  • Wear your leather jacket, and spread your arms wide up to the sun, while all the city baggers and square suits shuffle by.

  • Hello? How about an interesting discourse? I rpely with LOL or a NICE comment because there are VERY angry, strange & judgemental people who seem to take EVERYTHING as an attack against them. I'm finding EVERYWHERE online. Not looking for ANY TROBLE:)

  • @asburyparkangel You are actually the judgemental one. All I asked was why you commented "LOL", and not "Can you please teach me about how people act on the internet?" I was in no way trying to make any trouble, and I was not taking the comment as an attack against me, as the comment was to this video, and not a reply to any of my comments. But you are of course right, people DO get rather angry on the internet in no longer than 2 seconds. Disgusting, really.

  • @asburyparkangel my lovely maple hue:) WOW... I am getting seriously ill with these seizures. My eyes & hands are getting shaky, anyway, I must have replied in the wrong spot. I was addressing that HARD ROCK guy, (as many others that I've met here online who make fun of acoustic music or female singer-songwriters. especially on CRAIGSLIST guys are REALLY men. this comment was NOT in response to you. BUT that's okay. people with seizures deserve to be rebuked when they respond in wrong spots!

  • @asburyparkangel Ah alright, I just assumed it was for me, as it was just after the comment where I asked why you said "lol" :)

  • Such chill music

  • LOL.

  • @asburyparkangel Why "LOL"?

  • what a beautiful, simple elegant song

  • Happy Birthday Michael

  • Man, a piece of me broke when I heard the news. He was barely in his 40s; can you imagine his music in his 50s, 60s? He would have continued to evolve the guitar beyond what we could imagine. The flame that burns brightest burns shortest...

  • Keller Williams wrote song about Hedges that is awesome called "Not of this World." It's on his album that he did with String Cheese Incident playing as his backing band, named "Breathe." Check it out.

  • There will NEVER be a better guitarist than this man. EVER!!!

  • I'm crying.

  • Eu amo essa música! so beautiful!

  • This song is perfection. Period.

I do not regret many things in my life, but until my dying day I will regret that I never saw Michael Hedges live. This song always reminds me of just how special that would have been.

  • We miss you Michael... R.I.P ---- PS: Hummer. Someday you'll swallow your pride and communicate laterally.. with people you've chosen as your friends... instead of talking down to them. Someday... maybe

  • I get chills from this song.

  • Maan. Is this from the Live On The Double Planet performance? It sounds just like that recording.

  • @htaylormusic I'm almost 100% sure of it, Live in Double Planet.

  • @htaylormusic yeah it's the same performance.... maybe a little bit more compressed mix for TV

  • @htaylormusic I have this video , Windham Hill live

  • Liked and saved to Favourites. Love it.

  • @darbyHash It's a matter of taste... to me it's normal... You're not obligated to like his works, as I'm not obligated to get on well with Black Metal ;-) But you did well recognizing his talent.

  • @nukebass I love both Michael Hedges and black metal. I don't think Michael Hedges should be hard to get into, even though this song is nothing transcendant compared to some of his other works.

  • Wowzers!!!!!!!!

What music are you in to then. To find Michael Hedges Boring is just bizarres to me.

He was brilliant. I guess it's just opinon, but my opinion is that you have no ears. sorry dude.

  • @darbyHash The dorian shifts in the verse are sick. The contour of the melody lands in a predictable spot (the 3rd of the bVI) in an unpredictable way, coming from a Im6. The unisons + parallel 10ths are a great color on the guitar. Do you disagree with any of those statements? If so, what kind of resolutions do you like?

  • @jazzpsalti

You can break it down, dissect the core, split the atoms and analyze every nuance: Michael Hedges is still the musical equivalent to TYLENOL PM.

By the way, I watched your guitar video and I'm genuinely more entertained watching you play than watching anything Hedges....What more can I say, Hedges just doesn't move me.

