  • Thank you thank you thank you PMB for your courage, conviction, intelligence and class.

  • Great great great! Go Union!

  • yeah trumpets, jerkin like a boss

  • way to go! solidarity from ohio where we recently overturned our anti-union bill in our november election!

  • It's just a Polka folks! Pulaksi is home to Polka Days in July. The State Dance of Wisconsin.

  • @wtfisyourdeal You can have your break, and take a lunch while your at it..Better do it while you still can because if unions fall, you will not every get to enjoy a break...

  • @wtfisyourdeal When you step into the work place you will appreciate all that unions have done for the work place - 8 hour work day, minimum wage, age restrictions on employees, time and a half pay for overtime hours, the list goes on. To answer your question, I am with the IBEW. Furthermore, the tabled motion (if you know what that means) was influenced by the comments made by you and others that consider unions to be detrimental - not whether or not they played (not sung) 'union maid'.

  • awesome work guys, solidarity from sydney australia.

  • I am an executive board member of my local union and we were about to send a donation to the Pulaski, WI Marching Band to help defray the cost of your trip to the Rose Bowl. However, after reading the honest, and heart felt posts by the actual band members, we have realized that it would be best to "table" the motion to send the donation. The band did a great job! You guys were awsome and should be proud of your performance. It is too bad that you played "Red Wing" instead of "Union Maid".

  • @tjoyce81 Gimme a break fakeoid. Essentially you say you are "proud" of their performance etc etc....but since they didn't sing a union song you are not going to make a donation? THAT pretty much sums up union mentality.

Second of all. You are not an "executive board member" even though you would like us to believe that and make us feel bad. Why? because every executive I know exhibits CLASS, and going onto a youtube message board crying to us does not exhibit CLASS

  • @tjoyce81 By the way, which union are you? I bet you don't even have the balls to say it. just go back and hide in your corner.

  • @tjoyce81 Yep. Too bad students, you could have been bought by the union. But since you were NOT playing a union song, GFY.

  • thanks guys we need people like you to send a message

  • ~made me cry~

  • good on you, guys. fuckyeah

  • That wasn't a union song, you ignorant idiots: IT'S "RED WING"!! It's an old gaslight-era song. Only the most green-toothed of Marxist hippie morons would even remember the later Guthrie lyrics. The rest of the world knows it as "Red Wing" or "Pretty Red Wing." It's about an Indian maiden pining for her warrior beau who was lost in a battle. If you don't believe me, look up "Red Wing" (song or music) right here on YouTube.

  • SCOTT WALKER FOR PRESIDENT. the song wasnt even about the union haha

  • Great gesture.

  • Thanks, Pulaski High School! You make me proud to be from Wisconsin.

  • fuck yes.

  • The town of Pulaski is almost certainly named after the great Revolutionary War hero Casimir Pulaski, who saved George Washington's life, and became known as the father of American Cavalry. Many towns, streets and counties are named after him. Little Rock, Arkansas is the county seat of Pulaski County. Pulaski Road in Chicago is a major north-south thoroughfare.

It's great to be proud of your heritage. I would keep in mind that your heritage now is Wisconsin and the U.S. With study>learning.

  • It's too late now. Thanks anyway. I'm sure some in the band are basking in the glow. I'd say in about 15 years, maybe less, it will become clear how important it is what is taking place in Wisconsin. For a quick lesson, the last time this country had an income distribution this skewed to the rich was just before the Great Depression. The "Republican" party is the party of the rich. On a national level the "Democrats" are too. Due to the gullibility of most people, we get fake arguments. $ rules.

  • As a student in the band, I would just like to let you all know that we were playing the "Red Wing Polka" not Union Maid. We never wanted to make a political statement we were having fun and representing our little town. We live in a strong Polish community and a lot of students in the band are upset about the assumptions you are making about our band. Please stop and let us enjoy our rose bowl expirence without all this added nonsense. Thank you.

  • @ptownkiss i agree 100%, i know many members of the band im dating one......and i also know its not a political statement....you guys did amazing and i tears in my eyes watching u make that turn....GREAT JOB!!!!

  • 美国工人阶级,团结的斗争,美国工会强大的号召力,影响世界工运的发展。American working class, united struggle, the powerful appeal of the U.S. labor unions affect the development of the world labor movement.

