I was so very lucky and honored to share the stage with all of these men several years ago on a number of occasions and it breaks my heart that Allen is gone. He has always been my absolute hero on the banjo. And so ... Jesse McReynolds stands alone as the sole survivor of this group. Jim- cancer, Jimmy- accident, Keith- MS, and Allen- ? ... love you guys - allot ! there must be one awesome jam session going on up there right now.
Your dad definitely was a great banjo player, this version of Bending the Strings is just as good as the one he had on the various artists albums "20 Bluegrass Originals Instrumentals" and "30 Bluegrass Hits". RIP.
He sure done some inventive picking on some of Jim Eanes's sessions. Especially when he had that changer device rigged up that dropped the d and g strings except it worked with a pedal like a steel. It was on Theres No Need To Be So Lonely and Your Old Standby that I can remember.
Awesome banjo tune. Does anyone know where I can get tab for this? Its kind of unfortunate that most people credit Scruggs with creating this because it was on one of their albums. I assume he played it on their album Golden hits. Can anyone fill me in on the history? Thanks.
Actually on that lp you are referring to, it contains the Flatt & Scruggs older Mercury recordings with one or two extra tracks NOT by F&S...just to fill out the number of lp tracks--and "Bending The Strings" was one of them!
one of my favorite songs played by one of the masters, allen i was told that you bought a banjo from my granpa frank heffinger in leaksville,it wood have been about 1950,i would like to know the truth of this if you look at this sight, thinks.a big fan of yours.
Add another to that list: Allen Shelton - R.I.P.- man, he was good!!

Dad, you always put a smile on our face. We will miss you at Christmas this year but have some film and recordings that will bring us some comfort.
To all the Bluegrass fans - thank you for your love and support of Dad. He is smiling from heaven!

Allan really sounded great here. J&J were fortunate having him around. Does anyone know long he played with J&J ?

Who were the fiddle and bass player in this particular tune?
guitarpicker23 3 years ago
Two young men taken from us much too early. Keith McReynolds on bass, and Jimmy Campbell on fiddle.

Three of them are gone now that Allen's dead.

Allen Shelton is one of the best banjo players of all time. It would have sounded SO much better on his old raised head bow tie though.

Allen doesn't get near the respect in the bluegrass circle he deserves. Great picker!

One of the first banjo tunes I loved! I used to try to crank it out when I was a beginning banjo player. Thanks for the memory.