  • @darbyHash well you didn't answer my question... if you can't talk intellectually about music, I don't know if you can ascertain any qualification to dis Michael Hedges. Then again, this IS the youtube comments section, and, that said, we're all in the peanut gallery at this point, especially if we are criticizing people who have enjoyed fame beyond our understanding. I'm glad you enjoyed my music, though :)

  • @jazzpsalti

I didn't enjoy your music at all. It was entertaining for a moment - like a monkey juggling. You want an "intellectual" explanation as to why I find Hedges' music boring? I don't owe you that. I bet you scare women away with your obsession for detailed explanations. Your next reply will go like this: "You still didn't appeal to my 'intellectual' youtube persona and answer my question! That proves you don't know ANYTHING about music! Your opinion is not valid blah blah on and on..."

  • @darbyHash LOL WOW

  • @jazzpsalti Man, I wish I knew music theory like that! You need to teach me man!

  • @darbyHash How could this bore anyone, it amaze's me, Oh well, i guess your alone darby, your comment is the first negative comment I've ever read on Hedges, and Ive read a lot! of comments and watched a lot! of hedges videos.

i feel sorry for you, you must have incredibly bad taste, I'd hate to be in your shoes, but i suppose everyone is entitled to own opinion.

  • @darbyHash You can't expect much from an acoustic ballad & it certainly can't compare to a dance hit, .ballsy rocker or uplifting anthem. That's why this is a LOVE ballad. I'm a performer AND songwriter & an aficionado. There are ALL types of music & styles. MICHAEL HEDGES is a transcendent gift. Have you tried playing some of his melodies or understood his chordal structures?

  • @asburyparkangel No. I'm under the limited impression that the only musical genres are dance hits, ballsy rockers, and uplifting anthems.

  • @darbyHash Hey man...at least you tried.

  • Respond to this video...Met him in 1991-a gentleman and a genius.Thank you for posting this.

  • @darbyHash yeah...I understand your point...with me it's the thing, that I get so hypnotized and soothed by his voice and sound of his guitar, plus the lyrics...it's just like...contemplating...:)

  • Words can not express my deep passion for this mans music. Honestly, I'm sad I discovered him after his death. I feel like maybe having one chance to spend even 10 minutes with a man who can produce something as deep and intricate as this must feel like a blessing. I've never been able to listen to a song, and feel so enraptured and engulfed by so much emotion as I have with this one song. RIP

  • I saw him live, about 3 rows back from the stage about 87 or 88.... what a talent. I was left speechless.

  • This is pure beauty. It does'nt get any better than this. 25 years later and this song moves me like the 1st time I heard it.

  • when i want people to get into michael hedges, this is what i show them.

  • To me, this applies to all women, but especially Mother Earth.

  • thanks for posting this. i hear him and feel lucky we got to hear him at all, rather than lament his death. it's all good, ya know.

  • No one knows anyone but this is beautiful for everyone and all women

  • Still my favorite song by Michael!

  • I´ve never heard a good guitarrist singing so good, he was amazing

  • RIP!!!!!! Will see you up there... (I hope_)

  • someone tell youtube that the view count is off by about 5 zeros

  • hehehe indeed.... ahh well, I guess Hedges's music is only to be appreciated by a lucky few :D

  • I wait on the beach...

  • ...

  • There's such an infinite amount of emotion in this, I have no words for it so I'll shut up and enjoy.

    Michael, you're the best!

  • I heard Michael Hedges for the first time on Windham Hill Label in 1992 approx. I knew that he was pretty talented, but I didn't realize at the time what an amazing talent he is until rediscovering him here at you tube last year.

    WOW!

  • He is an ANGEL from GOD, His Legacy will live forever, Listen to how deep His Soul is!! ONLY a TRUE ANGEL can be this DEEP!!! I will See You In HEAVEN!!

  • Wow. Nicely done, Christopher.

  • Amazing...and not just the guitar playing!

  • Michael is so inspirational to so many people. You can always see his true heart feelings in the way he sings and plays. He is an amazing person whom I miss very much! You will always be remembered Michael.........

  • To me this sings of Mother Earth.

    A truly beautiful song.

    Thankyou Michael

A very special musical offering indeed !!

  • This is what inspires people to play an instrument. Incredible originality, incredidible talent. Gone way too soon, thanks for your eternal gift Michael.

  • I too saw (many times) Michael at The Varsity Theater in Palo Alto. 2 bucks, Wow and such a beautiful and kind person. One day I went into the 7 Eleven just off University Ave. Michael was in there he had a copy of guitar player magizine he said excitedly "I'm on the cover of Guitar Player Magazine !" (It was Michael's 30th birthday.) He was very real. I must have seen him play 50 times seen then. I miss him.

