I don't understand why the English love to mock their own traditions while showing reverence for those of other peoples. English folk song is often dismissed with jokes about "wack fol de rol" and other clichés, whereas Scottish, Irish & World music is usually treated with respect. I was pleased to find here the beautiful English traditional folk song, Geordie, sung in English by a Chinese singer from Taiwan. Perhaps folk music, like the biblical prophet, hath no honour in its own country.
Can someone tell me how its this typeof music called? I mean the serene guitars and other instruments, I'd love to hear this kinda music but music only without voices :P although this song is superb I find it hard to describe the music alone... this might be a perfect example for it, its like super serene... any particular music? title?
@Yinwea for more precision: this song was written in the XVIth century. And about Fabrizio De André, he also translated Attenti al Gorilla by Brassans, which is JUMBO too. Have a great day
What a truely beautiful version! What a wolnderous voice, beautiful tone, lovely soaring vibrato! Crystal clear vocals, very much like Joan Baez (my favourite folk singer)!
Are there more folk songs sung by Chyi or only this one?
WOW ! It's really amazing that this is sung by a Asian lady. If I would just listen to this song without knowing that a Asian lady is singing it I would really think it is CELTIC music sung by a CELTIC singer ! I listen to alot of Celtic music and this sounds just like Celtic music !
Chui Yu has the voice of an angel and I love this video shot in China (my guess). Amazing artist! I can't say ernough about her choice of music and her voice. Wow...I'm hooked!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS. Keep them coming as I search for her CDs and ask the music store to keep them in stock.
OMG i listened to the Joan Baez version after seeing yr comment.. Chyi 's version is so much more touching and poignant portrayal of a woman's pleadings for forgiveness for a person named Goerdie..
Joan Baez is truly a great song writer and I believe she would have been greatly moved by Chyi's singing of the song..
@uuduu7 - Geordie isn't the name of the person that she's singing to. A Geordie is a person who is born in Newcastle, or a person who lives in Newcastle.
sorry but i did not said Geordie is the person that the song is "singing to"..
I think its quite plainly clear that the song is about a first person's recount of meeting a heartbroken woman who is lamenting about an impending execution of her loved one named Geordie..
Chyi has always been able to remake a western classic into the asian context simply with her endearing singing..
Very unlike most current singers who appeals with overt vocal manipulation..
anyway, thanks for pointing out the definition of Geordie as referring to an ethnicity name..
somehow (i might be wrong) the way the name is used in the song indicates that "Geordie" is an affectionate nickname (and not to refer to the ethnicity of the person..)
@uuduu7 - uuduu7, thanks, but I've known (and sang) this song for 35 years, and do understand the storyteller's experience of recounting an encounter. I have to disrespectfully disagree that "Geordie" is a person's name. In the tradition of Child ballads, descriptions often served as names. Happy Holidays to you!
Bhe, sono due interpretazioni totalmente diverse, questa obiettivamente è molto doce (vocalmente parlando), sono entrambe molto belle secondo il mio modestissimo parere.
Although I am a Geordie, you may be right that the origins of this song lie in the tale of Lord George Gordon, who led an anti-Catholic riot in London in 1783. He converted to Judaism and eventually died in prison - from typhoid, not through being hanged.
If I may correct you both, it definetly is not a copy of De Andre's Geordie. The original is from Britain or Scotland, I am not completely sure about that, but this version is the older one.
Had some talent visit me in New Mexico from Newcastle Music School (Newcastle On Tyne) and those Sweet Lassies bested even this Right Fine Lady - 25 years ago like yesterday!
Excellent video and song. Do you have "Music of The Night" by Chyi ? I heard it from her classical album "Love of My life" and I think it's the best version around. Many of your listeners will greatly appreciate it.
Chyi is my favorate Chinese singer. I always feel her voice has the color of grey, elegant, mysterious and can purify our souls. She also sings some Buddhism scriptures, that's really the voice from heaven!
Thanks for the song.Chyi is always my long term favorite .I wonder if anybody have or ever listened to this song YOU GOT A NAIVE by CHYI OA ROD STEWART.
