I think when a religious person tells me i "believe" in evolution, they actually mean if i have faith, and i dont have faith in evolution, in my opinion, faith and belief arent the same, you can believe something, but not have faith in it because i think faith has more of a religious connotation, where as belief has a more.. idk.. statistical connotation. @chrism4n14 That is why I do my best to remember to use the phrase "I accept" rather than "I believe in" when talking about evolution specifically and scientific theories in general.
@velourea Words can have many meanings, to me, belief is having a feeling that something is a certain way, not necessarily true (meaning belief in something =/= knowledge, example, when I was young i believed there was a creeper in my closet, but now i know it isnt true) Believing basically means you have a feeling. If someone asks you for the time, but aren't quite 100% sure on it, you'd say either you didnt know or "I believe around 4PM" saying believe means you don't know for sure
@velourea That was kind of a poor explanation on what I believe the word belief means... but hey, you can only get so much information across in 500 characters...

I do, though, want to say that I'm glad you started narrating them...you do images very well, but I'm here for what you're saying. Thanks for this series.
I agree with the Christians when they say you can't be a Christian and accept evolution. While the bible doesn't outright state an age of the earth, it's impossible to reconcile Genesis with 4.5 billion YO earth and a 15 billion YO universe. What about the soul? At what stage in human evolution did we acquire it? Since individuals don't evolve, there was no first human,, only a population that could be called human. It takes too much mental gymnastics to make this work.
On behalf of troglodytes, I wish you wouldn't drag us into this squabble. Otherwise I am glad you're doing what you do. I admire your craft. In a word: thanks.
Once you take Genesis as a metaphor, then the act of original sin becomes one too. Then what value does the notion of original sin have to a Christian? Then what value does Christianity have to a Christian when one of its tenets is purely vapour?
There are creationist atheists. Raelians and Buddhists (depending on the Buddhist) both fit this category. Depending on the theological definition of what constitutes a god, spiritualists and other aboriginal religions from the Americas and Australia may also qualify.
This actually makes your argument stronger, which is why I bring it up. Great video.
Great series! I hate when I hear theists say that all atheists accept evolution, or that it turns people to atheism. During my transition from Xstian to atheist, I didn't accept evolution, because I was still under the same limited, ignorant mindset that I was as a believer. It wasn't until after I stopped believing in gods that I decided I had avoided science long enough, and finally read about evolution, and came to understand it. It made me so angry to know I was lied to all those years!
I think, contrary to some others, that the Balancing between your Voice and the Music is superb. I can understand every word, and yet enjoy the Music.
your videos are so cogent that i'm starting to find them frustrating as i cant understand how creationist types are not instantly moved to at the very least go back to the books and start again
If you had asked an atheist 300 years agohow the world was created he probably would have said that god did it. The believers had a lot more power then and any atheist would have been too intelligent to say anything other than 'god did it'. People who did not believe in god at that time had a pretty bad time of things at the hands of the pious cretins who ran things. Other than that, I agree with everything you said.
Thank you very much for giving me the name of the Mozart work featured in HH1 ( Koechel 7 ).
Biology is not my specialty ( my degrees are in physics) but I do wish to offer a small insight you might want to consider in future videos. When creationists claim Christianity and evolution are incompatible, please mention Dr. Robert T. Bakker, an eminent paleontologist , is also an ordained Pentecostal minister.
Of course, he's not a bible literalist like these fuckards.
@LoopQuantumGravity1 NP. As for Robert Bakker, I am aware of him. As it happens I was watching a show on dinosaur extinction with my kids a few nights ago that featured him! You're right though, I should perhaps use him as an example.
@LoopQuantumGravity1 Not only Baker, but Kenneth Miller, perhaps the best example, in my opinion, of a biologist christian that accepts evolution completely, and actively fights against creationism and intelligent design.
I love those phylogenetic representations at 1:04 and 1:34. Where could I find those? I hope there is a poster or something. Could anyone point me in the right direction?
I honestly like both styles...the voice and just the text. Reading all the text with the lovely images in the background was, well in a matter of speaking, 'exciting for my eyes'.
Either way, your videos are brilliant, educating and even funny (with your remarks to people you are replying to). I really enjoy these videos =) and your direct approach to explaining the scientific facts.
9:55 I have to disagree with you there. Atheism means lack of belief in a god. It can be of rational reasons and irrational. There can be atheists who are atheists because elf whispered it to their ear while they were asleep.
In response to the "Athiesm that beleives in something other than evolution argument".
I actually met an athiest once who beleived the biodiversity on earth was due to aliens coming every few thousand years and genetically altering the currently existing animals into new forms.
