  • My car Keeps turning off, I have a bad Catty which im about to switch but i think the reason it shuts off is my EGR is dirty. I have a Honda prelude 98 SH

  • what size are the bolts to take off egr ?

  • Just so everyone knows sometimes just spraying the carb cleaner isnt enough..I had to literally scrap the carbon off with a flathead screwdriver in addition to using the carb cleaner since mine was froze up bad. However it worked and I didnt have to buy a new one. Not everyone may have to resort to scraping tho.

  • Good job! You can do this job much faster by leaving the fuel rail in place. Drill the plugs with a smaller bit, then thread in the sheet metal screw that comes with slap hammer to pull them. With this fast method though, you can't reach one plug, but cleaning the other 5 will make thing clean enough for proper flow and no CEL. Just use fresh can of carb cleaner with a tube. Blast into every port hole. Let it sit for 15 minutes. Go back again, and all the carbon will be liquified.

  • @1wizardofx awesome! thanks for the tip!

  • @Awa1989jolie bitte lade nochmal das video mit timbaland hoch,,thx ^^

  • wtf why am i watching this and how did i get hear lol i own a nissan frontier

  • nice gloves lol

  • @yamaraptor250 its gloves to prevent your hands from getting dirty so you can be more efficient throughout the day.

  • do you have to tap new holes?

  • @apyer918 if you want to clean the ports then yes u do

  • i clean twice mine and it keep trowing cel p0401, for about ten months i keep using it like that and then i did a troubleshoot one day, then i found out that the vacuum solenoid goes out. so now its good save me $250 :)

  • Did you have to do anything special to access and remove the bolt closest to the fire wall? I tried using a crows foot because I couldn't get a socket in there, rounded it off. :/

  • I did it and now idle is so smooth. Thanks great video!!!

  • Why did you drill out the ports for?...that was a little fast for me. Could you explain that a little more?

  • What did you drill the plugs out for...that was a little fast for me. Could you explain that a little more?

  • Have to do mine, damned things are so expensive new cleaning can add a few years.

  • you change the egr valve? where u bought it at?

  • @TheFrhen I didn't change the EGR Valve. I just cleaned it.

  • theres an easier way to clean the egr. you can just spray seafoam in the intake side while the engine is idle and it will clear all the carbon out of the ports, once all the carbon is gone youll know because the engine will either rev really high or idle out and die

  • Pretty good video. A+

  • man that was a big job _FOR ME ... wish you had enough tape to show step by step... But thank awesome job

  • good vid i had the same problem on a toyota avensis d4d go to my channell. just gave it a good clean with carb cleaner, it solved the problem

  • nice gloves .....wtf

  • @rockytherobson he even shaked it..hahaha..

  • I just did this to my 91 accord and let me tell you how nasty a job it was once I got into the two holes at the bottom. There are a LOT of soot and deposits in there. Soooo much... I had to use one giant bottle of carb cleaner and 1 bottle of throttle body cleaner to clean it all out!... It was a gargantuan mess of soot when I sprayed it in the holes!

But I cleaned it good though so im glad but I may have cancer now cause my hands were covered : X

But I want to clean my EGR ports next.

  • V V V yes seafoam is a great product! V V V if you are broke and don't wanna take out the plugs from the manifold here is what you do! I did it and it worked out great for me!

First off remove the egr valve Next clean the egr valve until it move freely without it being stuck then get a metal hanger and make a hook about the size of a baseball and fish it into the square hole wiggle it around so it goes in all the way IT'S TRICKY and when it can't go any farther go forward and back for a littl

  • The way to fix this crap is just seafoam the engine and put the rest in the tank. Other wise run the engine with some 2 dollar chemtrol at walmart is very effective more so then seaform and will eat everything from varnish to dirt particles but won't hert the engine much if any. Done this manual method before when a friend had bad plug wires and stuffed egr.

