@larousse2002 Because that is the best thing you could do. You can get scared and panic but that isn't going to help neither the plane, crew or pilots and losing cabin pressure isn't a disaster.
How is everybody staying calm?! They would have to shoot me with tranquilizers or a bottle of Jim Bean before I calmed down. And I'm pretty nervous on flights to begin with. Thanks for sharing! :P
I'll never get on a plane again. I even took medicine, and my anxiety fought threw it. If i can't drive, then no need to travel. Greyhound is filled with criminals, planes are not birds, trains can always go off the track, and boats sink. I rather take my chances with a car.
@ColoradoKing26 did you really mean what you whote in your comment? If so, I'm sorry to tell you but you might have some sort of personality disorder.... just MIGHT>
Haha I was onboard one of the two southwest flights where a hole popped open on the roof and when the masks dropped down the kids thought they were hats XD
@FlyDeltaAirlines1001 Not really sure since they didn't give us an explanation. Most likely it was due to a faulty air conditioner. We were delayed about an hour while we waited for the air conditioner to be repaired. Also, we were not able to fly above 25,000 feet because of the problem. Either that or there was a hole in the fuselage.
@Rhizopus81 Your not allowed to fly over 10,000ft because over that is really thin air that cannot be breathed in. If the ED was at a high altitude, pilots do whats called an emergency decent for instances such as Explosive Decompression, engine failure, etc. If there was a hole in the fuselage, I don't think the plane would have been repaired in an hour. Probably grounded for a while.
@AirCanada04, the faa says 14,000 ft is as hight as you can safley fly without oxygen but only for 1/2 hour or less. once youv been at 14,000ft for 1/2 hour you need to decend to 12,500 before going back to 14,000ft. I fly a DA-20 at 14,000 ft to clear mountian peaks all the time and feel just fine, but i do live at 4,500 ft too.
@Rhizopus81 im thinking yall lost a pac.. I know if you only have one pac most aircraft have limits on what they can do..and the MD88 leak sooooo much air of them i bet just running one would have a hard time keeping the plane pressurized.. just a thought tho
@FlyDeltaAirlines1001 It happens when theres a hole somewhere on the aircraft causing the aircraft to lose oxygen and pressure. Or when the pilot switch the cabin pressurization swtich from auto to manual. The manual option means the engine will not produce oxygen therefore theres no oxygen.
A Boeing 737-300 crashed in Athens due to lack of oxygen
@josh198869: here in Europe, we beg to see some more MD80s. The airports here are spoiled with just 737s and A320s. Lately attended with ERJ190s. Boring........
@FlyDeltaAirlines1001 A decompression is when there is a hole on the jet, a pilot error (setting pressurization mode to manual) or other hundreds of ways :)
@FlyDeltaAirlines1001 Planes can lose pressure for a number of different reasons. Sometimes a door doesn't seal correctly or comes open during flight. Another reason has to do with the packs and bleed air, which is a complex system that pressurizes the cabin and provides air-conditioning.
loss of cabin pressure is nothin to be worried about. The oxygen supply in ur mask lasts about 35-40 mins but you would have made an emergency landing by then and if you dont you are given another mask thats filled with oxygen.
@cool2040coasters lol why would u freak out? loss of cobin pressure doesn't equal death, this shit happens all the time. this woman is probably a frequent flyer
@cool2040coasters Because nothing really happened...what are you supposed to do, panic? It's not a big deal...the plane still flies like a normal plane and it'll land like a normal plane so you should act like a normal passenger.
@TheStereoman2 , with all due respect to your comment, The MD80 is avery reliable airplane, I work as a mechanic on these planes and the durability of these aircraft is astonishing. Very robust and reliable. There has not been any MD80 involve in a crash related with structure problems. decompressions happens now and then in any aircraft, even newer ones like the 777 and airbus. reason for decompression range from a simple Air conditioning system problem to fuselage ruptures,
O2 mask is necessry in rapid decompression because if its happen on the hight of 40000ft then after 10 sec you will get hypoxia which is lak of oxygen and you will not able to control your movement and gradually you will incapacitate and die and in rapid decent you badly need oxygen this is ur only hope at that time
you know some thing if rapid decompression happen at the hight of 36000ft u only have 10 sec to get hypoxia and after hypoxia u ll not able to control ur movment so how cum u ll be able to takel 400 peoples if u got hypoxia and specially for poilet landing is depand upon them
You realize how heavy that the plane would be, right? It would be unable to fly, and the engines required to actually lift the plane off of the ground would be so enormous that it'd be too expensive and uneconomical.
@YoMomSaddam: I agree. One thing I would like to add is that each airplane has its maximum landing weight. If the airplane is heavier than that, fuel has to be dumped first before an airplane can land. Otherwise, an airplane can disintegrate upon landing and may result in severe injuries or even death on anyone onboard.
i think dumping of fuel is not necessry bcoz weight calculation of the air plane is predefine as per all the circumtenses usually in this casses captain suddenly maintain a save level which is 10000 ft and after that they can glide and lend any where on airport they have to do the rapid decent in this situation and they only have 12 min which is the duration of oxygen mask for pessengers and if weight metter then they coulnd stop air plane to fall down and crash bcoz its faster then landing
@kamrankhurshid I think you are right on that. Loss of cabin pressure does not always mean it requires dumping of fuels. The plane can fly and burn fuel before it lands as long as it maintains 10000ft or below. There must have been some other issues that led the captain to dump fuel and land the plane sooner.
This was actually probably one of American's newest MD-80's. You can tell by the interior that this bird once belonged to TWA. In that case, the plane could be as young as 1999/2000.
COOL. wanna experience that on my next flight. lol. thats what u get if u fly American Airlines! Nah Jk jk jk, but srsly American Airlines is not a good airline.
Emphasis on the word "almost". The only retarded one here is the one who thinks that the flight crew should be soothing scared passengers crying for their mommy's instead of bringing everyone home safely.
This is clearly not an explosive decompression, it's probably not even due to failure of the aircraft fuselage. My guess is the pressurization system malfunctioned causing the drop in cabin pressure. And yes the flight deck crew is dealing with three things; get on O2, work with ATC to drop below 10K, and contact the cabin crew. Unfortunately talking to scared passengers is not on their to do list, that's the responsibility of the flight attendants. We're not just there to serve you a coke! =)
The anouncement was already made as soon as the masks drop. Also the captain is very busy flying the plane to their unscheduled emerg landing. You won't hear a lot of talking from the flight deck.
Maybe the pilots were busy flying the airplane and saving the lives of everyone on board. Aviate, Navigate, Communicate. In that order. Some things are more important that PA's.

Yea uh the captain and co captian are probably busy trying to coordinate an emergency landing with the ATC. I doubt he had much time to say anything to you guys. Be glad you're alive.
@Rhizopus81 I think the pilots didn't say anything because they have to wear the oxygen masks too if the cabin decompresses, plus, they were probably very busy on the radio declaring an emergency and such.
@Rhizopus81 I am a flight attendant, and last week performed a diversion and emergency landing following a medical emergency. My Captain never made an announcement to the passengers because, honestly, they were much too busy arranging a landing and coordinating medical and maintenance assistance (for a post-overweight-landing check). Flying the plane comes first. Everything else comes later.
@deovalente Thanks for your comment and I completely agree with you. Having never experienced something like this I didn't know what to expect. Truth be told, I think the airline handled this situation as well as they could have. Even though it was late, they were able to quickly produce an aircraft to continue us to Chicago from Nebraska. The cabin crew also did a good job of managing the situation. Thanks again deovalente and cheers to you for the work you do.
@Rhizopus81 I'm glad American handled the situation well.