I visit the websites and post comments with the assistance of machine translation.

  • Its also hilarious and ironic how the 2 top comments here with tons of likes are 2 of the most clueless comments on here. Then again, I'm sure most of them were sent here from The Daily Kos, which in that case pretty much explains the influx of cluelessness.

  • Good grief you union people are really fucking stupid. My God. REALLY?

If you think for one second that they were "playing your union tune" - yes, you really ARE that stupid. Pulaski is famous for loving polka...thats it.

I MARCHED in the Pulaski band for 4 years...so yes, i know!

  • @wtfisyourdeal ... Really? It doesn't appear to be a polka these kids are dancing. Rich in tradition for Palaski, huh. I don't think so. It's sad when the ignorant call others stupid.

  • @hzrdad They're not dancing, their MARCHING you fucking idiot. Ever marched in a band moron? EVERYTHING they are doing is choreographed. EVERYTHING is timed. If you actually went to high school and maybe attended some functions and PAYED ATTENTION, you would know. Do yourself a favor and do some research on what a marching band does, and then do some research on Pulaski tradition you clown, it might just open up your eyes that you are drinking a little too much of your union Koolaid.

  • If you ever lived in Pulaski, you would understand how this is a performed polka and not a political statement.

  • @ovenbird3 "This is a performed polka"... Really?! Those kids are dancing the polka? It looks more like a band of kids just having fun and enjoying the spotlight. True, the song has a variation that is a polka, but it also is a folk song as well as a union fight song. With all the labor problems in Wisconsin maybe they should have gone along with the union statements to show solidarity with others in thier community and/or state. I'm sure some of those kids even have parents that are union.

  • Comment removed

  • @hzrdad Also, since your ignorance thinks that these kids are "just having fun and enjoying the spotlight", I will also educate you that they are WORKING - and working hard I might add. Hence the famous sign that they, me, and every other band student for years walked under to get into class which reads "Through these doors walk the hardest working students at PHS"

  • My home school of 1981.

  • Pulaski High School marching band has been playing this polka for years to celebrate the town’s strong polish heritage. They were playing this polka long before the unions started their temper tantrum in Wisconsin. You union assholes need to get over yourselves and realize that the taxpayers of Wisconsin are no longer interested in paying for your inflated wages and Cadillac benefits.

  • @thecorrigan44 Haha, those "inflated wages" are nothing compared to what Goldman Sachs jacked from your pension...

  • On Wisconsin! These kids are incredible. They get it. And Thank You Woody Guthrie -- oh you can't scare me, I'm sticking to the union...

  • I'd really like to think it's 'Union Maid' and not 'Little Red Wing;' I'd really LIKE to think that…

  • FANTASTIC MUSICAL PERFORMANCE great marching also, congratulations.

The TV announcers, however, are so very bad at their profession as to be an embarrassment

    .

  • AWESOME.

  • I do not support Walker at all, with that out of the way - If this musical performance swings the votes to the side of Recall and he is elected out of office because of it - then he has bigger issues then a Band of High School Students playing a song on national television.

  • Great representation by Pulaski marching band to show solidarity with the working people of Wisconsin, who have suffered 5 consecutive months of the highest job loss in the US than any other State.

Union Maid is an inspiring song.

We love you Pulaski marching band.

Recall Scott Walker and save Wisconsin.

  • I wish the sound were a little better, but this is just great! The TV "color" people are airheads, or they know what it takes to stay employed. Those kids are going to savor this for the rest of their lives. I hope to see them at the Capitol doing this. The firefighters' bagpipe bands could use a rest. Now, there's this little matter of a recall.

  • As a graduate from Pulaski I've heard this song many times before in our field shows, the name is "Red Wing Polka" it was dedicated this year to the band directors grandmother.Has nothing to do with the union, or politics in general, it is a fun song polka song and i think the band did a wonderful job and should be very proud. The way the media has blown this up only drags them down and that's not right. GO PULASKI!!!!

  • @zabeaver11 Given the political climate in Wisconsin, it's easy to make everything about politics. Also, I've never heard of the "Red Wing Polka". I really hope your statement is the truth.