  • i have the same code for my accord 95... but if i clean the EGR.. and i dont clean the ports... is it bad?? would the code stay the same??

  • Wait wat. I was watching tf2-video

  • I have a scan code po401 and I installed a new EGR valve and reset the code and The Check Engine light came back on after driving a half mile and my car also runs hot but when my AC is on my cooling fans cools down my engone but if I dont have The AC on my car runs hot because the cooling fans are not running. I also had a ametuer mechanic give me a tuneup and I found he broke one of my spark plugs and I replaced it but my car still feels like its missing, should i replace All my spark plugs?

  • @BlackFreemasonsSuck Check your coolant level, you might need to flush and fill your old coolant if you're over heating. My '96 Eclipse was overheating at idle, turns out I was low on coolant. Did a flush and fill and hasn't over heated, even with the AC off at idle or while on the highway. Maintenance is key; treat her right.

  • @doctoroctagonaBLARGH hey thanks

  • actually there are smaller holes inside where you took out the plugs, that need cleaned out.....all I saw you do was clean the large hole where the plug was.....FYI,use a drill bit or small gun cleaner brush to clean out the tinier hole inside.

  • pretty cool vid. thanks for the show

  • Gay

  • how the F did you get the second bolt off the egr? the one most near the IM.

I used a wrench to get the one near the head off but I cant get the other and im stripping it :/

  • @frankyjoseph91 use a long extension. at least 6 inches. if u dont have a long one, attach an extension to another extension...

  • @frankyjoseph91 its happening to me also =(

  • have you ever fixed a P1457 code on your lude, coz thats what igot right now. help.

  • at 3:24 he got a txt msg and it's from an iphone. listen carefully.

  • @joelg1988 lol

  • What are the plugs for that you drill out? What part of the engine are they in? (I don't have a GM car) Why do these plugs need to be drilled out, nothing is flowing through these holes since they are factory plugged.

  • my car got 225k miles on it and still run like a pro, and it happen that i clean all the port and after a month, the lights comes out, i read the code and it is P0401 again. It means egr valve itself is need to replaced men it cost 300+ at honda.

  • @TheFrhen Hope you did'nt buy it there because it only cost about a $105 at tasauoto.com

  • Comment removed

  • @TheFrhen who? the light will come back on on my car? its been 15 months and no light, so apparently i did a good job regardless of removing that extra port on the side :D

  • 4:41 RAINBOW VACUUM FTW!!!!

  • Hey napafitpro,

    Got a question for ya.

You ever do this and have the tap snap off in the plug?

Also, I was wondering how worried I should be about shavings. Should I worry about microscopic particles? Or just the big chunks - wat i can see? Ive been vacuuming but... just worried.

  • i dont use gloves cuz i didnt know working on cars was bad for you.i change my oil and then make i sandwich b4 washing my hands.i wonder whats going to happen :(

  • will a dirty or bad egr valve cause the car to stall ?

  • do you need the air pressure gun?

  • @LeilaP700 no

  • @123LouieV if u feel u cleaned it well n the cel didn't go away, then the EGR valve needs to be replaced. If your idle bounces there might be other issues. Try adjusting your valves as that might help with the idle.

  • Alright thanks, my 97 prelude only has the P0401 code so after cleaning the egr port and plugs if nothing changes does it mean i didnt clean it well? the problem i have right now is when my car is warm my idle SOMETIMES bounces.

  • okay so i have removed my egr valve port and clean it and didnt get new port plugs cuz kragen and pep boys dont have them so i will probably ask honda dealer if they have them and there called EGR port plugs?

  • @123LouieV yes, honda will have them, less than a dollar per port. they are called EGR Port Plugs.

  • thanks for the video, im about to attempt this tommarw on my prelude and is there anything i should know that you didn't say in the video?