I asked him why they do that and he said he beleived that they did it because the Earth was like a nature reserve/holiday resort to them, and they liked to update the scenery.
@passwordresetisbroke When I asked him where the aliens had come from he tried to deflect, with some persistance until my continued questioning caused him to threaten me and then storm out of the room (possibly building as I didnt see him again after that)
This man struck me as somewhat mentally unhinged, but still its a viewpoint for an athiest other than I dont know or Evolution :D
@passwordresetisbroke i think those people are called xianists or something like that. and while they may fit in the category of atheist because they don't have a god i still don't consider them as such. all they did was change god to aliens and instead of life being poofed into existence it was made by advanced technology. which is still basically the same thing because there is no evidence that they did that just like there is no evidence that a good poofed everything into being.
@xynth101088 oh and buddists would fit in the same category as xianists as well, since they dont have a god either even though they still have a religion.
I'm starting the church of atheism, anyone up for it? The 'CoA' believes the universe was created when Darwin sexually assaulted one of his birds. I'll be pope. Oh, and you have to pay me £5 to get in.
@TheLiviingDinosaur I just discovered these videos and am in awe at your craftsmanship and wit in putting them together. They are educational and highly entertaining! By the way, can I ask what the image starting at about 9:10 in HH5 which shows a pictorial evolutionary "family tree"? It's wonderful and I'd like to find whatever reference that diagram is from. Thanks!
To tell you the truth, I think that fundamentalist creationists are far more honest and genuine when it comes to their believes and also emotionally more healthy although deluded without question, when you compare them to “moderate or liberal” Christians/religious people. At least they don’t have to compartmentalise their minds to defend part of their belief from the rational aspect of their mind, since they have none. Thus they don’t behave like schizophrenics.
@eldadevata Unlike “moderate” religious people, who indeed are forced by their own miserable compulsion to split their own minds in to a mosaic like shape, where one magisterial does not overlap with the other. I find these people far worse than the fundamentalists, far more dishonest and far more dangerous as they are in the majority, and they can fool even the rational people.
@eldadevata Very often rational people act as apologists for moderate religious people, who in turn act as apologists for the dogma that supports the fundamentalist belief system.
Hurray for the voiceover! I'd been waiting for that as I watched your videos. It's much better this way, for multitasking, as has been said. And it adds more "personality" to a channel, which in my experience makes people (at least me) more likely to subscribe).
Subscribed after seeing this & other videos of yours. Hands down the best arguments on youtube so far. And the patience in responding to those videos, priceless! I actually envy those qualities of yours a lil' bit... ;-)
'I dont know' is the driving force behind all gains in knowledge. When you think you have the answer, you stop looking. I dont see whats so scary about this.
i know that i'm new to you're channel, but i like the voice over more then the text. I myself am not a fast reader, and sometime i find it hard to read with things moving in the backround.
For the voice or text question (which was likely answered a while ago) I prefer the voice. Its quicker, more detailed, and allows me to multi-task if I must, such as text chat to people.
Also, much as I hate to play the devil advocate (really ;)), where does the 30, 000 denominations number come from originally?
It is a number I have often heard in many videos, but I have never seen the source. I don't doubt that it could be that high, considering the number of one church denominations, but I still wonder about the root of this particular number :P
"where does the 30, 000 denominations number come from originally?"
I'm pretty sure that the 30k figure comes from the 2001 edition of David Barrett's rather ambitious 'World Christian Encyclopedia' which documents almost 34k denominations of Christianity, but more recent figures such as those from the Gordon-Conwell World Christian Database put that figure at closer to 40k.
Superlative! Outstanding graphics accompanying closely-reasoned text. I just discovered you thanx to RhymeMaiden & cant believe i missed you before; will now be eagerly consuming your other videos.
There is no necessary connection between atheism & ANY naturalistic explanations, including evolution, IF we propose a god who is simply creator/ sustainer of the world. But if we posit a deity who actively intervenes in the world, such a god is incompatible with ALL of science, not merely evolution.
narration is going to be easier to consume because as you noted, text covers SOME part of the screen, looks like crap if it's too long, what font to choose????? etc.
Narration FTW! Besides, if that was your voice I heard on Claire's shoutout, you kill at narration. English accents give most Americans a huge chubby.
@unixhead101 Thanks, and also for the sub. The accent is a mish-mash. Grew up in South Wales, Lived in London and the SE for about 10 years and now been in the States for the same, so take your pick.