  • Ty for sharing this Jeff .. <3

  • thanks for the upload on this ♫♪♫

  • i was there when micheal was starting out before windam hill at the new varsity threater in palo alto. he was a great and NICE person. down to earth and just super cool to young musicians. i miss him in this world.

  • Mind blowing.

  • I have respect for Al Di Meola , Uli Jon Roth and Michael Hedges!Only these 3 . I always put this song on repeat!! RIP my friend.

  • great musici and musician. Old soul here.

  • lagrimas

  • go michael...make me cry!

  • una de las mejores canciones. debe estar cantando en el cielo. mucha sensibilidad.

    cette chanson est trop belle

  • I beg to differ. In my mind, he is describing THE woman of the world: Mother Nature. Changing colors, changing seasons. Secret seeds planted in his heart? Listen to the words.

But, we all speculate. Beautiful nevertheless.

  • Thanks for sending me the link <3 Such beauty. Yes, I know - I missed the Hedges concert with you, but his music lives on. It's in our hearts.

  • The statue of liberty isnt on a beach though.....

  • Just as bit of Trivia information ..This song was written by Hedges to The Statue of Liberty How do I know? Out of his mouth at a concert... Listen to the words..."shes waiting on the beach" Total Patriotism....

  • Man... tough to play well... I love this song, want it 2 b part of my set, opening...

  • I will never tire of this. Absolute pure love. The world would be right if this were the voice we spoke with. We miss you so much it hurts.

    p

  • This song I believe is for all Mothers, Wives, and Daughters everywhere.. Honey-sweet star-song for the female masses. Well done, Mr. Hedges.

  • Statue of Liberty actually....

  • What a talent 25 years listening to you machael never gets boring

  • Fantastic!

  • Its pretty sad he died from his car getting burryed in a mud slide they didnt find his car till 5 days after... he is amazing

    R.I.P.

  • ok i have tabs for this song but im afraid my hgh e strin will break when i tune to a

    somone help

  • hey man ! i found it on a web page that shows the high e string is tuned to A , the A's pitch is below the B-string. that means you can use double B-string and tune the e-string-placed B down to A. but i just got the tuning, i ain't got the tabs. i love this song crazy ! could you share the tabs with me?

  • all tabs can be found at rootwitch

  • beautiful.

  • Most definitely.

  • Nukebass thank you so much for uploading this wonderful video, so all of Michael's fans can continue to enjoy his incredibly creative musical experiences.

  • I love this song. The sound and the poetry are surreal...

  • Thank GOD for for CD's and the internet so we can still enjoy the music of this great musician and talent. Though he is gone, he still amazes and inspires. R.I.P. Micheal.

  • Not sure god had much to do with the development of CDs and the internet (or that mudslide that killed him), but I agree to your statement - what a pity..

  • I miss Michael Hedges so much.

  • He was a true virtuoso. This song is hard as hell to play, and this dense style of guitar is where he feels at home... born to be a legend :)

  • Beautiful song. -Derek

  • very haunting... always put efforts not to cry with this song. Touching my soul effortly

  • Im a new fan of MH, my buddy turned me on to him a couple of weeks ago. This song haunts me, I cant get it out of my head. What artist. Time was unfair to him.

  • thanks michael i needed that.

  • oh my god........I just realized he died only 13 days before my dad did that same year...........why did two great people have to leave so soon

  • He looks like he is having so much fun. And the song is just so beautiful and amazing. Its a shame that the good die young.....

  • I absolutely love this song. It grabs your heart and shows you that love cannot be denied. It awaits us to accept it "without reason"

  • some of the nicest interplay between the vocal line and the guitar line, ever... really wonderful song, and i always love this performance

  • his music changed my life as well.... it still gives me chills how amazing it is...... listen without reason..... I like the comment about the Statue of liberty, BUT the " woman of the world " I thought was sweet, sweet mother EARTH. thank you, Michael. You will live forever in our hearts.

  • I've always loved this piece. It just....works.

  • Always hurt me his voice..

Of course I like his play & music but his song...is so nature, beautiful, and awakes me missing feeling .

