Girl, I wish someone could unexpectedly find an entire trough of unreleased songs from The Smiths. Those two should've put their egos, or whatever, aside and given us more. Those few albums they released just wasn't enough. Shame on them for denying us a 20+ year career full of unforgettable music.
What a great song and what a great video, well done! This is one of several Smiths songs that is so matter-of-factly PERFECT that most of the world seems to have simply not noticed....
MY ASSHOLE X BF JUST MAILED ME THIS VIDEO TELLING ME HE CARE FOR ME EVEN IF I DONT THINK SO . WHAT A ASSHOLE USE MY BELOVED MOZ TO WRITE ME A LETTER. FUCK OFF RUSSEL1403 AN PISS OFF OUT OF MY LIFE.
@SIMONHOYOS Hmm... I feel that it must cause one a lot of anguish when it is evident no music in the world can match up to your own in whatever facet you may care to view it.
I ahm... appreciate ands these days such as Vampire Weekend but am ever conscious of their and other band's collective failure to match up to The Smiths.
The Smiths was both the rebirth and final death knell for my interest in music. What more can I say?..
i went to see THE CRIBS a couple months back, here in a tiny club in hollywood, wearing my JOHNNY MARR t shirt...when johnny looked down and saw it, he smiled broadly, gave me a thumbs up (whilst still playing!), and said "nice one mate!".
I was visiting England in 84 and went and saw Bronski Beat at the camden electric ballroom...the Smiths first album was played whole as the intro to the gig......I have been hooked ever since
Man, this has the throb and feel of excitement I witnessed in Athens, GA, US during the same time period. Funny how avant culture is the same across oceans.... Pylon, Tone Tones, The Smiths...
I would have loved to have seen REM at that time, Harborcoat has the same feel. I don't know much about the other Athens bands, but I am sure they were great as well.
Words cannot express the admiration and awe I have for what Johnny Marr was doing at such a young age. Barely into his 20s and writing the most memorable guitar songs I have ever heard.
khasperg, I could'nt agree with you more. Back To The Old House, Still Ill, This Charming Man, Reel Around The Fountain, Wonderful Women, all before the age of twenty. The little man had, has the best right hand in the business.
where was this song originally released... it used to be on a juke box in Whitley Bay as a b side until the pub was sanitised and naturally the song didn't survive ... class song
I love this. It's the Smiths without the polish...and it works. The fact that Morrissey's voice is rough to say the least only makes it...better. Don't ask me how that works, but it does. It might be something to do with stripping away the music to find the message, or it might be that I'm rambling and it's just a damn good song.
Well let me think. When people have a lot of time spare eg no family, hate the scene, cling to the bedroom, it unleashes sometimes an amazing artistry. I think every person from whatever, where ever has their own subjective take on things be it right or wrong. If someone wishes to interpret a song in a particular way thats the beauty of it. I think think this song has a magical quality of knowingness and my ideas are as valid as anyone elses. I don't mind if people think I'm wrong. Fine.
Thank you! I never know if people are being sarcy or genuinely nice so I shall take your comment in the best spirit. Sometimes its good to think, sometimes not. Anyway Jeane is a marvellous song, perhaps even one of the best of The Smiths.
Even though I donn't like The Manic Street Preachers one of their comment was 'All rock is homosexual.' I think I agree particularly if its cutting edge a bit away from what ever else is going on and marginal. Kind of like The Smiths when they very first came out.
This a surprise, i remember i had bought a bootleg K7 in Camdem town in 1986 and this song appeared on it but i had almost forgotten it, thanks for the souvenir
What about those dodgy b-sides to girlfriend in a coma. Cilla black my arse. Dreadfuuuulll. Johnny was right. lol But apart from them, I agree. Flawless.
@Morrisseyisdead No way thats one of e faves of that album! /Cuz thers sum one here who'd take a hatchet to your ear/ with lyrics like that, if one I'm not keen on is 'Golden lights'
No 'Death at ones Elbow' is a mess of a track. Even Johnny Marr admitted they went overboard with too many production effects in it, you know a song is not very good when it starts off with the noise of a drill followed by trumpets.
Saying that I actully liked 'Golden Lights' the last minute of it is quite beautiful.
My personal favourite is their self-titled debut, it's definately the most dark album and it touches harrowing subject matters that they never touched again.
@Morrisseyisdead True that! with THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE & SUFFER LIL CHILDREN, I Love MEAT IS MURDER cuz every single track is a diff music styal,ie first track GARAGE Rock then to Rockabillie to country & western to Pyscadelic, Funk & Soul & pure expiremental for the the track meat is murder! I wish they bring out the TORY TATE version of the First album!
incredible song, one of their very finest, the lyrics are raw and brillant, and the melody is fantastic. "jeane,im not sure wat happiness means, but i look in ur eyes and i know that it isnt there..."
I wonder why this song was never on any of the thousand Smiths compilations that came out (or was it?). Great song.