  • @123LouieV i didnt get the pulling of the ports out with the slide hammer in the video. hopefully thats understood if u have a slide hammer. One thing u should be aware of are the injectors. Some gas will pour out, but thats ok. just becareful to keep the O-rings in tact make sure they fall out n get lost. other than that u should be good

  • get something american.....save your time rooks

  • hey another quick question if u dont mind,,, u know how u drilled the plugs, do u go all way thru the plug? or justy enought to tap it,,,,, and also after tapping it with 6mm thread,,, wat kind of screw did u use to screw the plug out?

  • @jdmsrv93 I dont mind, feel free to PM me as many questions. I'm not a car expert, but u can always ask. I just may not respond too quickly. email works best, PM me and I'll shoot u my email if you need. For the drilling to tap, I drilled a few cms deep, about halways through the plug. It's trial and error to see how deep the plug is, but it won't hurt if you drill all the way through the plug. I've done it, but it still works. Again, just drill deep enough so the screw has enough teeth to grab

  • @jdmsrv93 I tapped with a 6mm thread and used the screw that came with my slide hammer. I don't know the size of the screw. Try comparing your screws to your tap kit drills. You can hold each one side to side for comparison or point them against each other to evaluate the size difference.

  • @napafitpro thanks alot man, appreciated it,

  • u know how u drilled the ports and took the thing out where can u get them from plugs to plug it back on?... and when taking the fuel rail, did the injectors came out too.. without damaging the o ring? thanks

  • @jdmsrv93 You can get the plugs from the Honda dealership. Its less than a $1 per plug. They're called Port Plugs. When i took out the fuel rail, the injectors did come out and luckily i didn't damage the O-rings. I did help a friend do his and a few of his O-rings were destroyed. Be careful when removing.

  • @napafitpro thannks for reply im going to do this on my srv, btw can u also buy the o rings saperately and just put them back on like a gasket, or do u need to glue them on with something, and is there easier way of taking the plugs out without tapping them and screwing them ? thanks

  • @jdmsrv93 u can buy the o-rings just in case. Having extra o-rings around will be helpful. They're a bit tricky to put back on, but its doable. As far as taking out the plugs, theres no other way besides drilling and pulling it out with a slide hammer. Unfortunately I didnt get the pulling of the plugs on video, but that process is simple.

  • @napafitpro ic, can u spray carb cleaner down those ports or u just cleaned it with a brush ? really appreiate u commenting back,

  • @jdmsrv93 yes, perfectly safe. SPRAY LOTS. Let the ports fill up with it with carb cleaner. It's hard to get into the ports with the brush alone. You'll need the carb cleaner to break up all the carbon that the brush cant. Go wild with the carb cleaner, trust me.

  • @napafitpro alright man thanks alot for ur help,,

  • umm carbon build up... this makes me wonder, would seafoam fix something like that? obviously it wouldnt be as good as taking it out and cleaning yourself, but wouldnt it clean it?

  • @jonyrock good point! Seafoam is a great method to clean out the carbon. However, I did seafoam yet it wasn't enough. The CEL was not cleared. For others, applying seafoam will help regardless of it clearing out the CEL. Thanks jonyrock

  • cover the drill bit with vaseline or wheel bearing grease and it will catch all the shavings and then vaccuum afterwords...the clogged ports wont let the left overs fall in....i would duct tape a piece of 3/4 inch pvc sprinkler pipe into the giant suction end of the shop vac. this works also for sucking water up from under the carpet from mystery leaks ie. sunroof or door weather stripping,

  • @dd18614 awesome advice, thanks!

  • obviously its carbon, not dirt

  • pretty knowlegable young guy. thanks for the egr tips.

    good video

  • i still dont understand how you kept all the chips of metal from going into the ports

  • @billy0132 i didnt get the vacuum part in the video because i needed two hands to do the job. basically as you drill have a vacuum hose right next to the drill so that the metal shavings will get sucked up.

  • hey, where did you buy that pressure gun?