    Memories of 20 years.

  • I really love the flutes in this. He really enjoyed putting that texture into his music and making it work. Incredible fore-listening ability. LOL!!! I think its a great injustice to the life of someone to think of them as dead when theyre really not. Especially Michael. His soul... anyway.

  • Michael changed my life and my guitar style forever and for those of you who don't know this little fact--this song he wrote here is about the Statue of Liberty.(listen to the words) I mourned his death like a family member and will always be inspired by him as many others are---

  • We're only allowed these angels for a short time, those looking will see, the aware, encouraged

  • what a tragic loss to great music, you will always be with us in our hearts and souls

  • Oh shit! I didn't know that! Oh my God!

  • I heard this song (1987) a year or so before my lovely Wife Teresa and I were married. When we were together I would think of this quite often. It moved me deeply then and it still moves me today. Michael was and is still very original, he will always be missed by guitarists throughout the world over. ~~~~~~~~M~~~~~~~~

  • always be missed (....) why?

  • quesapa, Michael died in 1997 in a car crash..

He changed my life with its music. I've never listened to anyone, after him, able to touch my heart so deeply. I can't but withold tears when I hear this song...

  • That's no more than good feelings my friend! I just knew a day before yesterday.Tragic. But he is missed by all of us and i'm sure that a pure musician like him,is around in every single soul here on earth who's thinking of him. When Zawinul died,i heard his music more than three months every days,so i understand your feelings.Tears is the best way of comunication with the missing on earth.

  • i ment the missing ones*

  • Love the song.Great guitar, great melody.Could someone interpret the depth of it's meaning?

  • One of the singular attributes of Michael Hedges as an distinctive American artist was his stage presence.

What an audience would see would be Michael with his acoustic guitar; and next to him, his open guitar case. He did not leave his guitar case back-stage as every other performer did. Nor do performers today take their cases with them on stage. He was the ultimate street performer, playing next to his open guitar case. There for one reason, to express himself to anyone who came by.

  • When a man falls in love with a woman, that gal constitutes his whole world. Michael's song, "Woman of the World" is one of the most intoxicating songs ever performed, and it accurately reflects how a boy is intoxicated with a girl when he is in love. Women may not understand this, but men do.

That's why the song is so popular.

  • really great vid. but it's out of sync.

  • Yeah, I had problems encoding it :-/

  • @jorihaar well it's in sync now!

  • Please do me a favor and never pull this vid. You are appreciated

  • Thankfully we live in a country where individuals like Michael can bloom in freedom. He will influence many great guitarists to come that will enrigh our lives even more. This video of Michael on Youtube is one of the favorites of servicemen now in Iraq. Any country that can produce artists like Michael is worth defending against religious, nazi-brained outlaws who kill for a ticket to heaven.

  • AMEN BROTHER!

  • Thanks for the live version. This is my signature song. Only from Michael.

  • I was afraid of that... I entered the lyrics in the wrong sequence. Perhaps if you stand on your head they'll be right. Enjoy.

And thanks GoldMine for the turn on. On International Woman's Day (March 8), you'll have helped make my wife very happy.

    I appreciate you.

  • The woman of the world turns slowly Days are drawn—seasons start to change She finds that natural boundary Her eyes change color—sounds begin to fade I slowly turn away... from the woman of the world The woman of the world holds me to colder courses farther out to sea where no one really knows me and if the anchor's out boarders love and leave She's waiting on the beach... my woman of the world (continued)
  • No one hears the way she whispers every changing season

Through every falling rain I listen without reason...

    without reason...

'till the woman of the world shows me

the secret seed she planted in my heart

Her breath is cool to sway me

    Roots shoot down

    Her eyes begin to shine

My love runs leaf and vine

through the woman of the world...

  • That last part is what nearly made me cry, "till the woman of the world shows me

the secret seed she planted in my heart"...

  • such a gorgeous song with a great story.

    The Story Lady

  • divine female song

  • Not female....mother earth

  • michel was a lossing not only for the music but also a fine senciblfor all the guitar player, who is the one that shall play a such noble man.

  • hahahah, what? I dig your spirit though bro, Hedges was amazing

  • Why is this the studio version? Was the sound quality of the video bad or something?...