@TheLivingDinosaur Yes that is a mish-mash. I picked up a bit of London and states, but completely missed the Wales connection. Born and bred in East London myself, but lived in North Wales for the last eight. I don't speak Welsh, but...
@TheLivingDinosaur Great narration job.I thought your accent was a mixture of SE and some other,I wouldn't have picked Wales though. It is an asset for the narration I think.
Where in the SE did you live,if you don't mind me asking?I lived in Sittingbourne Kent before moving to Oz.
Because you wrote that this was an experiment for you I cast my vote for narration over text. Easier to digest the information while looking at the pretty images and makes the video that much more personal.
@JamesThWilliams Indeed there are. However, the scientific position is the only one that allows us to make reliable ,predictions about how the world will behave and so is at least more like to reflect some aspect of the underlying reality. If science never discovers the nature of that reality, the other options will remain as they currently are - untestable, unprovable yet intriguing speculations that are either equally valid or invalid.
What I was referring to is that being an atheist is irrelevent as to whether a person relies on logic or not. However atheists are much more likely to use logic than the average believer, certainly when considering literalists.
@draagon66 I wish - I always thought that was a great accent. Actually I grew up in South Wales (which is fairly accent neutral), spent 10 or so years in London and the Southeast and the last 10 years in the States, so you may be picking up a mix of crap. Thanks again for the sub!
Accent neutral? South Wales? I am from Pontypridd and I have to disagree about the neutrality. You should hear my sister, who lives in Treforest. Then there's Tom Jones, who still carries the local accent after all those years away. There is a very odd similarity between S/Wales and Tyneside that sometimes throws me - as it evidently has done here.
I think I prefer the narrated ones to the text ones inasmuch as you can say more. Plus, you have a nice speaking voice; the accent is a plus too because we Americans are enamored of them. Oh, nice work smuggling in the pentacoltalist bit. That was cheeky. ^_^
@TheLivingDinosaur: well, cheers to that. I look forward to your next contribution, and thank you for putting so much care and attention into expressing your thoughts.
@ZangaroZen You realize you're not blocked anymore and you can actually comment on my videos again? No need to comment on other people's video threads. I won't delete/block you.
@eagleeye1975, real libertarian support of free speech versus hypocrites that censor or block others is clearly explained on my channel page. You fall in the latter category of those that censor even the mildest of critiques.
You say "I won't delete/block you", but you've done so to many others, and so your guarantee is worthless until you unblock all those you've censored. Until then feel free to answer my last post here, your channel or where ever.
@ZangaroZen I have actually unblocked everyone... I don't intend on blocking anyone again, unless they are automated/spammer types.
As far as you dictating what a "real libertarian" is... I'm not sure I agree that any blocking of anyone constitutes censorship. Freedom of speech does not imply freedom of forum.
@eagleeye1975, you claim "have actually unblocked everyone", is very hard to believe without a screen shot of your block list.
You claim "not sure I agree that any blocking of anyone constitutes censorship. Freedom of speech does not imply freedom fo forum", a fine excuse for a rabid censor.
Read my channel page note on censorship. "The overwelming majority consider YouTube to be, by default, a free speech forum open to ALL feedback", otherwise honestly state your view restrictions UPFRONT.
@eagleeye1975, won't get any PM that you send (check your sent folder), as I returned your block and blocked you in kind, as per my channel page policy.
If you're being honest about ditching your past catering to specific views for a libertarian open free speech forum, and have really unblocked the many 100s of people you've blocked before, then make a video stating that and show your block list. Nothing wrong with a change of heart, anyone would respect such actions.
Make his head explode. Explain ring species to him. It will blow the fucktard out of the water (assuming he's smart enough to empty piss out of his shoe if you tell him the instructions are on the sole).
@bdf2718 The trouble with that is that all he'd say is 'That's just change. It's still a salamander or gull or whatever.' I make these things not because I expect to change these idiots' minds, but to try and dilute some of the stupid and to help stop it spreading to someone who hasn't been infected. Having said that, I actually have a soft spot for this particular specimen, probably because he is less arrogant than most. Compare him to mysticalforest (who is a complete and utter twat).
Yeah, he'd say it's still a salamander or a gull. But he'd have to admit that the two ends are different species. Nuke one of the intermediates and you have a speciation event. Speciation over distance rather than speciation over time.
At least it would give him a headache, and that has to be a good thing.
@bdf2718 He would probably admit that they were new species, but would then say that they were the same 'kind', or 'grouping' to use his new word. That's why they never define it, because that way they can always shift the goalposts when you produce new evidence. Anyway, ring species are a great example, and I'll be sure to use them when the opportunity arises. I was two minutes over the limit as it was on this one and so had to cut some of the points I wanted to make to get it under 11 min.