  • @enxinas i bought it at AutoZone. u dont need the pressure gun, just depress the level with ur finger or a screwdriver.

  • @napafitpro ok cool thanks man.

i have different car, so i need to get that still.

  • This video came close to showing use of a slide hammer to pull the egr plugs. I would like to see how much effort is required to get them out. napafitpro, do you have any footage of the slide hammer being worked? Thanks.

  • @topgrain i dont have footage of the slide hammer. i needed both my hands and so i just didnt record that part. its fairly simple. once u get a slide hammer it'll make more sense how to use it

  • You could have cleaned it by just spraying some wd 40 or better down the narrow pushrod guide. This would disperse the carbon. What is your plugwire resistance?

Usually a real hot spark should not allow carbon deposits to form. Is the ign. coil tired?

  • That looks like a Honda but can't tell what year. If you have an EGR that you clean, replace, etc. and it still won't do it's job, the culprit is probably in the EGR Solenoid located inside the control box that sits on the firewall. It's a little round thing attached with 2 screws. If it is bad all the cleaning in the world won't make your EGR valve open and close properly.

  • @malebc most pro machanics wear glaves dip shit

  • @malebc

A lot of the grime, oil sludge and stuff under the hood are carcinogens. Unsafe to have under fingernails and in small cuts on your hands. The OP is right in wearing the gloves. I wear them too when working under the hood of my car. The wuss would be the mechanic who develops some strange blood disorder from letting that bad stuff get into his system.

  • @topgrain Glad I just read what you typed. I need to get some latex gloves >_<! TY!

  • Ooh yea and to those fucking fags that are talking shit about the video go and make your own damn videos also learn to spell before you make a comment again thanks alot napafitpro

  • I get a PO300 code. New ignition module, new ignition coil and new spark plugs on car. The engine has a vibration, sounds like a go cart and will not accelerate over 25 on the flat road. Someone suggested a stuck EGR valve is my issue. Do you think that sounds like a good possibility? I am tired of putting money into this car. I just want to get it running to sale it. I want to make sure it runs properly 1st. Thanks.

  • Thanks alot bro you saved me from taking my lude to the honda dealer

  • @malebc I will put money on it this guy knows a shit ton more than you

  • @malebc What are while gloves?

  • I have a code P406 : Egr Valve voltage to high - would cleaning it out help? or should I just stick to the electrical side of things? I have a Dodge Ram Quad 1500 SLT Hemi.

I won't go as far as drilling but just the cleaning...any suggestions?

  • @Rob2977 2) If I were looking at the electrical...what would be my first step? Also this started when I put in a radio and speakers..not sure if it would have anything to do with voltage going to the EGR..??

  • @Rob2977 Sounds like you upgraded the system without updating your power supply. You alternator is probably going. Cheap the voltages with a volt meter when the car is running, average is about 14.1v. my system is just about 14.8v and guys with the big setups get 15+ but if your car is under 14v then the alternator is probably going and it will get worse and worse until you have to rev up at stop lights to not working at all. Chances are your battery is done now too.

  • @noobtonthe3rd Thanks ...For some reason when the humidity goes away (2years in a row now) the light goes off. it's now 16 C here in Ottawa at 25 c + humidity...light turns on...I have no idea what's causing that...also not sure if it's a coincidence when I turn on the cd player that I got installed with speakers ..light turns on after I start back up a few times after a few hours...it's back off lol...

  • @Rob2977 I have issues, not sure how you screw up check with cheap but apparently I did. Anyways for sure check the voltage but also you should check the engine light. If you go to high school you may be able to borrow one or possible if your college has one. Otherwise canadian tire and elsewhere will charge you a ridiculous 100$ for a 4 minute job... not even. But that would be the best way to find out.

  • @Rob2977 Oh sorry did not see a first post before. This makes my reply useless. High voltage is a good indicator that there is not enough recirculation. Which means, Yes, its clogged fully or partially and should be cleaned.