  • @mrmeaner69 the political climate is no reason to degrade a band for their amazing performance! look it up yourself, "Red wing polka" was written in 1907 byKerry Mills the lyrics were added later by Woody Guthrie and called "union maid" years later. it is not fair that these student (many my friends) are being criticized for something that they have been playing for years now. Pulaski is a polish town and "Red Wing Polka" is a popular song!

  • @zabeaver11 I never degraded the band for their performance. Actually, I never mentioned their performance, only the perceived use to promote an agenda. And, you will never convince me that any polka can be categorized as a popular song, even in Wisconsin.

  • @mrmeaner69 Trust me its popular.

  • @zabeaver11 Actually, no less than Oscar Brand says that this song goes back to 1878 and is from Canada. That's what he told Woody Guthrie when he wrote "Union Maid." Kerry Mills was just the first person to be a "claim-jumper," musically that is. It may have been "adapted" to be a polka (doesn't sound like a polka to me no matter what anyone says), but it was a folk song first.

  • The superintendent of the Pulaski School District was just on a Milwaukee radio station and confirmed the band was simply playing the Red Wing Polka ... as they've been doing for years now ... long long before the union idiots went crazy in my wonderful state earlier this year. Sorry union losers, but you really don't have that many people on your side.

  • As a Wisconsin high school student, I have to say I'm so proud of the Pulaski high school marching band. Go team!!

  • As a former Marching Band member, and a Union Supporter, I love this. Props. This probably took guts. Keep on going strong!

  • Comment removed

  • The band is not playing UNION MAID.. The band is playing THE MOON SHINES BRIGHT ON PRETTY REDWING, a bluegrass song about an INDIAN maid written in 1907 by Kelly Mills and Thurland Chattaway, look it up here on YouTube. Guthrie plagiarized the tune and lyrics for his song.

  • @KENACT1 Okay then.

  • mrmeaner69 seems to have blown a gasket over this. Great job Pulaski Marching Band!

  • @hsaladwegg No, but I think Nutmeg might stroke out soon...

  • KTLA's commercial-free feed didn't carry it, (their stand is further up the route and the band was well past their cameras by the time they struck this up). Good choice for the band! They can disavow it by saying that it is "Red Wing" when any union worker from Wisconsin knows the tune as "Union Maid". THANKS PULASKI HIGH SCHOOL BAND!

  • Or someone taking advantage of kids who don't know any better and a national audience. "It's for the children" has been the cry of the WEAC for a long time without any actual efforts to accomplish anything "for the children". There are plenty of great teachers out there, but collectively, the unions are holding them back, not holding them up. The same system has been failing (or at least not improving) for decades. How long do we want to fail to give our children an opportunity?

  • @mrmeaner69 hey it's these 'kids" future that is at stake here in Wisconsin they have the right to have an opinion about it!

  • @kia05200 An opinion is based on experience, knowledge or influence. Guess what part the teachers are focusing on? (Hint: It isn't knowledge, but if you follow the comparison of test scores compared to other countries, you'd already know that.)

  • @mrmeaner69 I bet they're behind Germany, where 50% of corporate boards must be labor representatives by law, and they have national health costing much less per capita than we spend, and national home rooftop solar generation. I'm sure our kids are scoring behind theirs.

  • @Dayepipes Yes, they are and behind many other countries as well. Our teachers spend more time with them as well. However, I doubt Germany has to shuffle bad teachers around every year amongst their schools because they are low performers, but are protected by unions. I also doubt they pay teachers to sit in "rubber room" to the cost of millions of dollars like New York does. Having a union does not fix the problem. We've been trying that for years. It's time for change.

  • @mrmeaner69 What do you do for a living?

  • @mrmeaner69 How long have you been teaching?

  • @kia05200 Not if that opinion doesn't fit in with our far right, anti-union, anti-worker anti-education agenda! How DARE these kids think for themselves! Why have we had Limbaugh and Fox News on the airwaves for so long if mere *children* won't fall in line and do what we say?

I know, it's those overpaid, under-worked teachers that made them do it. It must be! Because there's simply no way a seventeen or eighteen year old baby could come to a conclusion on their own!

  • Comment removed

  • @nutmeg42 And you say you're a teacher?

