Tones last night in Yonkers, NY and nothing indicated to me that it was all about the IRA, sure they would talk about them from time to time, but nothing like this. It wasn't a drunken rabble either. It was in a reception hall for a wedding, and there were set up tables and chair numbers. I went up to Tommy Byrne after the show and talked to him about the video, and when I bought up that guy who was saying how they attract the lowest of the low, he said "What an asshole right"

He was caught out blatantly lying - 'get the tape out and I'll prove I didn't say that' - and he was let off lightly.
Having to lie to back up your argument is desperation time and a damning indictment of his integrity as an 'honest' journalist.
I'm not surprised though, he was caught out and widely condemned earlier this year for plagiarising another authors work.