  • @Rob2977 At the very worst you end up with a cleaned EGR if that is not the problem which will help with emissions anyways.

  • Is the pressure tool necessary to open the valve or can you just prop it open with a flatheat? (I have a P0401 error reading too)

  • @bodymassage no its not necessary at all. i had a pressure gun so I decided to use it. u can jut depress it with ur finger any other tool. good luck!

  • You saved me $700. Thanks!

  • @califsu no problem!

  • is drilling the ports all that necessary or can i alleviate the problem simply by cleaning the egr?

  • @rad2k7 The CEL indicates the egr passages are clogged. That could mean the EGR valve is dirty or both the ports n valve are dirty. I suggest taking apart the EGR valve and cleaning it since it's the easiest, then see if the code and cleared. If not, u have to clean the ports as well then. Good luck

  • Thanks for the upload man, really helped out.

  • @Ericsimagination Hey no problem. It helps when u have a visual guide rather than just words.

  • just because dont speak proper English doesn't mean im not intelligent i grew up in ny an lived her my hole life i speak with a ny accent an slang so suck on that one u fuckin fag

  • realy trashy people well i work as a mechanic engineer an every one of the workers i work wit dosnt us gloves an most of them proble got a nicer an bigger house than u

  • @juggalo4life12401 So no gloves = didn't do it right? I thought when the check light is off it's done. Again, idiot

  • @juggalo4life12401 you can't even speak proper english. no wonder you don't use gloves. your intelligence is very low.

  • I don't know what I hate worse - working on my car's internal combustion engine or paying someone to work on it for me. I think I'd rather have an Electric car. This is insane. I pray that the era of gasoline engines passes away very soon. God help Us All. Down with the internal combustion engine - Up with renewable energy. Down with Big Oil - Power to the People

  • This is an awesome video! Thanks for doing this. I'm not 100% sure if I had my EGR unit replace and cleaned but when I purchase my 97 Prelude ages ago I had a CEL come on within the first two months and a mechanic fixed it. I remember him saying something about the EGR when he scanned the car for codes but I didn't have a single clue what he was talking about. I wasn't as advanced as I am now so thank you once again for this tutorial. If I ever have to do this I will know exactly how.

    Thanks!

  • U R A FUCKING PUSSY WORKING ON A CAR WITH LATEX GLOVES WHEN U WORK ON A CAR U R SUPOSE TO GET DIRTY IF U AINT DIRTY U R NOT DOIN IT RIGHT U FUCKIN FAG

  • @juggalo4life12401 Hmm, thanks for the interesting life concept.

  • @juggalo4life12401 apparently you don't use gloves. The chemical he uses require them. If he didn't it could lead to poor spelling and brain damage which apparently you have. 13 mistakes in your grammar and thats excluding large caps which is annoying in itself.

  • @juggalo4life12401 I'm sure his elbows get dirty dumbass.

  • hey i have a question for you. how much would all this cost in a shop to get it cleaned?

  • @blackpowder911 It'd probably cost about 200-400 bucks

  • @napafitpro I have to get my 2k Prelude from the shop...My bill for the same repair 580.00 I cleaned the EGR valve myself but the CEL came back. I didn't trust myself to do what is in this video. The "shop" is a mom & pop, not the dealer...Perhaps I should have gone to the dealer?

  • Comment removed

  • @whorf23 I have a '94 Prelude (4th Gen). My engine light stays on. I took it to Honda for an engine light check ($48). It turned out that my 4 fuel injectors needs replacing as well as my EGR needing to be cleaned. The price to have it done at Honda is ($950). I'm assuming that's the combined price of the fuel injectors and EGR cleaning. Your price may be less if you don't need both done. Is your engine light on?

  • @ParadiseofTruth Sorry to take so long but in the end it ended up with a 600.00 egr clean and injector seals for another 100 bucks...CEL is off now.