  • @mrmeaner69 Hand wringing about giving kids an opportunity, and at the same time talking about them as if they are mentally impaired idiots that can't and shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion. Make up your mind.

  • @nutmeg42 At what point did I call them mentally impaired idiots? Oh, right. Nowhere. Apparently, it's easier to take put words in someone else's mouth than to form a cohesive response. Glad you're not teaching my kids...

  • Funny. To me it sounded like solidarity, not brainwashing.

  • so the students chose the song? or their taxpayer paid band teacher picked it? either way great to see the band on the national stage

  • @blackwing47682 As a teacher, it's my pleasure to take taxpayer dollars and teach kids about their rights as human beings.

    You're welcome.

  • Our education system is failing due to the teachers' union's inability to be accountable and hold teachers accountable yet we should be excited about this? I'd prefer that the teachers learn how to educate instead of brainwash, but hey, somebody else will fix our messes and pay for our mistakes, right?

  • On, Wisconsin!

  • GOOD for them! It's standing up for their families, their teachers, their neighbors and their futures that are being impacted right now by the horrible cuts Walker is pushing on us. We live one school district over from them and our school taxes went up 14% to cover some of the cuts Walker axed on our schools!

  • SOLIDarity!

  • Thanks Pulaski high school marching band! Great representation for Wisconsin and how hard we are fighting to stop our pea-brain Governor who thinks he is Hitler!

  • @lovegelato Hitler? REALLY? I guess I missed the gas chambers and concentration camps in Middleton. What an uneducated and hateful statement.

  • So they played "Red Wing". Big deal ('cept'n ol' Woody Guthrie wrote some different words for it. LOL!)

    Solidarity forever!

  • amazing! good job Pulaski Marching band.

  • Money speaks for money

    The devil for his own

    Who'll come to speak for

    the skin and the bone?

The Pulaski Marching Band will, THAT'S who.

Solidarity from the mountains of West Virginia...Always and forever!

You guys seriously rock - Great job!!

  • @mountainunion its Pulaski Wisconsin, just sayin

  • Go Pulaski, Solidarity.

  • That's WONDERFUL! Go, Wisconsin kids!

  • Well done !!!!! Thanks for speaking out in such a clever creative way!

  • Adding my appreciation of both the tune chosen and the skill with which it was played. Awesome job, band members! Hope those commentators feel silly right now.

  • Absolutely brilliant!

  • Sweet! I wish high school students in the south was this smart and informed on the issues.

  • This rules so much, solidarity to the workers of Wisconsin and much love to the members of this band. RECALL WALKER

  • This is so inspiring! Solidarity and applause for the impressive members of the Pulaski Marching Band. Honored to have had you play in Southern Cali!

  • THIS is what democracy looks like..... Thanks Pulaski!!

  • You guys and gals in this band are the best !! Smiling for the rest of the day .

  • "Union Maid" played in the Rose Bowl! I LOVE IT!

  • In your face, Governor Walker!

  • AWESOME !! You sound and look GREAT !! Congratulations on being in the parade! Love how you stopped and played for the crowd! Thats how you get remembered! Keep up the GREAT work everyone!

  • You rock, Pulaski! Union Maid in the Rose Parade - took my breath away. Keep on, Wisconsin - the whole world is watching.

  • Can we assume this was in Governor Walker's face? He must have been in the reviewing stand.

  • Beautiful! Way to go kids-and you have an absolutely awesome director, too. Thank you for playing "Union Maid"-Redwing. This is my favorite moment of the whole parade. (Take that, Walker)

This band came out of a town of 3,000? Wow!!

  • Thank you Pulaski, Wisconsin!

  • @dglinstad of course, the music is the old traditional tune Redwing, not written by Woody...just the marvelous lyrics.

  • @dglinstad it was written by Arlo's dad, Woody.

  • Yay for the Union Maid! The audience got it, the commentators had no clue.

  • Union Maid was written by Arlo's dad Woody Guthrie in 1940. The Rose Bowl commentators are absolutely clueless what is going on. Hilarious! What a gutsy band performance/political statement... loved it.

  • High steps, straight lines, fun moves & you sound great!! On-Wis will probably be memorized until you are 36---I can vouch for that and it's a good thing ;) Great times in band!

  • GO PULASKI!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for posting this! I really enjoyed it!
