Did you bore a large port hole in the bottom? Do you use magnets, or a dampener of some sort inside? Do you cut the legs longer to get the right tone? And lastley, where is your link to ebay so I can buy one from you should I not be able to make my own. Ive heard others who have followed the same

And lastley, where is your link to ebay so I can buy one from you should I not be able to make my own. Ive heard others who have followed the same instructions & yours sounds better than any of them. I live about 4 hrs from the inventor - maybe I should go see him.. Thank you & great job
@theliftedloraxshow i used his instructions to tune,. but also used a tuner from making a PVC flute. Look up tuner.e.zip . after that, i searched for note frequency so i knew how many hertz i was aiming for to tune. then you just cut slowly.
People, People!! In the video, I say "my drum" --I mean, "my drum" as in the one that I am making... This is the beautiful work of Dennis Havlena who is awesome. Please find his videos (they are great) and from there you can link to Dennis's site and instructions.
Question Chris, what size dremel discs are you using and what size metal blades on the jigsaw? My blades are small, but I can't get quite the arch on them and end up outside my template lines.
@GalitUnggoy Oh thank God, a answerable question... The dremel discs are the good ones --the ones that are reinforced with "grid" of fiberglass. They are thicker than the cheap ones and they match the thickness of the jigsaw blade. The blades I use are regular Bosch fine tooth metal cutting. Push down hard when you cut and remember to "steer from the back of the saw" --don't point the nose where you want to go, rotate the back of the saw to "steer".
the part I'd be worried about (with a used tank) is getting that valve unscrewed. after that, just fill the tank with water and leave it overnight should make it safe.....
no fucking way...i want one...id cut a limb off making this thing... man..how much do you sell them for? i am mesmerized by the sound of these instruments and you should definitely sell me one.
Im from Slovakia, and i want to make my own hank drum. Can you please tell me what are the parameters of single panels, and when i made the instrument, how i can tune it? Thank you for your answer!
jygattozzi mentioned bungee cords on it. where did that come from?...
IS THERE A STANDARD ORDER FOR THE NOTE PLACEMENT AROUND THE DRUM? WHAT ARE THE ORDER OF THE NOTE PLACEMENTS. IS THERE A "RULE OF THUMB" TEMPLATE FOR THE TUNG CUTTING? PLEASE RESPOND!!!!!
hey im in the process of making mine right now but u can find non filled tanks at places like osh , home depot , and lowes or places like that. i made one from a used tank but dont do it because like he said you have to know how to purge it.its not the hard part, getting the valve out and tuning are hard though . hope this helped!
Finally, cheers Chris, for posting this. I needed some visuals to follow Dennis' instructions. This is a great tutorial, and I don't know how long it would have taken me otherwise. So thank you Chris! Awesome tutorial.
Nice video showing the technique of getting everything apart, but I would've liked to have seen a bit more explanation on the musical end of things, ie, placement of tabs, tuning, yadayadayada.
That being said, good video, excellent sounding drum (one of the best hanks I've heard), 5 stars.
Ok I have an Important question. You see Im very cheap and I dont want to pay 45 bucks for a new tank, so in order to take out all the gas out of a used tank, would it work if I took off the valve thing and filled the tank with water as to push out all the gas?
Well, I have made one from a used one, and my method of purging was to take the empty tank, and sit it in a bin of water with the valve open, weighted down with rocks, and as it took in the water, refil the bin until no more "bluhp, bluhp" sound. I then sat it upside down and very carefully with a hand powered drill (you know the old ones with the handle that turns the drive shaft) I pierced the base and the water hame rushing out filling the tank with good clean air.
Having said that, I would still be very, very, very, very careful! I don't want anyone blowing themselves up on account of my comment here so, if you aint sure... get a new one!!!!
Thank you for posting this, they do have a wonderful sound. I am wondering if you could spare a sec and PM or post your purge methods, I am thinkinking that soap and water would do the trick but dunno and am curious.
Also, do you open up the bottoms? And have you tried cutting larger tongues in the sides for bass notes (like would it work?)
5star production and for giving credit to the origional creator :)
Buddy, first of all nice tutorial! Never heard one of these babies sounding so well!
I would like to know if there is a way to safely empty a used propane tank (BEFORE cutting it, of course). A used one must be far cheaper to a first try. Would be safe to open the valve and wait the tank to be emptied and then screw off the valve?
don't these drums get out of tune when it's very cold or warm? and does the tune only depend on the size of the pads? or also on the postion... the angle (which may be changed accidentally by hitting very strongly(?)). I also want to build one, but if I can't use it anymore after 3 weeks, the work is not worth it for me. Soo please help me ;)
Well thanks, but all the credit goes to Dennis Havlena -He invented these and gave us all the instructions. -I do sell one on ebay from time to time if my shop or paint booth is getting cluttered but I'm really not in it to make any money, I just love making and painting these cool drums.
Hi Chris - Dennis Havlena here (these things are my invention) You've done it right! Great tuning and all! I have full instructions for building and tuning this instrument on my webpage - Google my last name, havlena, & my webpage will pop right up. Cheers, Dennis
