In one interview Royce Gracie said he fought the early UFC's in a gi in large part because it subconsciously encouraged strikers to grab it and grapple with him, rather than strike at him (and once it turned into a grappling match he felt it could beat anyone).
@nosoxfan you can effectively cheat while wearing a gi, by using the sleeves to choke on the ground. of course, it makes you easier to grab, judo-style, so it's a tradeoff
