Spying and allegations thereof, however, fall under the jurisdiction of law and not of obfuscating military jargon. It would be useful for you to go through the FCO findings. Sufficient to say, this video was withheld until the sailors were released because it would have been incriminating at the time.

Instead of escorting violators from waters or airspace, Iran arrested, then paraded UK sailors and marines on television, bullying them into reading political statements which I'm pretty sure is contrary to Geneva convention. If thats not a media offensive, I don't know what is.

@petercool2 My repeated suggestion to go through the FCO report was not by way of scoring cheap points. In the report on pg. 23, for instance, the report states the Foreign Office embarked on a "world-wide diplomatic lobbying campaign" to build the case against Iran.
The FCO attempts to justify this by implying that Iran was first to go public on the issue, yet many would disagree. In any case, on the media, as you will know global diplomacy minus the media doesn't quite work in our age.

I'd agree the video title has somewhat of a sensationalist tinge to it. Nevertheless, I would disagree with the general way in which the UK was widely depicted as "victim" during the crisis, and Iran as antagonist. It's a view that I simply don't buy.

Any intervention (be it spying or intelligence gathering) vis-a-vis Iran, in the ostensible garb of Iraq's liberators, was expressly against the whole 'freedom for Iraq' myth of an operation.

@fmoa sorry pal, but Helmand was not our area to maintain - it was "cleared" of enemy activity by the US forces. Our mission there was to train the Afghan National Army - which is why we sent just 7000 troops.
What happened was the Taliban concentrated their efforts into the region - what has happened is the small number of British troops have defeated them in certain areas only to lack the man power to hold the ground they have cleared. So the next day they had to clear the area again.
@fmoa US high command asked for more British troops. Our spineless government wouldn't send any despite the British Army agreeing. And so the USMC were sent - however, make no mistake about it their will be huge US casualties in Helmand (and probably more fucking depressing Vietnam type movies).
All been said, you cannot deny that such a small number of thinly spread British troops killing hundreds of thousends of Taliban is not impressive.

I agree with you on separating the administration from the soldiers who are willing to put their lives on the line. This in my view generally applies to all armies. If you remember, at the declaration of the WWI ceasefire, the two sides came together and shared food and tokens etc. Just minutes before they were firing at each other.
Incidents like Abu Ghraib indicate more systematic violations of rights that go beyond soldiers to much higher positions in my view.
At the same time, the right of resistance to the presence of foreign armies in one's country, or the right of defence, is not tied with whether the actual individuals who constitute the army are good are bad.
If Mexico for example were to invade Texas, one would naturally find it ridiculous to accept the argument to accept the status quo; or to act with kindness toward the Mexican army if they have been ordered to invade and occupy Texas.
And to end there's the somewhat touchy 'bag of worms' when it comes to soldiers refusing to serve or going AWOL on moral grounds.
This has happened with quite a considerable number of soldiers, sadly the top generals have not taken a more assertive role, if anything they've done the opposite. Some have quit over lack of care for the soldiers e.g. Kiley.

The Marines were not "showing up" with warships. If they wanted the destroyer to move away, they should have confornted them through official channels. Abducting soldiers who are boarding vessels suspected of smuggling, then not releasing them for so very long, is clearly different.

Spying and allegations thereof, however, fall under the jurisdiction of law and not of obfuscating military jargon. It would be useful for you to go through the FCO findings. Sufficient to say, this video was withheld until the sailors were released because it would have been incriminating at the time.

Instead of escorting violators from waters or airspace, Iran arrested, then paraded UK sailors and marines on television, bullying them into reading political statements which I'm pretty sure is contrary to Geneva convention. @petercool2 My repeated suggestion to go through the FCO report was not by way of scoring cheap points. In the report on pg. 23, for instance, the report states the Foreign Office embarked on a "world-wide diplomatic lobbying campaign" to build the case against Iran.
The FCO attempts to justify this by implying that Iran was first to go public on the issue, yet many would disagree. In any case, on the media, as you will know global diplomacy minus the media doesn't quite work in our age.

Any intervention (be it spying or intelligence gathering) vis-a-vis Iran, in the ostensible garb of Iraq's liberators, was expressly against the whole 'freedom for Iraq' myth of an operation.
Assume, if you may, that similar activity was taking place near the UK in the Atlantic from the Chinese. What would you say then?

@fmoa sorry pal, but Helmand was not our area to maintain - it was "cleared" of enemy activity by the US forces. Our mission there was to train the Afghan National Army - which is why we sent just 7000 troops.
What happened was the Taliban concentrated their efforts into the region - what has happened is the small number of British troops have defeated them in certain areas only to lack the man power to hold the ground they have cleared. So the next day they had to clear the area again.

I agree with you on separating the administration from the soldiers who are willing to put their lives on the line. This in my view generally applies to all armies. If you remember, at the declaration of the WWI ceasefire, the two sides came together and shared food and tokens etc. Just minutes before they were firing at each other.
Incidents like Abu Ghraib indicate more systematic violations of rights that go beyond soldiers to much higher positions in my view.

This has happened with quite a considerable number of soldiers, sadly the top generals have not taken a more assertive role, if anything they've done the opposite. Some have quit over lack of care for the soldiers e.g. Kiley.
You'll note that quite a few generals decided to block any talk of attacking Iran & called their decision one of "conscience". What abt Iraq?!

Except that they did revise them. It wasn't just one time, but multiple times. The first time they gave the Marines' positions, it placed them in international waters. Beckett pointed that out to them and they basically went, "Oops, let me get back to you on that," then came up with a completely different map.
Feel free to believe idiotic teenagers, are sent out on espionage missions, hundreds of thousands of miles away from even the most vaguely interesting target. :)

We'll have to agree to disagree. The matter of the Iranians almost constantly revising the territorial water limits, was well-publicised in at least the Western media. Not sure what outlets you were relying on. Because you were not aware of even this detail, I can see how you might have concluded things in the way you have done.

I never said the UK government sets the borders. I said that they pointed out the internationally-recognised ones, during the negotiations.
The Marines were not "showing up" with warships. If they wanted the destroyer to move away, they should have confornted them through official channels. Abducting soldiers who are boarding vessels suspected of smuggling, then not releasing them for so very long, is clearly different.

Even if they had been, they could have made millions more for revealing such a thing to the media, in turn. Unlike Iran, the UK media is not only free ot criticise the govnemrent, but regularly indulges in doing so.

The negotiations had them revise the border each time. You might have forgotten this, but I haven't. Becket had to keep reminding them and the Iranian diplomat kept going back to his employers and coming back with new revisions. This was shown in television coverage, at the time.

The destroyer was a very short distance away, so your logic fails. The tiny little boat they were was merely to get them over to the ship they had boarded, as part of their remit.

There is absolutely nothing in the interview equating to an 'admission' of espionage, whatsoever. He says it himself; it's just checking with whoever they encounter, about what's generally going on in the area. Show me a military patrol, whether on land or sea, which doesn't do that.
If you seriously think actual espionage could be done by a few guys in an inflatable dingy, hundreds of thousands of miles away from any target even remotely valuable, you need to revise your opinions.
