I took a while to warm to Jose's voice because of the break when he moves through the passagio. But his warmth, musicianship and other qualities won me over. Now I listen to him more than perhaps any other tenor and I am a Bjoerling lover so that is saying something. Probably better sound with more modern recordings is a factor.
I agree, he does this much better than anyone else. I'm attempting this in about 2 weeks in front of our boarding school during chapel. I hope I show it some justice.
Besides the beauty of Carreras's voice, he has the unique ability to technically deliver this aria as it is intended to be delivered. The music itself and the aria is meant to be sung, overwrought with sentimentality. I have always found his interpretations of the original composers' works are done with exceptional sensitivity.
Pavarotti me semble beaucoup plus détaché.
i love this BUT to me it sounds like there's two seperate lines here, the music and the voice... but where do they meet? They should touch and bond.. that's why I prefer Luciano! but this is still really great..
Only Begniamino Gigli and Mario Lanza can compare with him in this aria, but they did not sing it in correctn key last high note must be A and they were taking H. Del Monaco was singing it in correct key.
As regards to Pavarotti, he never had such a fire as Carreras owns. Besides Carreras has stronger voice than Pavarotti He was siging allways higher and we thought, that he had stronger voice.
You can sense that he sings with feeling and purpose. Pavarotti has a trumpet-like voice that can hit the high notes but often he does sing like he`s trying to get through the aria quicktime. Of course, Pavarotti`s studio album stuff is good and some songs have feeling but his live singing is a bit too quick for me.
Responder a este video... i just can not believe those 4 deaf bastards who cliked not like this area, there´s something wrong with them, i mean there´s got to be....
Even after 2000 his voice didn't loose its power and expression. I watched his concert "Around the world"(2002) on TV last year. It was just live acoustics of concert hall there, he sung without any microphone and the sound was much better than in this famous concert of Three Tenors.
So I think his voice is still with him in all of its richness, beauty and strength.
i know that most of you dont prefer carreras over nobody else but i am sure you know the story of his cancer so the therapy destroyed his voice completly so why dont you watch his videos from the 80s and before they are great
Carreras loves to live dangerously.... he seems to favour little known or very obscure operatic pieces, he is a very major, unique talent, long may he live, and even moreso now the big fella's gone. sempre mi amore (i think!), Jose.
This is one of the best renditions of one of the top songs. It's a shame Carreras got caught up in the "power competitions" of the 3 tenors. Carreras never lacked power, and here he is back to his pre-illness best, with a song that needs expression before power. Pavarotti's version is too powerful, he loses the emotions.
rubbish... this man had one of the greatest tenor voices ever recorded... one must remember that his voice has diminished here. the man had a 1 in 10 chance of survival due to a relentless form of leukemia. he fought and won, he survived and still had a voice like this. you know nothing of music.
I completely agree with you! Carreras truly had one of the most beautiful tenor voices of the 20th century. It is only sad that he didn't sound like he did particularly in the mid 1970's when he sang Rodolfo( La Boheme), the lighter Verdi operas and of course his Donizetti peformances (Edgardo-Lucia di Lamermoor)...fantastic performances!
It is almost like this aria was written for him personally. I don't see anyone performing this better!

This is painful to listen to, Carreras finishes very badly and the start is also very strained.
I have no doubt Carreras was very good in the past. But try to listen to Nicolai Gedda in this particular aria ("Lamento di Federico").
There is singing - and there is singing, if you know what I mean ;-)
