Keith Moon was a brilliant drummer. Moon was still alive when this song was recorded. This is just a rehearsal because Kenny Jones is on drums. Kenny couldn't hold a candle to Keith
Moon could not be replaced...Jones knew this. He thought of himself as a member of the band, not just a fill in clone, and so put his own spin on many of the songs.
1) This isn't a recording session. This was recorded for Who Are You which was released in 1978. If anything, this is nothing more than a run through with Kenny Jones as their drummer or them preparing for a gig.
2) Kenny might be a good drummer on his own, but he sucks with The Who. He's not playing this even remotely close to how it was on the record. It's almost as if he has no regard for who he's replacing. I can see why Roger had a "him-or-me" mentality during Kenny's tenure with the band.
Many fans seem to be down on him, but Kenney Jones kicks butt in this performance. I've never heard Moon play any better than what Jones lays down here. Even during a rehearsal like this, The Who still sound dynamic and powerful. This is great footage.
At 1:00 Pete laughs, thinking to himself, "This sounds pretty good! I guess the Who isn't TOTALLY dead. I myself would prefer Kenny Jones over a drunk Keith any day! When Keith was ON he was amazing, but later on, he became a bad joke. At least with Kenny you knew he was gonna show up, and play a tight beat, which is 99.99% of the deal.
many thanks. this is music

I think Kenny got a raw deal. It's impossible to replace Keith. I think he did his job very well given the cirsumstances that he accepted.

Kenny Jones' expression when he whacks that crash cymbal at 2:38 is the best.