  • @blackpowder911 the same amount you would pay for a new one

  • any ideas on what to do if this doesnt work? i did this repair a few days ago and yesterday my CEL came on again. it might not be the egr valve but if you have any advice thatd be great

    thanks

  • @thinkAPP1 is ur CEL reading a fix for the EGR valve? if it is, then the fix should work. its important to pull the code. i dont believe you are certain of what you're fixing. pull the code first.

  • Hi

    I got a question about a Honda Prelude 2.2 Vti 1998.

Basically i start the engine on and then remove the oil cap on the top of the engine and then I notice a strong air blow from the whole. Also there is no smoke from the same whole and also no smoke from the exhaust.

    What could it be?

    Thank you

  • dam dude, hold the cleaner can upright! Otherwise, your going to waste the fluid, by letting out all the pressurized air, that squirts the liquid out

  • @phillyry HE CANT IS CAUSE HE HAS GLOVES ON AN IS SCARED TO GET DIRTY LOL

  • are there 6 plugs that have to be replaced or 4? does the number have anything to do with the number of cylinders?

  • seem some leave the gunk "properly" shutting donw the passages

and fool the O2 sensor aplying a plug to it to make it get different readings and fuel adjustements

  • does it hurt my car bad if I keep riding with this problem unfixed

  • @LucLeFou i dont know if itll hurt the car, but it'll decrease ur gas mileage n throttle response i guess. some actually disconnect their egr cuz they think the egr reduces power output, but if u want to pass emissions in california, u gotta clean it. if ur not in ca, then i guess its okay

  • wait! if its efi use throttle body cleaner, not carb cleaner...er i think

  • But don't both remove carbon?

  • @DrkRonin03 some throttle bodies are coated and the solvents in the carb cleaner can dissolve the finish and ruin the throttle body.Haha, but if it works and does no harm then I don't see any problem with using it. cheers

  • @napafitpro

whats up man, i recently went to Honda to buy these plugs but they had no idea what they are. damn idiots. anyways, do you know how much the kit will cost?

  • u have to ask for "EGR Port Plugs" not sure how much a kit would cost

  • i did ask for EGR port plugs. even gave them the code for it but they still had no clue.

  • did you drill all the way through the port plugs or did you drill them part way and just tap them. I saw another write up for accords online saying he tapped part way just enough for the screw you use to work. He even reused the plugs but not sure how thick those plugs are. I have a 98 prelude SH. I cleaned out the EGR valve and also tried cleaning the passage ways without removing the plugs. I don't have a slide hammer either. Where you located? I'm in the bay area! HELP?! haha

  • Thanks for posting this video!

How important is it to pull the plugs and clean out that rail? Can I just clean out the EGR valve itself and leave the rest?

Also, where do you get the replacement port plugs and what are they called?

  • I've read that cleaning out the EGR valve itself doesn't always clear the P0401 code. cleaning the ports ensures a clear passage way.

try the valve first and see if the code clears then.

  • @napafitpro

yeah, you probably have to clear the code using an OBD-2 Computer. I'm glad to see that you found a "Vacuum Gun" at kragen too, i never thought to look there for one, and the only other places I looked for one wanted like 80$ for the damn thing! I DO need one (I have a lot of vacuum tubes on my 81 accord that need to be checked out) but I don't need a super fancy one! I'm trying to get it to pass smog and my troubles are EGR related.....

  • they're called "port plugs". i got them at the honda dealership. about 60 cents each.

  • Thanks a bunch, I found a post on Prelude Power titled "DIY Slide hammer for EGR port cleaning w/ pics" that was really helpful too. I will be doing this in the next couple of weeks.

  • where did you get that pressure gun

  • i got the pressure gun from Kragen. you can get it from any local autoparts store. roughly $20-30.

u dont need the pressure gun to raise the valve. it just makes it easier, but u can press it with ur finger to raise it to get more of the carbon deposits out