@eldadevata Unlike “moderate” religious people, who indeed are forced by their own miserable compulsion to split their own minds in to a mosaic like shape, where one magisterial does not overlap with the other. I find these people far worse than the fundamentalists, far more dishonest and far more dangerous as they are in the majority, and they can fool even the rational people.
eldadevata 1 year ago
@eldadevata Very often rational people act as apologists for moderate religious people, who in turn act as apologists for the dogma that supports the fundamentalist belief system.

Hurray for the voiceover! I'd been waiting for that as I watched your videos. It's much better this way, for multitasking, as has been said. And it adds more "personality" to a channel, which in my experience makes people (at least me) more likely to subscribe).

Subscribed after seeing this & other videos of yours. Hands down the best arguments on youtube so far. And the patience in responding to those videos, priceless! I actually envy those qualities of yours a lil' bit... ;-)

i know that i'm new to you're channel, but i like the voice over more then the text. I myself am not a fast reader, and sometime i find it hard to read with things moving in the backround.

well, obviously your video is false because people who make videos are actually Tomato people, and all Tomato people are liars. Case dismissed

For the voice or text question (which was likely answered a while ago) I prefer the voice. Its quicker, more detailed, and allows me to multi-task if I must, such as text chat to people.
Do like you vids, keep up the fab work :)

Also, much as I hate to play the devil advocate (really ;)), where does the 30, 000 denominations number come from originally?
It is a number I have often heard in many videos, but I have never seen the source. I don't doubt that it could be that high, considering the number of one church denominations, but I still wonder about the root of this particular number :P
theretard666 1 year ago
@theretard666

@theretard666 No-one voted to keep the captions, so it looks like the voice is heare to stay. Thanks for the feedback and the kind words.

But if we posit a deity who actively intervenes in the world, such a god is incompatible with ALL of science, not merely evolution.
owlcowl 1 year ago
narration is going to be easier to consume because as you noted, text covers SOME part of the screen, looks like crap if it's too long, what font to choose????? etc.
Narration FTW! Besides, if that was your voice I heard on Claire's shoutout, you kill at narration. English accents give most Americans a huge chubby.
TruthSurge 1 year ago
@TruthSurge crap. hahah this is the same vis as Claire's shoutout. hahahha doh.
So, narration definitely. good vid!

That's one of the most gracious "bitch slaps" I've seen. Very well done sir.
Your accent! where is it from? I keep almost getting it... then, urgh! It's gone again.
Subbed, of course, and my thanks to Claire.
unixhead101 1 year ago
@unixhead101 Thanks, and also for the sub. The accent is a mish-mash. Grew up in South Wales, Lived in London and the SE for about 10 years and now been in the States for the same, so take your pick.
TheLivingDinosaur 1 year ago
@TheLivingDinosaur Yes that is a mish-mash. I picked up a bit of London and states, but completely missed the Wales connection. Born and bred in East London myself, but lived in North Wales for the last eight. I don't speak Welsh, but...
lloniannau!
unixhead101 1 year ago
@TheLivingDinosaur Great narration job.I thought your accent was a mixture of SE and some other,I wouldn't have picked Wales though. It is an asset for the narration I think.
Where in the SE did you live,if you don't mind me asking?I lived in Sittingbourne Kent before moving to Oz.

Because you wrote that this was an experiment for you I cast my vote for narration over text. Easier to digest the information while looking at the pretty images and makes the video that much more personal.

Some atheists may believe that there is no proof the world is any more than an imagination. There are many atheist positions regarding the world.
JamesThWilliams 1 year ago
@JamesThWilliams Indeed there are. However, the scientific position is the only one that allows us to make reliable ,predictions about how the world will behave and so is at least more like to reflect some aspect of the underlying reality. If science never discovers the nature of that reality, the other options will remain as they currently are - untestable, unprovable yet intriguing speculations that are either equally valid or invalid.
TheLivingDinosaur 1 year ago
@TheLivingDinosaur
What I was referring to is that being an atheist is irrelevent as to whether a person relies on logic or not. However atheists are much more likely to use logic than the average believer, certainly when considering literalists.
JamesThWilliams 1 year ago
@JamesThWilliams I 100% agree.