  • This is NOT the studio version... it's a bit out of sync due to problems encoding this video ;-)

  • I realized that when I heard the audience but still the quality is brilliant, that, & or Michael Hedges is just something else...

  • Truly amazing. Michael Hedges is one of my favourite Windham Will heads, next to Will Ackerman. His guitar playing is so dynamic & wonderful, lights me up every time, & sends shivers down my spine listening to him, thanks for uploading, great to see videos of him...

  • Simply amazing...

  • His wedding song... :)

  • Really? I didn't know that! :-O She must be a lovely woman to deserve such an amazing song :-)

  • I had the true pleasure of seeing him perform 3 times b/4 his untimely passing. he was the most amazing & gifted artist ever before my eyes. I miss him still. And watching this clip made me cry. He truly was an angel who touched many a hearts, including mine.

  • Wow! 3 times! You're really lucky! Well, this song made me cry on the first time I listened to it too :-)

  • Hedges is a great writer, musician and performer.

  • I worked for a guy who is from SF California and his mom rented to Michael. Michael would ask Rick for his opinion on new tunes he would write from time to time. What could Rick say? It was so awesome to hear play. I saw his only once and I was amazed! One of the best solo performers I have ever seen. Phil Keaggy was another...

  • Anyone happen to know the tuning he's using on this?

  • D-A-D-E-B-A ;-)

You can find a big list of MH alternate tunings here:

    l i x . i n / 4 9 f 6 b 2

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever. I remember when my friend called to tell me that he had passed. What a loss for the world. I hope his family is well. Years later I felt the same when Shawl Lane left us.

  • Where do you get Manring in this performance?

  • eMule

  • I had the pleasure of seeing Michael in Boulder,CO at the Boulder Theatre in a show where he shared the bill, and the stage with an equally amazing talent (on bass) Michael Manring. What a memorable evening - a friend bought my ticket, and said I would never forget what I was about to experience, he was right - thanks Sam.

  • MH + MM = Indescribable Experience!

As a Bass player, I can say that Manring is one of my main influences ;-)

  • was that in 96....I too saw them in Jackson,MS

  • A treasure of a guitar player and an engaging man. What a great sense of humor he had. If you didn't have the pleasure of actually seeing him live, you really missed out on someone and something special...

  • I miss Michael and his musical gifts and contributions to guitar craft as well as his sparkling personality so much. I had the pleasure of seeing Michael 4 times when he'd come through Minneapolis. The Roy Wilkins and Guthrie Theater shows were just so much fun. Michael had a way of making the audience feel that we were all just sitting in his living room.

  • What beautiful song! - Joni's influence is very strong. Michael's music goes beyond music.

  • i was about 7 or 8 years old when he died

watch one of my videos to see how much he has influenced my playing

talk to me to see how much he has influenced who i am

    i miss him...

  • One of the best acoustic guitar songs ever, thank you for adding this video. I have only recently discovered Hedges and now I cant get enough of him, he is mind blowingly good!!!!

  • ok, i misunderstood you, sorry! Its because of all the people making fun of Windham Hill...

  • And a damned good guitar player at that...remember that.

  • Just fucking wonderful!!

  • banana of the world at 3:55 :)

he was the greatest guitarist i've ever heard!

  • Your sarcasm noted... i always thought he didn't quite belong with the New Age Windham Hill stuff anyway... who cares who he's affiliated with...

  • Actually some of that album was in the studio so this might be the real performance. Every time I try to play this song in the same tuning I cannot pull off those slap harmonics.

  • Not sure if this will help but I was able to hit the note by pressing/hitting hard with my index finger on the E string down the neck after the slap. If you watch his index finger I think that is what he does. Hope that helps :) It does take a lot of practice. If you miss even a little bit it doesn't work.

  • This is either a video sync job or the exact performance from Live on the Double Planet. If the latter, that's cool.

  • Not a sync job, this is really his live performance on Double Planet. The video is a bit out of sync because I had some problems encoding it :-)

  • That's great! I truly miss Mr. Hedges. Thanks much for sharing.

  • I miss you

  • Michael owned the acoustic guitar. There will never be a genius of this magnitude agin. R.I.P. 9 years has been so silent without you.

  • right on Michael