Do I detect a whiff of the Tyne in there somewhere?
Also - I much prefer the narrated version.
Great work.
draagon66 1 year ago
@draagon66 I wish - I always thought that was a great accent. Actually I grew up in South Wales (which is fairly accent neutral), spent 10 or so years in London and the Southeast and the last 10 years in the States, so you may be picking up a mix of crap. Thanks again for the sub!
TheLivingDinosaur 1 year ago
@TheLivingDinosaur
Anyway - great to have found you and your output.
Kit, Manila, Philippines.
draagon66 1 year ago
I think I prefer the narrated ones to the text ones inasmuch as you can say more. Plus, you have a nice speaking voice; the accent is a plus too because we Americans are enamored of them. Oh, nice work smuggling in the pentacoltalist bit. That was cheeky. ^_^

@eagleeye1975, just watched your educational update video. How is that:
1. A big "libertarian" such as yourself only aspires to be a BIG GOVERNMENT employee, a middle grade teacher?
2. Why does a big "libertarian" such as yourself rely and require government substitudies to get his degree?
3. Why did it take you from 2005 until 2013, that's 8 full years without working a job, to earn your degree?
ZangaroZen 3 months ago
@ZangaroZen You realize you're not blocked anymore and you can actually comment on my videos again? No need to comment on other people's video threads. I won't delete/block you.
eagleeye1975 3 months ago
@eagleeye1975, real libertarian support of free speech versus hypocrites that censor or block others is clearly explained on my channel page. You fall in the latter category of those that censor even the mildest of critiques.
You say "I won't delete/block you", but you've done so to many others, and so your guarantee is worthless until you unblock all those you've censored. Until then feel free to answer my last post here, your channel or where ever.
ZangaroZen 3 months ago
@ZangaroZen I have actually unblocked everyone... I don't intend on blocking anyone again, unless they are automated/spammer types.
As far as you dictating what a "real libertarian" is... I'm not sure I agree that any blocking of anyone constitutes censorship. Freedom of speech does not imply freedom of forum.
eagleeye1975 3 months ago
@eagleeye1975, you claim "have actually unblocked everyone", is very hard to believe without a screen shot of your block list.
You claim "not sure I agree that any blocking of anyone constitutes censorship. Freedom of speech does not imply freedom fo forum", a fine excuse for a rabid censor.
Read my channel page note on censorship. "The overwelming majority consider YouTube to be, by default, a free speech forum open to ALL feedback", otherwise honestly state your view restrictions UPFRONT.
ZangaroZen 3 months ago
@ZangaroZen *shrug*... I sent you a PM that you are free to reply to.
eagleeye1975 3 months ago
@eagleeye1975, won't get any PM that you send (check your sent folder), as I returned your block and blocked you in kind, as per my channel page policy.
If you're being honest about ditching your past catering to specific views for a libertarian open free speech forum, and have really unblocked the many 100s of people you've blocked before, then make a video stating that and show your block list. Nothing wrong with a change of heart, anyone would respect such actions.
ZangaroZen 3 months ago
It's funny... I listen to most of my subscriptions on my iPhone at work, and I skipped this one today, because I knew you only did text videos...
Nice job with the dialogue by the way. A welcome change.

Make his head explode. Explain ring species to him. It will blow the fucktard out of the water (assuming he's smart enough to empty piss out of his shoe if you tell him the instructions are on the sole).
bdf2718 1 year ago
@bdf2718 The trouble with that is that all he'd say is 'That's just change. It's still a salamander or gull or whatever.' I make these things not because I expect to change these idiots' minds, but to try and dilute some of the stupid and to help stop it spreading to someone who hasn't been infected. Having said that, I actually have a soft spot for this particular specimen, probably because he is less arrogant than most. Compare him to mysticalforest (who is a complete and utter twat).
TheLivingDinosaur 1 year ago
@TheLivingDinosaur
Yeah, he'd say it's still a salamander or a gull. But he'd have to admit that the two ends are different species. Nuke one of the intermediates and you have a speciation event. Speciation over distance rather than speciation over time.
At least it would give him a headache, and that has to be a good thing.
bdf2718 1 year ago
@bdf2718 He would probably admit that they were new species, but would then say that they were the same 'kind', or 'grouping' to use his new word. That's why they never define it, because that way they can always shift the goalposts when you produce new evidence. Anyway, ring species are a great example, and I'll be sure to use them when the opportunity arises. I was two minutes over the limit as it was on this one and so had to cut some of the points I wanted to make to get it under 11 min.
